College Football Power Rankings 2026: Every Power 4 Team Tiered

We ranked all 72 teams that matter right now, from the unbeaten Hurricanes down to the programs still trying to find their footing. This isn't a preseason guess, it's where things stand in real time: records, AP rankings, conference races, and who's actually playing like a contender versus who's just getting by.

Miami's the clear top dog, Ohio State's cratered, and a pile of surprise teams (hello, New Mexico and Wake Forest) are elbowing their way into the conversation. Disagree with where we've got your team? That's half the fun. Argue it out below.

Virginia Cavaliers

3-1, No. 25 on the votes list, and 1-0 in the ACC after a 42-3 rout of Delaware. Virginia has quietly built one of the better rosters in the conference, and an ACC title game appearance isn't out of the question.

About Virginia Cavaliers

The Virginia Cavaliers represent the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The program has historically trailed in-state rival Virginia Tech but has invested in modernizing its roster in recent years.

UTSA Roadrunners

UTSA Roadrunners

UTSA keeps churning out solid rosters under a program that knows exactly what it is. Not flashy enough for the top half, but a tough out for anyone who overlooks them. A middle-of-the-pack Group of Five mainstay now settling into Power 4 life.

About UTSA Roadrunners

The UTSA Roadrunners are the football program representing the University of Texas at San Antonio, competing in the American Athletic Conference. The program is one of the newer FBS teams, having launched in 2011, but quickly built a reputation for strong attendance and competitive play in the Group of Five ranks. Entering the 2026 season, UTSA looks to reestablish itself as a contender in the American after a run of conference titles earlier in the decade.

Arizona State Sun Devils

2-1 and 1-0 in the Big 12, positioned as a dark horse in a wide-open conference race. Arizona State's ceiling is a surprise run at the Big 12 title if the early conference form holds.

About Arizona State Sun Devils

How we ranked them

We leaned on current AP Top 25 rankings, actual records, conference standings and results through week 10, then layered in the stuff that doesn't show up in a box score: quality of losses, strength of conference, trajectory, and whether a team's record matches how they're actually playing. Where fans and analysts disagree (looking at you, Ohio State and LSU), we picked a side and said so.

FAQ

Who is the best college football team right now in 2026?

Miami, hands down. The Hurricanes are 8-0, sit at No. 1 in the AP Poll, and have a legit Heisman-caliber playmaker in Trinidad Chambliss running the offense.

Why did Ohio State fall so far in the rankings?

The Buckeyes came in as preseason No. 1 but have dropped to two losses, including a 30-18 defeat to USC, and now sit at No. 11. Injuries and inconsistency get most of the blame.

Can Indiana repeat as national champion?

It's possible but no longer a given. The Hoosiers are 8-1 and still ranked in the top 10, but they've needed close wins (like a 23-16 escape against Minnesota) to stay there.

Which surprise teams are overperforming in 2026?

New Mexico (7-1, ranked 22nd), Wake Forest (7-1, ranked 14th) and Boise State (7-1) have all outplayed their preseason expectations by a wide margin.

Which Power Four teams are struggling the most?

Florida State, North Carolina under Bill Belichick, Rutgers, and Baylor have all had rough stretches, with multiple coaches already fired at programs like Maryland and NC State.
