NFL Running Backs 2026 Tier List: Every Starter Ranked

We ranked 30 of the NFL's most relevant running backs, from bell-cow workhorses to timeshare guys still fighting for touches. This is based on what the backs actually do on the field right now: explosiveness, volume, pass-catching chops, and whether their offense actually trusts them with the ball on third down.

Fans argue about this stuff constantly, and we didn't dodge the split opinions. Where the room is divided (looking at you, running back committees), we picked a side and told you why. Disagree? That's the fun part. Rank it yourself and see where you land.

How we ranked them

We weighed current production and role over name recognition: touches, yards per carry, receiving work, red zone usage, and how much an offense leans on the player. Injury history and age curve factored in too, since running backs decline fast. Where public opinion is split between "proven veteran" and "explosive youngster," we leaned toward who's winning fantasy leagues and games right now, while noting the disagreement.

FAQ

Who is the best running back in the NFL right now?

By consensus, Bijan Robinson, Jahmyr Gibbs, Christian McCaffrey and Saquon Barkley sit at the top, with Robinson and Gibbs often cited as the most complete all-around backs in the league.

Is Christian McCaffrey still elite?

When healthy, yes. Injury history is the only thing keeping some fans from ranking him as the clear number one back in football.

Why is Alvin Kamara ranked so low?

Kamara's still a useful receiver, but his explosiveness as a runner has declined significantly compared to his peak years in New Orleans.

How did rookies like Ashton Jeanty and Omarion Hampton rank so high?

Both arrived with heavy college workloads and immediate opportunity in their new offenses, which pushed them above several established veterans still stuck in timeshares.

What separates the A tier from the S tier here?

The S tier backs have essentially no holes in their game: they run, catch, and handle volume. The A tier backs are excellent but usually have one limiting factor, whether that's receiving work, injury risk, or a shared backfield.
