NBA Teams 2026-27 Ranked Best to Worst
The season's barely a few weeks old and already the league looks upside down. The Lakers look like a different animal with Luka running the show. Giannis is gone from Milwaukee. So yeah, now's as good a time as any to sort out who's actually good.
We ranked all 25... well, all the teams worth arguing about, from true title threats down to the teams already playing for next year's lottery balls (even if the new system says tanking doesn't pay like it used to). This leans on what analysts and fans are saying across the early-season noise, plus our own read where the debates get loud. Disagree? That's the whole point. Argue it out.

SS Tier: The real contenders

Oklahoma City Thunder
Defending champs and still the team everyone else is chasing. The defense is suffocating and the depth, even after losing pieces like Isaiah Joe, Aaron Wiggins and Lu Dort, is still deeper than most contenders' best eight. The only real question is whether anyone in the West can actually push them.
About Oklahoma City Thunder
The Oklahoma City Thunder are an NBA team based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, playing in the Western Conference. Their jerseys primarily use a palette of blue, orange, yellow, and navy, reflecting the state's sunset and thunderstorm imagery.

San Antonio Spurs
Victor Wembanyama has turned this from a rebuild into a legitimate number-one-seed conversation. Some experts now have the Spurs finishing with the best record in the West, which would've sounded absurd two years ago. This is the most fun team to watch develop in real time.

NBA franchise based in San Antonio, Texas, known for a sustained run of success and a low-key brand identity.

Houston Rockets
Kevin Durant slots into a young, defense first roster that already won 52 games, giving Houston a legit two way threat alongside Alperen Sengun and Jalen Green. The depth, size, and coaching under Ime Udoka make this team a true contender in the West, just a notch below the top tier of OKC and San Antonio. Health is the only real question mark here.

AA Tier: Built to make noise

Denver Nuggets
Nikola Jokic remains, by plenty of accounts, the best player on the planet, and that alone keeps Denver dangerous no matter what the supporting cast looks like. Roster questions linger, but with Jokic this good, the Nuggets are never out of a series.

NBA franchise based in Denver, Colorado, known for reviving its colorful 1980s throwback uniform as a fan favorite.

Detroit Pistons
The debate now is whether that pace holds up without a major roster swing. We think the defensive foundation is real enough to keep them in the top tier.

Cleveland Cavaliers
Donovan Mitchell and James Harden have the Cavs ranked in the 5-7 range by most measures, but there's a running skepticism here: great record, disappointing playoffs. This might finally be the year that changes, or the narrative just repeats itself again.

BB Tier: Playoff hopefuls with questions

Minnesota Timberwolves
Ranked anywhere from 5th to 10th depending who you ask, which tells you how unsettled this roster feels post-trade. One bold prediction has them owning the league's best offense and worst defense since trading for Rudy Gobert. That's a wild range of outcomes for one team.

NBA franchise based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with a wolf-themed identity and northern lights color palette.

Indiana Pacers
Tyrese Haliburton's return from his Finals injury makes this the league's best comeback story to watch. Some have the Pacers as a dark horse to win the East outright; others think last year's struggles linger. An analyst put it well: more likely to win the East than lose 60 games again.

NBA franchise based in Indianapolis, Indiana, with a long history tied to its blue and gold pinstripe look.

Los Angeles Lakers
The Lakers were 3-0, not 3-1 after four games. (Sources show a 3-1 record after four games with the loss to Portland on Oct. 27) It's a small sample, but the early returns suggest this roster has more juice than people expected heading into the year.

Boston Celtics
Still talented enough to matter in the East, even in a season where the conference feels more wide open than usual. Nobody's writing them off, but nobody's calling them the favorite either, and that in-between spot feels right for now.

NBA franchise based in Boston, Massachusetts, historically one of the winningest teams in league history.

Miami Heat
A steady, well-coached team that rarely blows up but also rarely looks like a true top-tier threat. The East's lack of a clear hierarchy this year gives teams like Miami more room to sneak into the conversation.

NBA franchise based in Miami, Florida, known for its distinct culture and alternate jersey lines.

Golden State Warriors
This ranking depends entirely on Jimmy Butler III's recovery timeline. At full strength, some have the Warriors around 12th; without him, that drops into the low 20s. Preseason struggles without Butler fed the decline narrative, but a midseason return could flip the script fast.

Phoenix Suns
The Suns are stuck in no man's land, too old and expensive to tank but not talented enough to contend. Devin Booker still gives them a scoring floor every night, but the roster around him lacks the defense and depth to compete with the West's upper half. Expect another frustrating year of .500 basketball and a first round exit at best.

NBA franchise based in Phoenix, Arizona, known for its sunburst-themed uniforms of the 1990s.

Orlando Magic
Young, long, and genuinely nasty on defense, with Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner forming a real two-way core. The jump hinges on health and whether the shooting ever arrives, but this roster has the talent and size to hang with anyone in the East. A borderline top tier squad if the pieces click at the same time.

NBA franchise based in Orlando, Florida, known in the 90s for a widely liked pinstripe uniform.

CC Tier: Toss-up middle class

Atlanta Hawks
Not a disaster, not a contender, just solidly stuck in the league's crowded middle. The East being more watered down this year gives teams like Atlanta a puncher's chance at the playoffs without needing to be great.

NBA franchise based in Atlanta, Georgia, known for its bold volt green alternate jerseys as well as its classic red and white set.

Utah Jazz
The surprise pick of the season from at least one expert, who thinks Utah could nearly double last year's 22-win total. That's a bold call for a team still viewed as lottery-bound by most, but it's the kind of upside story worth watching.

New Orleans Pelicans
Zion Williamson actually stayed healthy enough to play 62 games last year, and it still wasn't enough. A bottom-10 defense keeps dragging this team down into the 25-26 range year after year.
About New Orleans Pelicans
The New Orleans Pelicans are an NBA team based in New Orleans, Louisiana, playing in the Western Conference. Their jerseys feature a color scheme of navy blue, red, gold, and white, with a pelican and fleur-de-lis imagery tied to the city's culture.

Brooklyn Nets
A rebuild with no real star and a roster full of guys playing for next year's contract. The draft picks are the only reason to tune in, and even those are mostly spoken for elsewhere. Expect a long season of lineup experiments and very few wins.

FF Tier: Full rebuild mode

Los Angeles Clippers
Jimmy Butler III tearing his ACL in January and possibly not returning until midseason turns a bleak outlook into a genuinely rough one. Consistently parked at 26th or 27th overall, and the twist is the Clippers have zero tanking incentive since they owe their first-round pick to Oklahoma City.

Milwaukee Bucks
Trading Giannis Antetokounmpo is the kind of move that resets a franchise overnight. Mikel Brown Jr. was drafted 6th overall by the Brooklyn Nets in the 2026 NBA Draft, not by Milwaukee. pick and the Julius Randle trade framed as building blocks for down the road, not this season.

How we ranked them
We weighted this toward championship contention: roster talent, health, coaching, and how teams project over a full 82 games, not just hot or cold starts. Early-season record mattered less than trajectory and depth. Where experts are split (Minnesota's ceiling, Golden State's Butler timeline, Indiana's bounce-back), we picked a side based on where the weight of opinion and our own judgment landed, and said so.

Rank these yourselfFAQ
Which NBA team is ranked number one for 2026-27?
The Oklahoma City Thunder, the defending champions, are the near-universal pick for the top spot thanks to their elite defense and deep roster.
Can the New York Knicks repeat as champions?
It's the season's biggest debate. The Knicks ended a 53-year title drought, but no team has repeated since the 2018 Warriors, and an 0-3 start hasn't helped the case.
Who is the worst team in the NBA this season?
The Sacramento Kings are the closest thing to a consensus pick for worst team, with one projection having them at 19-63.
How are the Golden State Warriors ranked with Jimmy Butler injured?
It depends who you ask. With Butler healthy, some rank the Warriors around 12th; without him, projections drop them into the low 20s until he returns from his ACL tear.
Why did the Milwaukee Bucks fall so far in the rankings?
Trading Giannis Antetokounmpo triggered a full rebuild. Milwaukee added the number six draft pick, Mikel Brown Jr., and traded for Julius Randle, but this season is about the future, not now.
Are the Indiana Pacers a real playoff threat?
Opinions are split, but Tyrese Haliburton's return from his Finals injury has some analysts calling Indiana more likely to win the East than to repeat last year's struggles.
