NFL Playoff Contenders Tier List: October 2026

Week 6 is in the books and the NFL has finally started sorting itself into real tiers. A few teams look like legit Super Bowl threats, a bunch of teams are stuck in the "prove it" middle, and a couple are already playing for next year's draft slot.

We ranked all 25 teams currently in the playoff conversation (sorry Dolphins and Browns, you didn't make the cut) based on record, point differential swings, and how the actual football has looked. Disagree with where your team landed? That's the fun part. Argue it out below.

SS Tier: Super Bowl or bust

San Francisco 49ers

Undefeated at 5-0 and gaining more title probability than any other team after Week 5. Adding Mike Evans in the offseason looked like a nice move; it looks like a great one now, and George Kittle working his way back from the Achilles tear only adds more firepower.

About San Francisco 49ers

NFL franchise based in Santa Clara, California, representing the San Francisco Bay Area. Associated with the dynasty teams of the 1980s and 90s.

Kansas City Chiefs

4-0 and still the measuring stick nobody wants to admit they're chasing. Every major power ranking has them top two, and nothing about their start suggests that changes soon.

About Kansas City Chiefs

NFL franchise based in Kansas City, Missouri, playing in the AFC West. Known for the arrowhead logo and the loud home crowd at Arrowhead Stadium.

Buffalo Bills

Buffalo Bills

5-0 and rated right alongside the Vikings as one of the two best stories in the AFC. No signature statement win needed yet when the record speaks for itself.

About Buffalo Bills

NFL franchise based in Orchard Park, New York, serving the Buffalo area. Known for a loyal fanbase that tailgates through brutal winters.

Minnesota Vikings

Minnesota Vikings

Also 5-0 and getting talked about as more than a contender now, some outlets have bumped them all the way to legitimate Super Bowl threat after their offense took a real step forward.

About Minnesota Vikings

NFL franchise based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, known for the horned helmet logo and purple color scheme.

AA Tier: One tier below, but close

Detroit Lions

Detroit Lions

Bleacher Report's line on Detroit is that everyone basically knows what they are at this point, a tough, well-coached team. That's a backhanded compliment but it's also why they keep getting mentioned with the contenders.

About Detroit Lions

NFL franchise based in Detroit, Michigan, known for the distinct Honolulu blue color used in its uniforms.

Founded
1930
Colors
Honolulu blue and silver

Green Bay Packers

Green Bay Packers

The volatility here is wild. Playoff odds went from 13.3% after Week 3 to over 35% after Week 6, and the 31-7 beatdown of Chicago is a big reason why. Momentum is real and right now it's pointing up.

About Green Bay Packers

NFL franchise based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the smallest market in the league. Famous for its community ownership structure and classic uniform.

Seattle Seahawks

Seattle Seahawks

Seattle has the firepower and the defense to hang with anyone, but they have not shown the week to week consistency of the true elite squads. Good enough to win the division and scare a one seed in January, not quite good enough to be mentioned with the true contenders yet.

About Seattle Seahawks

NFL franchise based in Seattle, Washington, known for the '12th Man' crowd noise at Lumen Field.

Washington Commanders

Washington Commanders

Last year's NFC title game run was no fluke, but the Commanders have come back down to earth a bit this season. Jayden Daniels still gives them a ceiling few teams have, and the offense can hang with anybody on a given Sunday. The defense and depth issues keep them a notch below the true contenders for now.

About Washington Commanders

NFL franchise based in Landover, Maryland, serving the Washington D.C. area. Rebranded to the Commanders name in 2022.

BB Tier: Real hope, real questions

Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles

Sitting at 2-3 and dealing with real adversity this season, but this is a team that has made a habit of handling adversity before. The talent's still there, the record just hasn't caught up.

About Philadelphia Eagles

Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers

The classic "somewhere in-between" team right now. Not bad enough to write off, not good enough to call a real threat yet.

Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta Falcons

Depends who you ask. Some lists have them as a sneaky worst-to-first contender, others just see a middle-of-the-pack team riding a soft schedule. We split the difference.

Los Angeles Rams

Same story as Denver, their playoff odds are moving a lot week to week based on one result. Worth watching closely over the next month before locking in an opinion.

About Los Angeles Rams

NFL franchise that returned to Los Angeles in 2016 after decades in St. Louis. Known for the horned helmet, one of the earliest helmet logos in NFL history.

CC Tier: The muddled middle

Chicago Bears
Photo: DaRealConMan, CC BY-SA 4.0 (Wikimedia Commons)

Chicago Bears

The most argued-about team in the league right now. Looked like a top NFC contender early, then got run off the field 31-7 by Green Bay and dropped in the rankings (from around 8th-10th to around 13th-15th depending on outlet) in one week. The Tyson Bagent question at quarterback is still very much unresolved.

About Chicago Bears

One of the NFL's oldest franchises, based in Chicago, Illinois. Known for a long history of defensive-minded teams.

Colors
Navy and burnt orange

New York Giants
Photo: DaRealConMan, CC BY-SA 4.0 (Wikimedia Commons)

New York Giants

Leading the NFC East, somehow, and showing up on some worst-to-first lists. But they're also projected low in draft order conversations, which tells you this division lead might say more about the NFC East than about the Giants.

About New York Giants

NFL franchise based in East Rutherford, New Jersey, one of the league's oldest teams representing the New York area.

Founded
1925
Colors
Blue, red, white

Cincinnati Bengals

Cincinnati Bengals

Not called out as a dreg, not called out as a contender either. A roster with enough talent to matter in the AFC if the pieces click, but nothing in the research suggests they've clicked yet.

About Cincinnati Bengals

NFL franchise based in Cincinnati, Ohio, known for one of the more distinctive uniform designs in the league with tiger stripes.

New Orleans Saints

New Orleans Saints

Hovering in the league's crowded middle with no standout mention in either direction right now, which at this point of the season is its own kind of label.

About New Orleans Saints

NFL franchise based in New Orleans, Louisiana, closely tied to the city's culture and the fleur-de-lis symbol.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Jacksonville Jaguars

Another team stuck in the pack. No blowup storyline, no breakout storyline, just a season that needs the next few weeks to define it.

Miami Dolphins

Miami Dolphins

Tua's health and the offensive line remain question marks, and this team can't afford another slow start. Talent is there on paper but the margin for error is gone. Until they prove they can win the games they're supposed to win, they stay stuck in the middle of the pack.

About Miami Dolphins

NFL franchise based in Miami Gardens, Florida, known for the only perfect season in NFL history.

Carolina Panthers

Carolina Panthers

Carolina has shown flashes but still looks like a roster a tier below the true contenders. The young core is interesting, but inconsistency on both lines keeps them firmly outside the playoff conversation for now. They need a few more complementary pieces before anyone takes them seriously as a wild card threat.

About Carolina Panthers

NFL franchise based in Charlotte, North Carolina, one of the league's 1990s expansion teams.

DD Tier: Playing out the string

Indianapolis Colts

Not flagged as a true dreg team, but also nowhere near the playoff contender conversation in any of the rankings we looked at.

Los Angeles Chargers

Los Angeles Chargers

Described bluntly as a season already lost in October, with no real playoff hope left as of Week 6. That's about as clear a verdict as it gets this early.

Cleveland Browns

How we ranked them

We leaned on Week 6 records and power-ranking consensus (Bleacher Report, NBC Sports, PFF, Squawka) plus playoff probability swings noted around the league. Teams that are undefeated or near it with no bad losses sit at the top. Teams with a real signature win or a weak-schedule asterisk land in the middle tiers. Winless or one-win teams with no path land at the bottom. Where outlets disagreed, we picked a side and said so.

FAQ

Who are the top Super Bowl contenders as of Week 6 2026?

The 49ers, Chiefs, Bills, and Vikings are the clearest Super Bowl contenders, all sitting undefeated or close to it with consistent top rankings across major outlets.

Which NFL teams have no shot at the playoffs right now?

The Titans and Cardinals look like the clearest non-contenders as of mid-October, both grouped with the Dolphins near the bottom of nearly every power ranking.

Are the Chicago Bears still playoff contenders?

It's debated. The Bears looked like a top NFC team early in the season but dropped sharply after a 31-7 loss to Green Bay, and questions remain about the quarterback situation.

Why are the Green Bay Packers ranked so high after a slow start?

Their playoff probability jumped from around 13% after Week 3 to over 35% by Week 6, fueled by a dominant win over Chicago, which is a big enough swing to justify the climb.

Is Fernando Mendoza the future for the Raiders?

Opinions are split. Some analysts think the rookie could spark a turnaround in Las Vegas, while others question whether he's ready to lead a playoff-caliber offense yet.

Are the New York Giants actually good this year?

Not clearly, no. They're leading a weak NFC East and show up on some worst-to-first lists, but low draft-order projections and a blowout loss suggest the division lead is flattering their true level.
