Months of the Year Tier List: Ranked Best to Worst
Twelve months, one calendar, and a surprising amount of beef about which ones actually deserve a spot on the podium. We pulled together what people keep saying across forums, polls and casual arguments about the best and worst months, mixed in a bit of our own take, and sorted all twelve into tiers.
This isn't about weather data or astronomy. It's about vibes: what a month feels like to actually live through, what it gives you to look forward to, and what it takes away. Disagree with where December or February landed? That's half the fun. Rank your own version and see how it compares.

SS Tier: The crowd favorites

October
The consensus champion. Leaves changing, air turning crisp, Halloween at the end of it, and none of the holiday-season stress yet. It somehow manages to feel cozy and exciting at the same time.
About October
From 'octo' (eight), another holdover name, October is peak autumn with changing leaves and Halloween at the end of it. Widely considered one of the most atmospheric months of the year.

December
Front-loaded with more goodwill than any other month: Christmas, New Year's Eve, time off work, lights everywhere. The back half can drag once the big day passes, but nobody's docking points for that.
About December
From 'decem' (ten), December closes the year out with the biggest cluster of holidays on the calendar and a slow, cozy drift into year's end.

AA Tier: Reliably good

June
School's out, the weather turns reliably warm, and it still has that first-taste-of-summer excitement that wears off by August. Weddings cluster here for a reason.
About June
Named for Juno, queen of the Roman gods, June kicks off summer and wedding season. It's also when school lets out across much of the US.

- Gemini, Cancer

September
The unofficial reset month. Routines restart, the heat finally breaks, and there's a crispness in the air that feels like a reward rather than a punishment. A lot of people quietly call this their actual favorite.
About September
From the Latin 'septem' (seven), a leftover name from when it was the seventh month of the old Roman calendar. Now it's the real new year for a lot of people: school, cooler air, routines restarting.

May
Everything blooms, graduations happen, and the anticipation of summer is honestly better than summer itself. Short, sweet, mostly complaint-free.
About May
Possibly named after Maia, a Roman earth goddess, May is the month everything turns green again. It carries May Day traditions and graduation season in much of the Northern Hemisphere.

BB Tier: Solidly fine

July
Fireworks and full-on summer, no notes if you like heat. It loses a little ground for being the month where the air conditioning bill and the sunburns both peak.
About July
Renamed from Quintilis in honor of Julius Caesar, July sits at the peak of summer heat with fireworks, vacations, and long days baked in.

- Ruby
- Zodiac signs
- Cancer, Leo

March
The promise of spring without always delivering on it. Some years it's daffodils and sunshine, other years it's just a colder version of February with better marketing.
About March
Named for Mars, the Roman god of war, March is the hinge between winter and spring. It used to be the first month of the old Roman calendar, which is why September through December are numbered oddly.

April
Showers, blossoms, and a general sense of things waking up. It's steady and pleasant without ever quite becoming anyone's favorite month.
About April
Spring's breakout month, known for showers, blossoms, and a name whose origin is debated but often linked to the Latin 'aperire,' meaning to open. Home to April Fools' Day and tax deadlines in the US.

CC Tier: Mixed feelings

August
Summer starts showing its age here: the heat feels less fun and more like a chore, and the looming return of school and routine hangs over the whole month. Still has beach trips going for it though.
About August
Renamed for Emperor Augustus, August is summer's last full stand before school and routine come back. Many businesses and whole countries slow down for August holidays.

- Leo, Virgo

February
Short on days and short on goodwill, redeemed slightly by Valentine's Day. Most of the complaints about it are really just complaints about winter in general.
About February
The shortest month, stuck with an awkward 28 days (29 in leap years) and the job of hosting Valentine's Day in the thick of winter. Named after Februa, a Roman purification festival.

- 28 (29 in leap years)

DD Tier: Hard to love

January
The comedown month. All the bills and cold weather of December with none of the holiday cheer, plus the pressure of resolutions everyone quietly abandons by week three.
About January
The first month, named in English tradition after the Roman god Janus, who looked both backward and forward. It's the full reset button: new year, new resolutions, same cold weather.

- Garnet
- Zodiac signs
- Capricorn, Aquarius
FF Tier: Everyone's least favorite

November
Gray, short on daylight, and sandwiched between October's charm and December's payoff. Thanksgiving earns it some credit in the US, but globally it's the month most people forget to mention when asked about favorites.
About November
From 'novem' (nine), November is the gray transition month between fall color and real winter. It carries Thanksgiving in the US and not a whole lot else to look forward to for many people.

- Birthstone
- Topaz
- Zodiac signs
- Scorpio, Sagittarius
How we ranked them
We weighed what people consistently say about each month: the holidays and traditions it carries, the weather it delivers, the mood it puts people in, and how much it feels like a "bonus" month versus a slog to get through. Where opinion splits hard (looking at you, July and August), we picked the side the broader consensus leans toward and said so. This is a feelings ranking, not a meteorology report.

Rank these yourselfFAQ
What is the most popular month of the year?
In most informal rankings and polls, October and December come out on top, thanks to Halloween, changing leaves, and the holiday run respectively.
What is the most disliked month?
January and November usually get the most complaints: January for the post-holiday crash and cold, November for being a gray in-between month with little payoff.
Why do September, October, November, and December have numbers that don't match their position?
They're named from Latin for seven, eight, nine, and ten because the old Roman calendar started in March. When January and February got added to the front, the names stuck even though the numbers no longer lined up.
Which month has the most holidays?
December, by a wide margin, with Christmas, New Year's Eve, Hanukkah, and other celebrations all landing in the same few weeks.
Which month is considered the best weather-wise?
June through September tend to poll well for warm, reliable weather, while October gets credit for being warm enough with a lot more atmosphere.
