Sith Tier List: Ranking the Dark Lords of the Sith
Ten of the most dangerous people in the galaxy, ranked from legendary to "wait, who?" This list covers movies, the old EU/Legends novels and games, and the current canon, because the Sith have never stayed confined to just one medium.
We're judging them on power, menace, impact on the saga, and how much they stick in your head after the credits roll or the book closes. Fan and critic opinions get pulled in, but where the fandom argues (and it argues a lot about this topic), we picked a side. Feel free to yell at us about where your favorite landed.

SS Tier: The Legends

Darth Sidious (Palpatine)
The guy who orchestrated the fall of the entire Jedi Order while running the galaxy's government in broad daylight. Every other Sith on this list is a chess piece he moved at some point, including Vader. He's the Rule of Two's greatest success story and its biggest cautionary tale rolled into one wrinkled package.
About Darth Sidious (Palpatine)
The secret Sith Lord who rose to become Galactic Chancellor and later Emperor, engineering the Clone Wars and the fall of the Jedi from the shadows. Played by Ian McDiarmid across multiple films.
- First appearance
- The Phantom Menace (1999)
- Apprentices
- Darth Maul, Count Dooku, Darth Vader

Darth Vader
Say what you want about his redemption arc, but as a Sith, Vader is the image everyone pictures when they hear the word. The breathing, the Death Star hallway scene, choking admirals for fun. He's also the rare Sith whose internal conflict makes him more interesting, not less.
About Darth Vader
Born Anakin Skywalker, he fell to the dark side and became the Emperor's enforcer, appearing across the original and prequel trilogies. Known for his mask, his breathing, and his eventual redemption in Return of the Jedi.
- First appearance
- Star Wars (1977)
- Master
- Darth Sidious
AA Tier: Genuinely Formidable

Darth Plagueis
He taught Palpatine everything and reportedly figured out how to cheat death itself, at least according to the legend Palpatine tells Anakin at the opera. We never see him at full power on screen, which is exactly why fans argue endlessly about just how strong he really was. The novel fills in a lot, but the mystery is part of the appeal.
About Darth Plagueis
Palpatine's Sith Master, referenced in dialogue in Revenge of the Sith and detailed in the novel Darth Plagueis. Said to have discovered a way to cheat death using the Force.
- Introduced
- Mentioned in Revenge of the Sith (2005)
- Apprentice
- Darth Sidious

Darth Bane
Without Bane there's no Rule of Two, no master-and-apprentice setup that defines every Sith on this entire list. He rebuilt the Sith from near extinction into the lean, patient order that eventually swallowed the Republic whole. The Legends novels make him one of the most strategically brilliant Sith ever written, even if casual movie fans have never heard his name.
About Darth Bane
A Sith Lord from the Legends continuity who created the Rule of Two after surviving the destruction of the old Sith order. Central to the novels Path of Destruction, Rule of Two, and Dynasty of Evil.
- Continuity
- Star Wars Legends
- Known for
- Creating the Rule of Two

Darth Revan
A Jedi who fell, built his own Sith Empire, then got mind-wiped and redeemed, only to matter again later. Knights of the Old Republic fans will fight you over his placement here, and honestly they've got a point, since few Sith have a resume this wild. He's proof the Old Republic era has stories just as dark as anything in the films.
About Darth Revan
A former Jedi who turned to the dark side, built a Sith Empire, and later returned to the light, central to the game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Exists only in Legends continuity.
- Continuity
- Star Wars Legends
- Key game
- Knights of the Old Republic (2003)
BB Tier: Strong but Overshadowed

Darth Maul
Incredible screen presence, double-bladed lightsaber, that Duel of the Fates fight. Then the movie cuts him in half and the character spends years as a cautionary tale about style over substance. Clone Wars and Solo brought him back and gave him actual depth, which is the only reason he's not lower.
About Darth Maul
A Zabrak Sith apprentice trained by Darth Sidious, famous for his double-bladed lightsaber and his duel with Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Later returned in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Solo.
- First appearance
- The Phantom Menace (1999)
- Species
- Zabrak

Count Dooku (Darth Tyranus)
A former Jedi Master turned Sith Lord should be terrifying, and Christopher Lee's performance mostly sells it. But Dooku spends most of his screen time as a puppet taking orders, losing duels, and getting unceremoniously executed by his own apprentice's hand. Elegant weapon, not the most elegant career arc.
About Count Dooku (Darth Tyranus)
A former Jedi Master who left the Order and became Darth Sidious's second apprentice, leading the Separatist movement during the Clone Wars. Played by Christopher Lee.
- First appearance
- Attack of the Clones (2002)
- Former title
- Jedi Master

Darth Traya (Kreia)
One of the best-written characters in any Star Wars game, full stop. Kreia's philosophy about the Force, attachment, and the Jedi/Sith binary is genuinely challenging stuff. She ranks here and not higher only because her power is murkier than her ideas, and this is a power list first.
About Darth Traya (Kreia)
A central character in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, Kreia is a former Jedi and Sith with a philosophy that questions both orders. Known as one of the best-written characters in Star Wars games.
- Continuity
- Star Wars Legends
- Key game
- Knights of the Old Republic II (2004)
CC Tier: Fan Favorites with Gaps

Asajj Ventress
Technically never a full Sith, more an apprentice Dooku wouldn't officially acknowledge, which is exactly her tragedy. Clone Wars gave her one of the best redemption arcs in the franchise, dual blades and all. She belongs on this list for how close she got, even if the title never quite stuck.
About Asajj Ventress
A former Jedi apprentice turned assassin who served as Count Dooku's secret agent, prominently featured in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. She later broke from the Sith and became a bounty hunter.
- First appearance
- Clone Wars micro-series (2003)
- Species
- Dathomirian
DD Tier: More Hype Than Impact

Darth Caedus
Jacen Solo's fall to the dark side in the Legends novels was meant to be a huge, tragic event, Han and Leia's son turning into a Sith Lord. In practice, the Legacy of the Force books get a mixed reception at best, and Caedus reads to a lot of fans as mopey rather than menacing. Interesting idea, uneven execution.
About Darth Caedus
The Sith identity taken by Jacen Solo, son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, in the Legacy of the Force novel series. His fall to the dark side is one of the more controversial storylines in Legends.
- Continuity
- Star Wars Legends
- Real name
- Jacen Solo
How we ranked them
We weighed raw Force power and lightsaber skill, but also story impact: did this character change the galaxy, define the saga's themes, or just show up and look cool for one arc? Longevity and influence over other Sith counted too. Fan consensus from forums and reviews shaped most placements, with our own judgment breaking ties where opinion splits hardest.

Rank these yourselfFAQ
Who is the most powerful Sith of all time?
Most fans and the films themselves point to Darth Sidious. He manipulated two entire wars, destroyed the Jedi Order, and ruled the galaxy as Emperor, all without anyone catching on until it was too late.
Was Darth Maul stronger than Darth Vader?
No, not generally. Maul is a skilled duelist, but Vader has far greater raw Force power and a much bigger body of feats across the saga.
Is Asajj Ventress actually a Sith?
Not officially. She trained under Count Dooku as his secret apprentice but was never formally given the title of Sith Lord, and Dooku eventually turned on her.
Who created the Rule of Two?
Darth Bane, after the Sith were nearly wiped out. He decided only two Sith should exist at a time, a master and an apprentice, to avoid the infighting that destroyed earlier Sith orders.
Is Darth Revan canon?
Darth Revan originates from the Knights of the Old Republic game and belongs to the Legends continuity, not the current Disney canon.
