Christmas Characters Tier List: Every Holiday Icon Ranked
Twenty one of the most famous faces of the season, from the big guy himself to the ones who only show up for a few minutes of screen time but steal every scene. We pulled together what fans and critics tend to agree on across forums, reviews and decades of rewatches, then made the calls where people genuinely disagree.
This covers movies, TV specials and one very grumpy miser duo. Some of these characters carry entire franchises. Others are a single scene that became a meme. Rank them yourself and see where you land.

SS Tier: The pillars of Christmas

Santa Claus
The original. Every other character on this list exists in his orbit one way or another, whether they're helping him, doubting him, or standing in for him. No single version of Santa defines him, which is exactly why he's untouchable.
About Santa Claus
The central figure of Christmas gift-giving folklore, based loosely on Saint Nicholas and shaped by centuries of legend, poetry and advertising. He appears across nearly every Christmas movie and special in some form.
- Origin
- Based on Saint Nicholas
- Modern image
- Shaped largely in the 19th and 20th centuries

The Grinch
A character so good he turned his own name into a verb. Dr. Seuss built a mean, cave-dwelling grump and somehow made his heart growing three sizes feel earned instead of cheesy.
About The Grinch
A grouchy, Christmas-hating creature created by Dr. Seuss in the 1957 book How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, later adapted into a 1966 animated special and multiple films.
- Creator
- Dr. Seuss
- Book published
- 1957

Ebenezer Scrooge
Dickens basically invented the redemption arc template everyone else on this list borrows from. "Scrooge" entered the dictionary as a synonym for miser, which tells you everything about how deep this character cut.
About Ebenezer Scrooge
The miserly central character of Charles Dickens' 1843 novella A Christmas Carol, who is visited by three ghosts and transformed by the experience.
- Creator
- Charles Dickens
- Book published
- 1843

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
A reindeer with a glowing nose carried a song, a stop-motion special, and decades of merchandise. The bullying-to-triumph arc is simple, but it's the blueprint half the Christmas specials on this list copy.
About Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
A reindeer with a glowing red nose, introduced in a 1939 Montgomery Ward promotional booklet and later made famous by the song and the 1964 stop-motion TV special.
- First appeared
- 1939
- Famous special
- 1964 stop-motion TV special
AA Tier: Beloved and basically essential

Clark Griswold
Chevy Chase turned holiday overachieving into comedy gold. The exploding sewer line and 25,000 twinkling lights are the whole joke of modern Christmas stress wrapped into one guy.
About Clark Griswold
A well-meaning father determined to have a perfect family Christmas despite constant disasters, played by Chevy Chase in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.
- Played by
- Chevy Chase
- Movie
- Christmas Vacation, 1989

Buddy the Elf
Will Ferrell in yellow tights, eating spaghetti with syrup, somehow became a new Christmas tradition in a genre that's mostly reruns from the 60s. "The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear" is quoted every December.
About Buddy the Elf
A human raised by Santa's elves who travels to New York to find his birth father, played by Will Ferrell in the 2003 film Elf.
- Played by
- Will Ferrell
- Movie
- Elf, 2003

George Bailey
It's a Wonderful Life only works because Jimmy Stewart makes George's despair feel real before the angel shows up. Zuzu's petals and "every time a bell rings" are permanently lodged in the culture.
About George Bailey
A despairing man shown what life would be like had he never been born, by the angel Clarence, played by Jimmy Stewart in It's a Wonderful Life.
- Played by
- Jimmy Stewart
- Movie
- It's a Wonderful Life, 1946

Charlie Brown
A kid depressed about commercialized Christmas who just wants a real tree. The sad little sapling he picks is one of the most quietly subversive images in any holiday special.
About Charlie Brown
Charles Schulz's perpetually anxious everyman, central to the 1965 TV special A Charlie Brown Christmas, in which he struggles with holiday commercialism.
- Creator
- Charles Schulz
- Special
- A Charlie Brown Christmas, 1965

Kevin McCallister
A paint can to the face, a blowtorch, a tarantula. Home Alone turned a scared, abandoned kid into the most quotable booby-trap architect in movie history.
About Kevin McCallister
A young boy accidentally left behind by his family at Christmas who defends his house from burglars, played by Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone.
- Played by
- Macaulay Culkin
- Movie
- Home Alone, 1990

Jack Skellington
The Pumpkin King trying to take over Christmas is one of the weirder premises in holiday media and it completely works. Tim Burton's stop-motion look and "This Is Halloween" give him a presence none of the live-action guys can match.
About Jack Skellington
The Pumpkin King of Halloween Town who becomes fascinated with Christmas, the lead character of Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas.
- Movie
- The Nightmare Before Christmas, 1993
BB Tier: Great supporting players

Ralphie Parker
He wants a Red Ryder BB gun and the whole world keeps telling him he'll shoot his eye out. A Christmas Story made his specific, petty kid-logic universally relatable.
About Ralphie Parker
A young boy obsessed with getting a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas, the narrator and lead of the film A Christmas Story.
- Movie
- A Christmas Story, 1983

Krampus
The anti-Santa has exploded in popularity the last decade, especially with younger horror fans who wanted something darker than another cheerful elf. Folklore purists will say the 2015 movie flattened him, but he's never been more famous.
About Krampus
A horned, demonic figure from Central European folklore who punishes misbehaving children as a counterpart to Saint Nicholas, popularized more recently in Western horror films.
- Origin
- Central European folklore
- Modern film
- Krampus, 2015

Frosty the Snowman
A magic hat and a kids' song turned a snowman into a melting-based tragedy that somehow stays upbeat. He's beloved, but he doesn't do much beyond the one special and the one tune.
About Frosty the Snowman
A snowman who comes to life thanks to a magic hat, introduced in a 1950 song and made famous by the 1969 animated TV special.
- Song release
- 1950
- TV special
- 1969

Cindy Lou Who
She's only two when the Grinch catches her, and that one line, "Santa Claus, why? Why are you taking our Christmas tree?" does more emotional work than most adult characters manage in a whole movie.
About Cindy Lou Who
A small child from the town of Whoville who catches the Grinch stealing Christmas decorations. She's the emotional center of the story's turning point.
- First appeared
- 1957 book

Yukon Cornelius
The prospector who licks his pickaxe for gold and never finds any is the most purely fun side character in the Rudolph special. He doesn't get a huge arc, he's just a blast every time he's on screen.
About Yukon Cornelius
A boisterous prospector searching for silver and gold who joins Rudolph's journey in the classic stop-motion special.
- Special
- Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, 1964
CC Tier: Fun but a notch below

Mrs. Claus
She's been around in some form for over a century, but she's almost always defined by proximity to Santa rather than her own story. Different specials give her wildly different personalities, which is part of the problem.
About Mrs. Claus
Santa's wife, a supporting figure in Christmas folklore who runs the North Pole alongside him. She's appeared in various specials with differing names and personalities.
- Role
- Santa's wife

Hermey the Elf
The elf who wants to be a dentist is a sweet, odd little subplot in Rudolph. He's charming but he's riding shotgun on someone else's reindeer sleigh of a story.
About Hermey the Elf
A misfit elf who dreams of becoming a dentist instead of making toys, a key side character in the 1964 Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer special.
- Special
- Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, 1964

Jack Frost
He's more concept than character, nipping at your nose in a song lyric more than actually doing anything in most tellings. Different movies and specials reinvent him so often he's never quite settled into one identity.
About Jack Frost
A folkloric personification of frost and winter weather, appearing in various songs, stories and adaptations with no single fixed origin or personality.
- Origin
- Folklore figure

Bumble the Abominable Snow Monster
Scary at first, sweet once he loses his teeth and gets a star for the tree topper. He's a great design, but he's a plot device more than a fully realized character.
About Bumble the Abominable Snow Monster
A fearsome snow creature who turns out to be gentle once his teeth are removed, appearing in the Rudolph stop-motion special.
- Special
- Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, 1964
DD Tier: Divisive or dated

Heat Miser
The Year Without a Santa Claus gave him a genuinely catchy song and a cult following that's arguably bigger now than when the special aired. Fans are split on whether he or Snow Miser is better, and honestly that rivalry is the whole appeal.
About Heat Miser
A fiery, heat-controlling character and rival to his brother Snow Miser, from the 1974 stop-motion special The Year Without a Santa Claus.
- Special
- The Year Without a Santa Claus, 1974

Snow Miser
Heat Miser's icy counterpart gets slightly less love in most fan polls, usually losing out because his song isn't quite as quoted. He's basically the same character concept twice, and somebody had to rank second.
About Snow Miser
An icy, cold-controlling character and sibling rival to Heat Miser, from the same 1974 holiday stop-motion special.
- Special
- The Year Without a Santa Claus, 1974
How we ranked them
We weighed cultural staying power, how well the character works outside their original special or movie, and whether they actually hold up on a rewatch instead of just riding nostalgia. Characters who've become shorthand for something (a scrooge, a grinch) rank higher than ones who are beloved but stay confined to one story. We also factored in how often each name comes up in modern pop culture, not just old best-of lists.

Rank these yourselfFAQ
Who is the most popular Christmas character?
Santa Claus, by a wide margin. He's the one figure every other character on this list either serves, imitates, or reacts to.
Is the Grinch a good guy or a villain?
He starts as a villain who steals Christmas, but the story turns him into one of the most beloved redemption arcs in holiday media once his heart grows.
Why do fans argue about Heat Miser vs Snow Miser?
Both come from The Year Without a Santa Claus and share the same gimmick, a song about their weather powers. Fans split over whose song and whose personality is funnier, and there's no clear consensus.
Is Krampus a real folklore figure?
Yes, Krampus comes from Central European folklore, predating his modern horror movie fame. The newer pop culture version is darker and more commercialized than the traditional legend.
Why does Mrs. Claus rank lower than expected?
She's a widely recognized character but rarely gets her own consistent story or personality across different specials and movies, so she tends to stay in Santa's shadow.
