The Lion King Characters, Ranked
The Pride Lands are full of unforgettable faces, but not every character carries the movie the same way. We're ranking the six big names from the 1994 Disney classic: Simba, Mufasa, Scar, Nala, Timon and Pumbaa.
This is based on what fans and critics keep saying across reviews and forums, mixed with our own read where the debate gets heated (and it does, especially around the middle of this list). Rank them yourself after and see where you land.

SS Tier: The ones who make the movie

Scar
Scar is one of the best Disney villains ever drawn, full stop. Jeremy Irons' delivery turns every line into a dagger, and 'Be Prepared' is the rare villain song that actually sounds like a coup being planned. Without him the whole movie has no engine.
About Scar
Scar is Mufasa's younger brother and the film's central villain, whose jealousy over the throne leads him to orchestrate his brother's death and seize power. His reign leaves the Pride Lands in ruin.

Simba
He's the title character for a reason. We watch him go from a cub bouncing around to his dad's shadow, to a guilt-ridden runaway hiding out with bugs, to a king who finally stands up. That full arc is why fans keep coming back to him over anyone else in the cast.
About Simba
Simba is the son of Mufasa and the rightful heir to the Pride Lands throne in Disney's The Lion King (1994). He flees after his father's death, grows up away from his responsibilities, and eventually returns to reclaim his place as king.

AA Tier: Essential to the Pride Lands

Mufasa
He's only in about a third of the movie and he still dominates every conversation about it. James Earl Jones gave him a voice that sounds like it belongs on a mountain, and the stampede scene still gets cited as one of the most devastating moments in any animated film.
About Mufasa
Mufasa is Simba's father and the king of the Pride Lands. He dies in a stampede orchestrated by his brother Scar, a death that remains one of the most referenced scenes in animated film history.

Pumbaa
Somehow the warthog who introduces 'Hakuna Matata' ends up one of the most quoted characters in the movie. He's funny without ever feeling like a gimmick, and he gets a real moment of courage later on, charging a hyena to protect Simba, that fans point to as proof he's more than comic relief.
About Pumbaa
Pumbaa is a warthog and Timon's best friend, known for his good nature, his taste for bugs, and his flatulence-based comic relief.

BB Tier: Beloved, but not the main event

Timon
Great chemistry with Pumbaa, sharp one-liners, and he basically co-owns the catchiest song in the movie. Fans split on whether he's as essential as Pumbaa or just riding his coattails, we land on the latter, which is why he sits just below him here.
About Timon
Timon is a wisecracking meerkat who, along with Pumbaa, takes in young Simba and teaches him the 'Hakuna Matata' philosophy of living without worry.

CC Tier: Solid, not spectacular

Nala
She's sharp, she calls out Simba's nonsense, and the reunion scene has real heat to it. But the script doesn't give her much to do beyond being the reason Simba finally goes home, and that's the common complaint fans bring up when she comes up in rankings like this.
About Nala
Nala is Simba's childhood friend and eventual mate, who stays in the Pride Lands under Scar's rule before crossing paths with Simba again as an adult.

- Niketa Calame (young), Moira Kelly (adult)
How we ranked them
We weighed how much each character drives the story, how memorable their lines and songs are, and how well they've held up as pop culture icons over the past three decades. Villain menace, comic relief and emotional weight all count. Consensus from fan discussions and critic reviews shaped the order, with our own tiebreakers where the arguments split down the middle.

Rank these yourselfFAQ
Who is the most popular Lion King character?
Simba and Scar consistently top fan and critic rankings, with Simba winning on emotional arc and Scar winning on sheer villain quality.
Why is Scar considered one of Disney's best villains?
His motivation is simple and petty (jealousy over the throne), his voice work by Jeremy Irons is dripping with sarcasm, and his song 'Be Prepared' is genuinely menacing rather than silly.
Is Nala underrated in The Lion King?
Some fans think so, arguing she's tougher and smarter than the script gives her credit for. Others point out she's mostly reactive to Simba's story rather than driving her own.
Do fans prefer Timon or Pumbaa?
It's close, but Pumbaa tends to edge out Timon in rankings thanks to his unexpected moment of bravery and general warmth, while Timon is loved mostly for his sarcasm.
How much screen time does Mufasa actually have?
Less than people remember, he's absent for most of the back half of the movie, but his influence (and his ghost) shapes nearly every decision Simba makes afterward.
