Harry Potter Characters Tier List: Ranked Best to Worst
Seven books, eight movies, and a cast so deep you could argue about it for hours (people do). We ranked all 17 of the most talked-about characters from the Harry Potter series based on how fans and critics actually feel about them: writing, impact on the story, and how much they stick with you after the last page.
This isn't about who's "good" or "evil." Snape is in a high tier for a reason that has nothing to do with being likeable. Expect some fights in the comments, especially over anyone wearing a locket or a cardigan named Weasley. Rank them yourself if you think we got it wrong.

SS Tier: The ones who make the series

Severus Snape
The whole series rereads differently once you know about Lily. Alan Rickman's performance did a lot of heavy lifting too, but on the page Snape is still the best-executed twist in the books: a man who spends decades being cruel to a kid because he can't forgive him for existing.
About Severus Snape
Potions master, later Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher and headmaster, revealed to have spent the series secretly protecting Harry out of lifelong love for his mother, Lily Potter. One of the series' most debated characters.
- House
- Slytherin (student)
- Role
- Potions Master, Headmaster
- Actor (films)
- Alan Rickman

Albus Dumbledore
Wise old wizard on the surface, deeply flawed strategist underneath. The reveal of his past with Grindelwald and his willingness to let Harry walk toward death "like a pig for slaughter" makes him far more complicated than the kindly headmaster he plays for six books.
About Albus Dumbledore
Longtime headmaster of Hogwarts and one of the wizarding world's most powerful and respected wizards. His past connection to dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald complicates his reputation as a purely benevolent figure.
- Role
- Headmaster of Hogwarts
- Actors (films)
- Richard Harris, Michael Gambon

Hermione Granger
Smartest person in every room and the one who actually reads the footnotes. S.P.E.W. is a bit much, sure, but she's also the one who remembers the Basilisk is afraid of the rooster and casts the Patronus that saves everyone's bacon more than once.
About Hermione Granger
Harry's close friend and one of the smartest witches of her generation, Muggle-born and fiercely principled. She co-founds S.P.E.W. and is instrumental in solving many of the series' central mysteries.
- House
- Gryffindor
- Patronus
- Otter
- Actor (films)
- Emma Watson
AA Tier: Fan favorites for good reason

Minerva McGonagall
Turns into a cat, runs Hogwarts with zero patience for nonsense, and still gets the single best "I'd like to see you try" moment in the whole series when she finally stands up to Umbridge. Strict, fair, and secretly the emotional backbone of the staff room.
About Minerva McGonagall
Transfiguration professor and Deputy Headmistress of Hogwarts, later headmistress. An Animagus who can turn into a tabby cat, and head of Gryffindor House.
- House
- Gryffindor (student)
- Role
- Transfiguration Professor, Deputy Headmistress
- Actor (films)
- Maggie Smith

Ron Weasley
Gets flattened into "comic relief" sometimes, which undersells a kid who grows up with five older brothers to live up to and still walks into the Forbidden Forest with a dying friend. The chess match in book one is still one of the best setpieces in the series.
About Ron Weasley
Harry's best friend from his first train ride to Hogwarts, youngest Weasley son, and eventual husband of Hermione Granger. Loyal and brave despite recurring insecurity about living up to his family.
- House
- Gryffindor
- Patronus
- Jack Russell terrier
- Actor (films)
- Rupert Grint

Rubeus Hagrid
The first adult who's ever kind to Harry, and the one who shows up with a hut full of rock cakes and a soft spot for things that could eat you. Loyal to a fault, occasionally reckless with dangerous pets, and the heart of the whole saga.
About Rubeus Hagrid
Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts, and the half-giant who first tells Harry he's a wizard. Known for his love of dangerous magical creatures and unwavering loyalty to Dumbledore and the Potter family.
- Role
- Keeper of Keys and Grounds
- Actor (films)
- Robbie Coltrane

Lord Voldemort
A genuinely frightening villain who turned immortality into a design flaw with the horcrux plot. Loses a little steam in the films when he's reduced to snake hissing and cape swooshing, but on the page the backstory in the orphanage is genuinely chilling.
About Lord Voldemort
Born Tom Riddle, the series' primary antagonist and the dark wizard responsible for Harry's parents' deaths. He split his soul into multiple horcruxes in a bid for immortality.
- Birth name
- Tom Marvolo Riddle
- House
- Slytherin
- Actor (films)
- Ralph Fiennes

Sirius Black
Thirteen years in Azkaban for a crime he didn't commit, and he still has enough fight left to be the fun, reckless godfather Harry never had. His death in the Department of Mysteries is the one that still gets people in the comments section.
About Sirius Black
Harry's godfather, wrongly imprisoned in Azkaban for twelve years for a crime committed by Peter Pettigrew. An Animagus who can transform into a large black dog, and James Potter's best friend at school.
- House
- Gryffindor
- Animagus form
- Black dog
- Actor (films)
- Gary Oldman

Luna Lovegood
Reads the Quibbler upside down, believes in Nargles, and turns out to be one of the bravest people at the Battle of Hogwarts. Luna gets written off as "quirky" but she's actually one of the only characters who's completely at peace with herself.
About Luna Lovegood
An eccentric Ravenclaw a year below Harry, daughter of Quibbler editor Xenophilius Lovegood. Known for her unconventional beliefs and her quiet, unshakeable bravery.
- House
- Ravenclaw
- Patronus
- Hare
- Actor (films)
- Evanna Lynch

Fred and George Weasley
Built a joke shop empire out of detention-worthy pranks and somehow made leaving school on a flying broomstick, fireworks blazing, feel like a legitimate act of rebellion. Losing one of them in the Battle of Hogwarts is still one of the hardest hits in the series.
About Fred and George Weasley
Identical twin brothers of Ron and Ginny, known for pranks and ultimately founding the joke shop Weasley's Wizard Wheezes. Fred is killed during the Battle of Hogwarts.
- House
- Gryffindor
- Business
- Weasley's Wizard Wheezes
- Actors (films)
- James and Oliver Phelps
BB Tier: Solid, memorable, not flawless

Harry Potter
The Boy Who Lived carries the whole plot but isn't always the most interesting person in his own books, especially next to Hermione and Ron. Still, the scar, the scar of losing people over and over, and the walk into the forest in Deathly Hallows earn him real credit.
About Harry Potter
The title character and protagonist of J.K. Rowling's seven-book series, known as "the Boy Who Lived" after surviving an attack by Lord Voldemort as an infant. He attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and ultimately defeats Voldemort.
- House
- Gryffindor
- Patronus
- Stag
- Actor (films)
- Daniel Radcliffe

Remus Lupin
A genuinely warm teacher and one of the few adults who treats Harry like a person, not a legend. His werewolf condition is one of the series' better metaphors, though his choice to abandon Tonks for a stretch is a real blemish fans still argue about.
About Remus Lupin
Defence Against the Dark Arts professor and werewolf, member of the original Order of the Phoenix and friend of James Potter and Sirius Black. Marries Nymphadora Tonks and is killed at the Battle of Hogwarts.
- House
- Gryffindor (student)
- Condition
- Lycanthropy
- Actor (films)
- David Thewlis

Neville Longbottom
Starts as the kid who can't remember a password and ends up beheading a snake with Gryffindor's sword. Few arcs in the series are as satisfying, even if it takes until the very last book for Neville to really get his moment.
About Neville Longbottom
Harry's Gryffindor classmate, raised by his grandmother after his parents were tortured into insanity by Bellatrix Lestrange. Grows from a timid student into one of the key fighters at the Battle of Hogwarts.
- House
- Gryffindor
- Actor (films)
- Matthew Lewis

Bellatrix Lestrange
Gleefully unhinged and genuinely scary, especially torturing Hermione in Malfoy Manor. She's more a force of chaos than a fully developed character, which is fine, that's the job, but it keeps her just below the top ranks.
About Bellatrix Lestrange
One of Voldemort's most devoted and dangerous followers, a Death Eater responsible for torturing Neville's parents and later killing Sirius Black and Dobby. Known for her volatile, sadistic personality.
- House
- Slytherin
- Actor (films)
- Helena Bonham Carter

Ginny Weasley
Gets shortchanged by the films, which flatten her into "Harry's girlfriend" when the books give her a sharper tongue, a Bat-Bogey Hex, and a whole possession-by-Voldemort backstory in book two that barely gets mentioned again.
About Ginny Weasley
The youngest Weasley sibling and the only Weasley daughter, who later marries Harry Potter. Possessed by a fragment of Voldemort's soul via Tom Riddle's diary in her first year.
- House
- Gryffindor
- Actor (films)
- Bonnie Wright
CC Tier: Fine, but overshadowed

Draco Malfoy
Works best as a mirror for Harry: same age, opposite upbringing, very different choices. His arc in Half-Blood Prince trying (and failing) to kill Dumbledore is genuinely sympathetic, but for most of the series he's mostly just a schoolyard bully with a bigger vocabulary.
About Draco Malfoy
Harry's rival at Hogwarts, from a wealthy pure-blood family aligned with Voldemort. His storyline darkens significantly in Half-Blood Prince when he's tasked with assassinating Dumbledore.
- House
- Slytherin
- Actor (films)
- Tom Felton
FF Tier: Loved to hate

Dolores Umbridge
No redeeming qualities, and that's the point. The pink cardigan and the kitten plates make her worse than Voldemort to a lot of readers because her cruelty is bureaucratic and petty instead of grand. Genuinely one of the best-written villains in modern fiction, ranked low here only because she's designed to be hated, not loved.
About Dolores Umbridge
A Ministry of Magic official who becomes Hogwarts' Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher and later High Inquisitor, enforcing cruel disciplinary methods. Widely regarded as one of the series' most hated characters despite committing no direct killings.
- Role
- Ministry Official, Hogwarts High Inquisitor
- Actor (films)
- Imelda Staunton
How we ranked them
We weighed how well each character is written, how much they drive the plot, and how often they come up in fan discussions and critical reviews. We also factored in emotional impact, the big moments, the twists, the deaths, and how a character holds up on a reread. Where fandom is genuinely split, we picked a side and said so.

Rank these yourselfFAQ
Who is the most popular Harry Potter character?
Hermione Granger and Severus Snape consistently top fan polls and critical rankings, with Hermione praised for her competence and Snape for his tragic backstory.
Why is Snape ranked so high if he's cruel to Harry?
Rankings like this one weigh writing and impact, not likability. Snape's arc, revealed fully at the end of the series, is widely considered one of the best-constructed character twists in modern fantasy.
Is Dolores Umbridge worse than Voldemort?
Many readers say yes, emotionally. Voldemort is a distant, almost mythic threat for most of the series, while Umbridge's cruelty is petty, personal and up close, which is why she ranks so low here despite being so well written.
Why isn't Draco Malfoy ranked higher?
Draco has a strong arc in Half-Blood Prince, but for most of the series he functions mainly as a bully and foil for Harry rather than a fully independent character, which puts him in the middle of the pack.
Where do Fred and George Weasley rank compared to Ron?
We ranked Fred and George and Ron in the same A tier. They're judged as comic relief with real emotional weight, especially around Fred's death at the Battle of Hogwarts.
