October 2026 Video Game Releases, Ranked

October 2026 is an absolute traffic jam of a release month. People are calling it "Broktober" for a reason: Gears, Call of Duty, Kingdom Hearts, Star Wars racing and a horror glut all landing within weeks of each other, plus a wave of Switch 2 ports riding the new hardware's launch window.

We went through what fans and critics are actually saying across reviews, Steam charts and forum chatter to rank all 15 of this month's big releases. Some picks were easy. Others, like AION 2's huge player numbers versus its rocky review scores, split people right down the middle. Here's where we landed, and you're welcome to argue with us.

1 Gears of War: E-Day

The prequel nobody was sure they needed turns out to be the best way into this franchise in years. Setting the story 14 years before the original game lets newcomers in without homework, and longtime fans get to watch the world break for the first time. It's showing up near the top of basically every October list we checked, and it deserves it.

2 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4

The tentpole release of the month by sheer marketing weight, and it's sitting in nearly every ranking out there. But the conversation isn't all celebration this time. A fourth Modern Warfare entry this generation has people openly asking if the series is coasting on its name rather than earning the hype. Big, yes. Beloved unconditionally? Less certain.

About Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4

The latest entry in the long-running Modern Warfare sub-series, releasing October 23, 2026. It's the current generation's fourth Modern Warfare installment, leading to open debate about franchise fatigue.

3 Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve

One of the quieter success stories of October, this one's been pulling 4.4.5 out of 5 review from at least one major outlet. It doesn't have the marketing budget of COD or Gears, but it keeps cracking top five lists anyway, which says a lot about how solid the flying actually feels.

About Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve

The latest entry in the long-running aerial combat series, released October 2, 2026. It's earned at least one 4.4.5 out of 5 review despite lower marketing visibility than other October releases.

AION 2

4. AION 2

The single biggest engagement story of the month, full stop. Peaking at 400,000 concurrent players on Steam, it's been sitting near the top of the most-played charts since launch on October 5. The flight combat and world design are genuinely praised. Whether the free-to-play systems ruin it is the debate of the month.

Planet Zoo 2

5. Planet Zoo 2

A sequel built for the long haul rather than a flashy headline grab, Planet Zoo 2 brings deeper animal AI and expanded terrain tools that sim fans have been asking for. It won't out shout the shooters and RPGs above it this month, but it carves out a solid mid pack spot as the reliable management fix of October. Expect it to quietly eat hundreds of hours while the louder releases dominate the trailers.

About Planet Zoo 2

Planet Zoo 2 is a zoo management simulation game developed by Frontier Developments, the sequel to the 2019 hit Planet Zoo. It lets players design, build and manage their own zoos, caring for realistic animals with detailed behaviors and needs.

Final Fantasy Resonance

6. Final Fantasy Resonance

A new mainline-adjacent entry that leans hard on nostalgia while trying some real combat experiments. Early footage looks promising but it lands in a month stacked with heavier hitters, so it slots in the middle of the pack rather than near the top. Worth watching, not worth clearing your whole month for.

About Final Fantasy Resonance

Final Fantasy Resonance is an entry in Square Enix's long-running Final Fantasy role-playing game franchise, known for its epic storytelling, fantasy worlds, and cinematic combat. Details of the title point to a continuation of the series' tradition of blending music, narrative, and turn-based or action-oriented battle systems.

9. Ghost of Yotei: Complete Edition

Dropping October 1 alongside the Switch 2 launch rush, this edition adds the 'Echoes of Sekigahara' narrative expansion and a new combat-survival mode. It's less about new buzz and more about giving an already loyal fanbase a reason to come back, and it's doing that job well.

Steam's own analysis calls this an 'inventive Soulslike,' and that description is doing a lot of work. It's not making every top ten list out there, which points to a smaller, more niche audience, but the people playing it seem genuinely into what it's doing.

How we ranked them

We pulled together critic reviews, Steam player counts, forum threads and release-day buzz to see which October 2026 games actually have people talking, not just which ones have the biggest marketing budget. Review scores mattered, but so did real engagement: concurrent player counts, how often a game showed up across multiple independent top-ten lists, and whether critics and fans actually agreed or were split. Where the community is divided, like with AION 2's player numbers versus its review scores, we said so instead of pretending there's a clean consensus.

FAQ

What is the biggest video game release of October 2026?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is the biggest by marketing and sales expectations, but Gears of War: E-Day and Star Wars: Galactic Racer are getting stronger critical buzz and consistently rank higher on fan and critic lists.

Is AION 2 worth playing despite mixed reviews?

It depends what you want. AION 2 is pulling massive player numbers, peaking around 400,000 concurrent players on Steam, with praise for its world and flight combat. But review scores sit around 59% positive, with complaints about monetization and mobile-style systems.

Is Kingdom Hearts Collection [I-III] new content?

No, it's a remaster collection bringing Kingdom Hearts I through III to Switch 2 on October 8. It's a great way to catch up or go portable, but it's not a new story.

Why is October 2026 such a packed month for games?

A wave of Switch 2 launch titles hitting October 1, plus major franchise releases like Gears of War, Call of Duty and Kingdom Hearts all landing in the same few weeks, is why fans are calling it 'Broktober.'
