Metaphor ReFantazio vs Other JRPGs: 2026 Tier List

Metaphor: ReFantazio just landed on Switch 2 (November 12), and that's reason enough to settle the bigger argument: where does it actually sit among the genre's best? We've pulled together 25 JRPGs, from the brand-new to the untouchable classics, and ranked them based on what critics scored, what players actually finished, and what keeps coming up in forum arguments at 2am.

This isn't a victory lap for any one studio. Atlus, Square Enix, Game Freak's spiritual cousins, Sandfall, Falcom, they're all here. Some placements will annoy you. Good. Tell us where we got it wrong.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Cover: Wikipedia

1 Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

The newcomer that actually did it, dethroned Metaphor in fresh 2026 rankings and walked away with GOTY nods from multiple outlets. Sandfall's turn-based/action hybrid feels like nothing else on this list, and the Gommage clock mechanic alone makes every other turn-based system here look a little old-fashioned. If you haven't played it yet, that's on you at this point.

About Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

A turn-based RPG from French developer Sandfall Interactive, blending classic JRPG combat with real-time parry mechanics. Set in a painterly, Belle Epoque-inspired world.

2 Metaphor: ReFantazio

94 on Metacritic from critics, 81% from players, and that gap tells the whole story. The Archetype system and Press Turn combat are Atlus at their most refined, but refined isn't the same as new, and the back half drags like it's padding out a word count. Companions are noble to a fault, people miss having a party member who's just kind of a jerk sometimes. Still, the Switch 2 launch proves turn-based JRPGs can be a system-seller in 2026.

Persona 5 Royal

3 Persona 5 Royal

Every single ranking we looked at calls this the entry point for newcomers, and they're right. The Phantom Thieves are more fun to hang out with than almost anyone else on this list, full stop. If Metaphor is the mature older sibling, Royal is still the one you actually want to grab a coffee with.

About Persona 5 Royal

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

4. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Massive, gorgeous, occasionally overstuffed with minigames you didn't ask for. It's dragging mainline Final Fantasy's reputation back into the conversation against Atlus and indie upstarts, and mostly winning that fight. Scores hover around the low 90s, but the sheer scale of Gaia on display here is hard to argue with.

Dragon Quest XI S
Cover: Wikipedia

5. Dragon Quest XI S

Shows up on nearly every top-25 list for a reason: it's the platonic ideal of a Dragon Quest game, warm, generous, and never pretending to be anything it's not. No twist endings, no moral ambiguity, just a hero's journey done right.

About Dragon Quest XI S

The definitive edition of Dragon Quest XI, a traditional hero's-journey JRPG from Square Enix with character design by Akira Toriyama. Praised for its warmth and classic structure.

Chrono Trigger

6. Chrono Trigger

Still the nostalgia pick that nobody argues with. Three decades on, the time-travel structure and multiple endings remain more ambitious than half the games released this year. It earns its spot on pure design, not just sentiment.

Regarded as one of the best-designed JRPGs ever made.

7. Final Fantasy VI

The opera scene alone has outlived entire studios. Kefka remains one of the only villains on this list who actually wins for a while, and that willingness to let the world burn is still startling decades later.

About Final Fantasy VI

A 1994 SNES classic following an ensemble cast against the villain Kefka in a world that literally gets destroyed partway through. Known for its opera scene and large cast of playable characters.

Persona 3 Reload

8. Persona 3 Reload

Consistently the 'most recommended' pick for players looking for a second Persona after Royal, and the remake's combat updates make the original's slower pace feel brand new. The Dark Hour hits different when the visuals actually match the mood this game is going for.

About Persona 3 Reload

A full remake of 2006's Persona 3, rebuilding the original's Dark Hour story with modern combat and visuals. Frequently recommended as a strong second Persona game after Royal.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
Cover: Wikipedia

9. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth

Ichiban's second outing takes the RPG systems from Yakuza: Like a Dragon and refines them into something genuinely excellent, with a battle system that finally feels tactically deep instead of just charming. Hawaii adds a second city that rivals Kamurocho in density and side content, and the main story balances the series' trademark absurd comedy with some of its most emotionally devastating moments yet. It lands just outside the top tier of pure JRPG mechanics but ahead of most turn based classics for sheer scope and heart.

About Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth

A JRPG entry in the Like a Dragon (Yakuza) series developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, continuing the turn-based combat style introduced in Like a Dragon: Yakuza. The story follows Ichiban Kasuga and returning protagonist Kazuma Kiryu across locations in Japan and Hawaii.

10. Xenoblade Chronicles 2

NieR Automata

11. NieR Automata

Technically more action than turn-based, but no JRPG list is honest without 2B, 9S, and a story that gets more devastating on each of its multiple playthroughs. Yoko Taro built something here that still feels unlike anything else.

Solid, pretty, a little safe. It's the game people point to when they complain modern JRPGs aren't taking enough risks, even though the combat itself is genuinely sharp.

14. Octopath Traveler II

The HD-2D style keeps proving itself game after game, and the Day/Night mechanic gives this sequel more texture than the original had. Eight separate stories is still a lot to ask players to care about equally, though.

18. Final Fantasy XVI

The most contested entry on this entire list: some don't even count it as a JRPG anymore given how action-focused and customization-light it is. Great spectacle, Ifrit vs Titan is a genuine highlight, but the genre-identity debate isn't going away.

About Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land

How we ranked them

We weighed critic scores against player sentiment (the Metacritic gap between the two tells its own story for a few of these), how often each game shows up across other major rankings, and how these games actually hold up in forum debates months or years after launch. Nostalgia counts for something, but it doesn't override design. Where fans are genuinely split, like Xenoblade Chronicles 2 or Final Fantasy XVI's JRPG status, we picked a side and said so.
