Game of the Year Winners Tier List, Ranked

The Game Awards (and its predecessors) have crowned a lot of GOTY winners over the years, and not all crowns age the same way. Some of these games are still being played and dissected years later. Others won in a weaker field and quietly faded from the conversation.

We picked twelve notable winners and ranked them from genre-defining to "fine, but did it really need to win?" This reflects the general consensus from fan forums, critic reviews and years of post-award arguments, with our own opinions mixed in where the discourse gets heated. Disagree? That's half the fun of a tier list. Make your own.

Baldur's Gate 3
Cover: Wikipedia

Baldur's Gate 3

A party-based RPG that lets you seduce a druid, argue with a sentient sword, and solve problems by turning into a bear, and somehow it also has a combat system deep enough to satisfy D&D nerds. The sheer density of reactivity, every companion has an arc, every choice branches somewhere, is why people are still finding new stuff in it years later. Pretty much nobody disputes this win.

About Baldur's Gate 3

A party-based RPG from Larian Studios set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Known for its depth of choice, reactivity and companion writing.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Dropped you on a cliff with a paraglider and said "go wherever," and the entire open-world genre has been chasing that feeling since. Chemistry-based physics puzzles, shrines you can solve five different ways, a map with almost no hand-holding. It redefined what Zelda could be, and arguably what open-world games could be, period.

About The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

An open-world action-adventure game from Nintendo that reinvented the long-running Zelda franchise. Known for its physics-based puzzles and freeform exploration.

Elden Ring

Elden Ring

FromSoftware took the Dark Souls formula and cracked it open into a genuinely explorable world, and the result is one of the few open-world games where getting lost feels like the reward. Malenia is still a sore spot in some circles, but nobody seriously argues against this one taking the crown.

About Elden Ring

An open-world action RPG from FromSoftware made in collaboration with writer George R.R. Martin. Combines Souls-style combat with expansive open-world exploration.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Bloody Baron questline alone has more emotional weight than most entire games manage. CD Projekt Red built a world where side quests routinely out-write the main story, and years of expansions and a Netflix show haven't dimmed how good Geralt's last big outing still feels.

About The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

An open-world action RPG by CD Projekt Red following monster hunter Geralt of Rivia. Widely praised for its writing, side quests and expansions.

God of War (2018)
Cover: Wikipedia

God of War (2018)

Swapping Kratos's blades for an axe and giving him an actual kid to talk to turned a button-mashing franchise into something with real stakes. The single-take camera trick gets less attention now, but it was a genuine swing, and Mimir's running commentary still holds up as some of the best writing in the series.

About God of War (2018)

A reboot of Sony's God of War series, following an older Kratos and his son Atreus through Norse mythology. Praised for its continuous single-take camera and story.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

No stamina bar to hide behind, no build to grind your way past a hard fight, just you, a prosthetic arm full of gadgets, and a posture meter that punishes cowardice. Genichiro and the Owl fights are some of the tightest sword duels in any action game, and the deflect-everything combat system is the best thing FromSoftware has designed.

About Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

An action game from FromSoftware focused on precision sword combat and a posture-based deflection system. Set in a fictionalized Sengoku-era Japan.

Astro Bot

Astro Bot

A pure, joyful platformer that treats the DualSense like a toy box instead of a gimmick, every level finds some new trick with the controller's haptics or speaker. It's the rare mascot platformer that feels essential rather than nostalgic, and it won over people who hadn't thought about platformers in years.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

A turn-based RPG with real-time dodge and parry mechanics that actually make old-school combat feel tense again, wrapped in a Belle Epoque art style nobody saw coming from a small studio.

About Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

A turn-based RPG from French developer Sandfall Interactive, blending classic JRPG combat with real-time parry mechanics. Set in a painterly, Belle Epoque-inspired world.

The Last of Us Part II
Cover: Wikipedia

The Last of Us Part II

This is the one people still fight about at parties. The structural gut-punch of making you play as Abby, right after she kills a character you love, is either the boldest narrative swing of the decade or a miscalculation, depending who you ask. The moment-to-moment gameplay and sound design are untouchable either way.

About The Last of Us Part II

A story-driven action game from Naughty Dog and sequel to The Last of Us. Notable for its divisive narrative structure and technical polish.

It Takes Two
Cover: Wikipedia

It Takes Two

A co-op platformer so packed with ideas, magnet mechanics, bee-riding, musical instrument boss fights, that it feels like three games' worth of content stapled together. It's not flashy or prestige-y, which is probably why some critics underrate it, but ask anyone who's actually played it with a partner.

About It Takes Two

A co-operative platformer from Hazelight Studios built entirely around two-player gameplay. Follows a couple shrunk down and turned into dolls.

CC Tier: Good wins, aged unevenly

Dragon Age: Inquisition
Cover: Wikipedia

Dragon Age: Inquisition

The Hinterlands opening hours are a notorious slog, all fetch quests and checklist busywork, before the game actually finds its footing. Once it does, the companion writing and the Trespasser DLC payoff are genuinely strong, but a lot of fans feel this win says more about a weak year than about Inquisition's own highs.

About Dragon Age: Inquisition

A fantasy RPG developed by BioWare and released in 2014, the third entry in the Dragon Age series. Known for its companion-driven storytelling and sprawling open regions.

DD Tier: Fans still argue about this one

Overwatch
Cover: Wikipedia

Overwatch

A genuinely sharp hero shooter with some of the best character design Blizzard's ever done, but in hindsight this win feels more like a reward for cultural momentum than for the game itself. It was never quite the systems-deep, replay-forever title some of its GOTY company was, and its legacy is complicated by what came after.

About Overwatch

A team-based hero shooter from Blizzard Entertainment, built around distinct character abilities and objective-based modes. Helped popularize the modern hero shooter genre.

How we ranked them

We weighed critical reception at launch against how each game has actually held up: does it still get recommended, modded, replayed and argued about years later? We also factored in genuine influence on the industry, how divisive the choice was at the time, and whether the win feels justified in hindsight versus "it was just that year's biggest title." Consensus from fan communities and critic retrospectives mattered more than our personal taste, though we didn't hide our opinions where fans are split.

FAQ

What counts as a "Game of the Year" in this list?

These are games that won a major Game of the Year award, most from The Game Awards, though some predate it. We picked twelve notable, widely discussed winners rather than every winner ever.

Which Game of the Year winner is the most overrated?

Fan consensus points most often at Overwatch. It's a well-made hero shooter, but many feel its win reflected hype and momentum more than lasting depth compared to other winners.

Which GOTY winner holds up the best years later?

Breath of the Wild and Elden Ring are the two most commonly cited as still feeling essential, both for how they reshaped open-world design industry-wide.

Is The Last of Us Part II really that divisive?

Yes. Its story choices split players hard at launch and still do. Almost everyone agrees the gameplay and production are excellent, the disagreement is about the narrative structure.

Why is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 ranked lower than some older titles?

It's not lower because it's worse, it's simply newer, with less time for long-term consensus to settle. Early reaction has been extremely strong.
