Tekken Characters Tier List: Ranking the Roster
Tekken has one of the deepest rosters in fighting games, but some characters just hit different. We're ranking twelve of the series' most recognizable fighters based on story importance, how much they define the franchise, and how they're remembered by the people who've been mashing buttons since the arcade days.
This list leans on what fans and critics tend to agree on across forums and reviews, with our own take added where the debates get heated (and in the Mishima family, they always do). Think we got the family drama wrong? Make your own list.

Kazuya Mishima
The Devil Gene made flesh. Kazuya is the reason the whole Mishima bloodline soap opera exists, and his rivalry with his own son carries half the series' story beats. His moveset, built around the Electric Wind God Fist, is one of the most respected in fighting game history for how unforgiving it is to execute well.
About Kazuya Mishima
A central antagonist and anti-hero of the Tekken series, Kazuya is the son of Heihachi and wielder of the Devil Gene. He first appeared in the original Tekken game in 1994.
- First appearance
- Tekken (1994)
- Fighting style
- Mishima-style Karate

Heihachi Mishima
You can't talk Tekken without talking about the old man who throws his own son off a cliff in the opening cinematic. Heihachi is the franchise's original villain and its emotional center of gravity, even decades later. Few fighting game characters have a death scene fans argue about as much as his.
About Heihachi Mishima
The patriarch of the Mishima family and one of Tekken's original antagonists, Heihachi has been a fixture of the series since the first game. His rivalry and violent history with his son Kazuya drives much of the early storyline.
- First appearance
- Tekken (1994)
- Fighting style
- Mishima-style Karate

Jin Kazama
Jin's been the protagonist since Tekken 3 and carries the weight of being torn between his father's demons and his grandfather's legacy. Some fans find his constant brooding exhausting by this point, but there's no denying his fighting style, a mix of Karate and Mishima-style moves, is one of the most versatile in the game.
About Jin Kazama
The son of Kazuya and grandson of Heihachi, Jin has served as the series' protagonist since Tekken 3. He struggles with inheriting the Devil Gene from his father's bloodline.
- First appearance
- Tekken 3
- Fighting style
- Karate / Mishima hybrid

Nina Williams
The assassin who's been in every single Tekken game, which is more than most of the Mishimas can say. Nina's fighting style combines Aikido, Hapkido, and Koppojutsu and is fast and deadly, and she has an unstable and often violent relationship with her sister Anna throughout the series.. She's basically Tekken's answer to a Bond character.
About Nina Williams
An Irish assassin who has appeared in every mainline Tekken title, Nina is known for her precise Aikido-based combat style. She's long been caught in a rivalry with her sister Anna.
- First appearance
- Tekken (1994)
- Fighting style
- Aikido / Assassination arts

King
A luchador who fights crime by day and other wrestlers by night, King's grappling game is beloved by players who like to mix throws into their combo strings. The mask-passing tradition between King I and King II adds a weirdly touching layer of legacy to a guy who otherwise looks like he wandered in from a jaguar sanctuary.
About King
A masked wrestler who fights to support an orphanage, King uses a grappling-heavy style inspired by professional wrestling and jaguars. The identity has been passed between two characters, King I and King II, across the series.
- First appearance
- Tekken (1994)
- Fighting style
- Wrestling / Pankration

Ling Xiaoyu
Xiaoyu brings a lighter tone to a roster full of family trauma, and her acrobatic, unpredictable style (borrowing from Hakkyokuken) makes her a favorite for players who want to dodge and weave rather than trade blows. She's also tangled up with Jin in one of the series' more low-key relationship arcs.
About Ling Xiaoyu
A Chinese student with an acrobatic fighting style, Xiaoyu is known for her ties to the Mishima Zaibatsu and her relationship with Jin. She uses a style based on Hakkyokuken.
- First appearance
- Tekken 3
- Fighting style
- Hakkyokuken (Baguazhang/Piguaquan blend)

Lars Alexandersson
Introduced in Tekken 6 as a Mishima-adjacent character with his own army and his own grudge, Lars brought a fast, military-inspired style that felt different from the old guard. He's grown into a reliable fixture of the story without ever quite reaching the star power of the family he's tangled up with.
About Lars Alexandersson
A former Tekken Force commander and illegitimate son of Heihachi, Lars debuted in Tekken 6 leading a rebellion against the Mishima Zaibatsu. His fighting style blends military discipline with fast strikes.
- First appearance
- Tekken 6
- Fighting style
- Original military-style martial arts

Julia Chang
The archaeologist fighting to protect the environment, Julia inherited Michelle Chang's fighting style and has quietly stuck around the roster for years. She doesn't get the spotlight moments the Mishimas do, but her combo potential keeps her a solid pick for players who want substance over flash.
About Julia Chang
An archaeologist and environmental advocate, Julia inherited her fighting style from her adoptive mother Michelle Chang. She's been a recurring fixture of the roster since her debut.
- First appearance
- Tekken 3
- Fighting style
- Chinese Kenpo

Eddy Gordo
Capoeira in a fighting game sounds like a gimmick until you actually play against someone who knows the low-sweep strings. Eddy was a breakout favorite in the PS1 era for bringing a completely different visual rhythm to the fights, even if the character writing around him has always been thin.
About Eddy Gordo
A Brazilian Capoeira fighter who joined the roster seeking revenge for his father's imprisonment. Eddy became an iconic face of the series for popularizing Capoeira in fighting games.
- First appearance
- Tekken 3
- Fighting style
- Capoeira
CC Tier

Christie Monteiro
Christie shares Eddy's Capoeira style, which makes her fun to play but a little redundant on a roster this size. She's got charm and a loyal niche fanbase, but she's never been given a story arc with real teeth, which keeps her from climbing higher.
About Christie Monteiro
A Brazilian Capoeira practitioner and student of Eddy Gordo, Christie joined the series as a younger counterpart sharing his fighting style. She's known for her close ties to Eddy's storyline.
- First appearance
- Tekken 4
- Fighting style
- Capoeira

Anna Williams
Nina's sister and eternal rival, Anna is basically defined by that one relationship rather than anything of her own. Her moveset is solid Aikido-adjacent work, but she's spent more game time as a plot device for the Williams sisters feud than as her own character.
About Anna Williams
Nina Williams' younger sister and longtime rival, Anna has appeared across multiple Tekken titles pursuing her own agenda, often tied to the Mishima family. She shares an Aikido-adjacent combat background with Nina.
- First appearance
- Tekken 2
- Fighting style
- Aikido-based

Leo
Leo's Bajiquan style is sharp and the ambiguous character design got attention when they debuted in Tekken 6, but the story has never quite figured out what to do with them. Solid in a fight, forgettable in the cutscenes, which sums up a lot of the series' supporting cast.
About Leo
A German martial artist whose gender has been left deliberately ambiguous by the developers, Leo debuted in Tekken 6. They use a sharp, linear fighting style called Bajiquan.
- First appearance
- Tekken 6
- Fighting style
- Bajiquan
How we ranked them
We weighed story significance (who actually drives the plot), cultural impact (who ended up on T-shirts and in other games), gameplay identity (how distinct and beloved their moveset is), and longevity (how well they've aged across numbered entries). A character can rank high on legacy even if they're not everyone's favorite to play, and vice versa.
