MMORPGs Tier List: Every Major MMO Ranked

Twenty-three worlds, thousands of hours of grinding, and a lot of strong opinions. We pulled together what fans and critics actually say across forums, reviews and years of discourse to rank the MMORPGs that mattered (and a few that still do).

This covers the genre's biggest names, the cult favorites that refuse to die, and a couple of cautionary tales. Some of these you've sunk years into. Some you tried once during a free trial weekend and never opened again. Disagree with where we put yours? That's half the fun of a list like this. Make your own.

World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft

Still the reference point every other MMO gets measured against, for better or worse. Raiding guilds, server communities, the Dark Portal, two decades of expansions, love it or hate it, you can't talk about this genre without starting here.

About World of Warcraft

Blizzard's fantasy MMO set in the Warcraft universe, running continuously since its 2004 launch. Known for its raid content, expansion cycle, and massive cultural footprint.

Released
2004
Developer

Final Fantasy XIV

Final Fantasy XIV

Went from a notorious launch disaster to arguably the best-written MMO ever made. The Shadowbringers story alone converted a generation of players who swore they hated MMOs, and the job system design is endlessly copied.

About Final Fantasy XIV

A Square Enix MMO that relaunched in 2013 as A Realm Reborn after its disastrous original 2010 version. Praised for its story-driven expansions like Heavensward and Shadowbringers.

Guild Wars 2
Cover: Wikipedia

Guild Wars 2

No subscription, no trinity-locked combat, and dynamic events that actually pull strangers together instead of making them queue separately. The living world story model has its detractors, but the core gameplay still feels fresh years later.

About Guild Wars 2

ArenaNet's buy-to-play MMO known for its dynamic event system and action-oriented combat without a dedicated healer role.

EverQuest

EverQuest

The game that proved 3D persistent worlds could work at scale, and the one that invented half the pain points (and joys) players still argue about today, like corpse runs and brutal death penalties. Everything after owes it something.

About EverQuest

One of the foundational 3D MMORPGs, launched in 1999 and still running with regular expansions for its dedicated community.

EVE Online

Not really a fantasy MMO at all, it's a spreadsheet-powered space opera where player-run alliances fight wars that make the news. The learning cliff is real, but nothing else lets a single battle cost real-world thousands of dollars.

About EVE Online

A sandbox space MMO known for player-driven economy, large-scale fleet battles, and permadeath consequences for losing ships.

2003

The Elder Scrolls Online

The Elder Scrolls Online

Started shaky as a weird theme-park take on a sandbox franchise, then quietly became one of the most content-rich MMOs going, chapter after chapter. The one-tamriel overhaul fixed the leveling problem that doomed its early reputation.

About The Elder Scrolls Online

A multiplayer entry in Bethesda's Elder Scrolls series, set centuries before Skyrim. Known for its chapter-based expansion model and flexible class system.

Albion Online

Albion Online

A full-loot sandbox that doesn't apologize for being brutal, with a player-driven economy where literally everything you wear was crafted by someone. It's niche, but the people who love it really love it.

About Albion Online

A cross-platform sandbox MMO with a full-loot economy where all gear is player-crafted.

BB Tier: Solid, with a fanbase that knows exactly why

The Lord of the Rings Online
Cover: Wikipedia

The Lord of the Rings Online

Walking through Moria or the Shire still hits for anyone who loves the books, and the music system remains a weirdly beloved feature. It's aged and the monetization got messy, but the zone design holds up.

About The Lord of the Rings Online

An MMO set in Tolkien's Middle-earth, following the story of the books and films through recreated locations like the Shire and Moria.

Star Wars: The Old Republic

Star Wars: The Old Republic

Bioware poured a reported fortune into fully voiced class stories, and for the Jedi Knight or Sith Warrior arcs it was worth it. The endgame and later expansions never matched that opening strength, though.

A Star Wars MMO built around fully voiced class storylines, set thousands of years before the films.

Ragnarok Online

A huge deal in the early 2000s, especially across Southeast Asia and Brazil, with a job class system that let you become a Whitesmith or an Assassin and actually feel different. Private servers kept the community alive long after official support faded in the West.

Ultima Online

Ultima Online

The granddaddy of the sandbox MMO, where full-loot PvP and player housing existed before most of the genre had even figured out combat. Rough by modern standards, but almost every sandbox idea traces back here.

Dungeons & Dragons Online

Dungeons & Dragons Online

Took actual D&D rules and turned dungeons into real action-oriented instances instead of open-world filler. Underrated for how much it respects the source material, even if the hub city, Stormreach, never got the love it deserved.

About Dungeons & Dragons Online

An MMO adaptation of tabletop D&D rules, built around instanced dungeon design rather than a fully open world.

Lost Ark

Aion
Cover: Wikipedia

Aion

Beautiful flight-combat gimmick and NCSoft production values couldn't save it from feeling like a generic theme park once the wings lost their novelty. Had a moment, then mostly faded outside dedicated regions.

About Aion

An NCSoft MMO notable for its flight-based combat system and conflict between angelic and demonic factions.

Blade & Soul
Cover: Wikipedia

Blade & Soul

Gorgeous martial-arts combat and a story mode that leaned hard into anime melodrama, but Western servers never shook the reputation for pay-to-win gear progression. The combat system deserved a better economy around it.

New World

New World

Launched to a massive player spike, then lost most of it within weeks as exploits, server queues, and balance patches piled up. Amazon kept patching it into something more respectable, but the damage to its reputation was already done.

Star Wars Galaxies
Cover: Wikipedia

Star Wars Galaxies

Beloved for its player-driven professions and genuinely unique sandbox systems, then gutted by the infamous Combat Upgrade and New Game Enhancements that alienated its own fanbase. Shut down in 2011, and still mourned harder than almost any MMO that's ever existed.

How we ranked them

We weighed longevity, community size, how often each game gets brought up as a genre highlight, and how it's held up against newer competition. We leaned on what players and critics broadly agree on, server populations, Steam reviews, forum sentiment over the years, but we also made calls where the community is split down the middle. A game can rank high for history even if its current state is rough, and vice versa.

FAQ

What is the most popular MMORPG right now?

World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV still draw the largest active communities, with Old School RuneScape close behind thanks to its huge, loyal player base.

What is considered the first true MMORPG?

Ultima Online (1997) is widely credited as the game that established the genre's core ideas, though Meridian 59 came slightly earlier and EverQuest later defined the 3D era.

Why did Star Wars Galaxies shut down?

LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment ended the servers in 2011 after years of declining population, a decline many fans trace back to the controversial New Game Enhancements update in 2005.

Is New World worth playing now?

It's in a much better state than its rocky 2021 launch, with more content and better balance, but it still hasn't fully shaken its reputation among players who left early.
