Kingdom Hearts Games Tier List: Every Entry Ranked
Disney characters, giant swords called keyblades, and a plot that got away from everybody years ago. That's Kingdom Hearts. We're ranking all 11 entries, mainline numbered games, spinoffs, the mobile stuff, even the rhythm game, from the ones you should drop everything to play to the ones only completionists need to bother with.
This reflects what fans argue about on forums and what critics said at launch, plus our own take when the community genuinely can't agree. And yes, people will disagree with us. Rank it yourself and tell us we're wrong.

SS Tier: The essentials

Kingdom Hearts II
The combat overhaul alone justifies the crown: reaction commands, drive forms, and Organization XIII fights that still get clipped and posted today. Twilight Town's slow-burn opening annoyed people in 2005 and is beloved now. This is the one people mean when they say Kingdom Hearts peaked early.

Kingdom Hearts χ
The original has rough platforming and a camera that fights you, but none of that matters once you're standing in Hollow Bastion with Sephiroth loading in. It set the template: Disney worlds, Final Fantasy cameos, a story about friendship that somehow also involves Nobodies and hearts. Still the most emotionally direct game in the series.
AA Tier: Excellent, no asterisks needed

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep
Three playable characters, three overlapping campaigns, and a final act that actually explains why half the cast is miserable in later games. The command deck system from this PSP game got folded into the main series afterward, that's how good it was. Terra's story alone is one of the saddest arcs in the franchise.

Kingdom Hearts III
Visually the best looking game Osaka's team has ever shipped, and the Pixar worlds (Toy Story, Monsters Inc) fit the tone better than you'd expect. The combat is flashier than ever with Attractions pulled straight from Disney theme park rides. Knocked down slightly for an ending that rushes through over a decade of setup in a few cutscenes.

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories
A card-based combat system on Game Boy Advance sounds like a demotion after the first game, and purists hated it at first. It isn't. The card mechanics force real strategic decisions, and Castle Oblivion's rewriting of memories is genuinely unsettling storytelling for a handheld spinoff. Essential if you want Roxas and Organization XIII to make sense later.
BB Tier: Great story, some friction

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
Roxas's entire tragic backstory happens here, and the multiplayer missions with a full roster of Organization members was a neat idea for a DS game. The mission-based structure gets repetitive fast though, and most fans experience this one through the HD cutscene movie instead of actually playing it. Still, skip the story and you're lost for two more games.

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance
Flowmotion is one of the best traversal systems the series ever built, swinging and wall-running through Disney worlds at ridiculous speed. The dual protagonist structure with Sora and Riku dropping in and out works better than it should. Drops you right into some of the densest lore dumps in the whole franchise though, which is a lot to ask of a 3DS game.
CC Tier: Fine, but optional

Kingdom Hearts Re:coded
A digitized Sora re-living the first game's events to recover a lost journal, which is about as filler as Kingdom Hearts filler gets. The combat has some fun data-world gimmicks, but almost nothing here matters to the overall plot beyond one closing scene. Most fans only know this one from its cutscenes.

Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory
A rhythm game covering the series' soundtrack is a nice victory lap, and the music (still some of the best game scores around) deserves the spotlight. But the rhythm gameplay itself is simple compared to genre leaders, and the story content added for series fans amounts to a handful of cutscenes bolted onto the end. Fun for an afternoon, forgettable after.
FF Tier: Only for completionists

Kingdom Hearts Dark Road
A mobile prequel focused on Xehanort's younger years that launched in June 2020 and was shut down in 2021. The story beats it delivers could've been a few minutes of exposition in a mainline game instead. Even dedicated lore hunters mostly experienced this through summary videos rather than the app itself.
How we ranked them
We weighed how each game plays today, not just how it was received at launch. Combat depth, story importance, and whether it still holds up on a modern replay all factored in. Spinoffs got judged partly on whether skipping them actually hurts your understanding of the story, since that's the real question fans ask before buying a handheld game from 2009.

Rank these yourselfFAQ
What is the best Kingdom Hearts game to start with?
Kingdom Hearts or Kingdom Hearts II, ideally through the HD remasters. They hold up best and set up everything that follows.
Do you need to play the spinoffs to understand the story?
Technically yes, especially 358/2 Days and Birth by Sleep. Most fans get through them via the cutscene movies included in the HD collections instead of playing the originals.
Is Kingdom Hearts χ still playable?
The mobile and browser versions have been shut down; its story content survives through an offline app with theater mode for Union X and playable story sections for Dark Road, as well as fan-made video compilations.
Why is Kingdom Hearts III ranked below Kingdom Hearts II?
III looks and plays great, but fans generally feel it rushes its ending after over a decade of buildup, while II is considered the series' peak for pacing and combat.
What's the worst Kingdom Hearts game?
By consensus, Dark Road, a mobile prequel that most fans never played directly and that delivers little beyond exposition you could get elsewhere.
