Halo Games Tier List: Every Entry Ranked
Halo has been running for over two decades now, and that means a lot of entries, a lot of spin-offs, and a lot of arguments about which ones actually hold up. We're covering the full mainline campaigns, the strategy spin-offs, the mobile detour, the remasters, and the collection that tried to house them all.
This ranking comes from where fans and critics broadly land after years of debate on forums, review scores, and community retrospectives, with our own take added where the arguments never really settled. Feel free to disagree, that's half the fun of a franchise this argued-over.

SS Tier: The ones that defined the franchise

Halo 2
The jump to Xbox Live multiplayer alone changed console gaming. Dual-wielding, the Arbiter storyline, and that cliffhanger ending made this the game people stayed up until midnight for, and the one that turned Halo into a cultural event rather than just a good shooter.
About Halo 2
The 2004 sequel that brought the Arbiter into the story and pushed Xbox Live multiplayer into the mainstream. Still one of the most-cited entries when fans discuss the franchise's peak.
- Developer
- Bungie
- Released
- 2004
- Platform
- Xbox

Halo: Combat Evolved
The one that started it all and still plays better than it has any right to. The Silent Cartographer and the Warthog runs set the template for what an FPS campaign could feel like, and it did it on a console when everyone said shooters belonged on PC.
About Halo: Combat Evolved
The 2001 launch title that helped sell the original Xbox and redefined console shooters. Developed by Bungie, it introduced Master Chief, the Covenant, and the Halo ringworld itself.
- Developer
- Bungie
- Released
- 2001
- Platform
- Xbox

Halo 3
Finished the fight and then some. Forge mode alone kept this game alive for years after launch, letting players build and share custom maps long before that was standard, and the campaign's final stretch still gets brought up in "best Halo moments" lists.
About Halo 3
The 2007 conclusion to the original trilogy, closing out the fight against the Covenant and the Flood. Introduced Forge, the custom map editor that fueled years of community content.

- Bungie
- Released
- 2007
- Platform
- Xbox 360
AA Tier: Excellent, just short of legendary

Halo: Reach
A prequel that knew it was telling a tragedy and leaned into it. Noble Team's fate was never in doubt, which somehow made every mission hit harder, and the multiplayer customization options were ahead of their time.
About Halo: Reach
Bungie's final Halo game, a prequel depicting the fall of planet Reach before the events of Combat Evolved. Praised for its character customization and somber tone.
- Developer
- Bungie
- Released
- 2010
- Platform
- Xbox 360

Halo 3: ODST
Smaller in scope but richer in atmosphere. Wandering a rain-soaked, empty New Mombasa at night as the Rookie, with that jazzy radio soundtrack, is a mood Halo never really repeated, and Firefight mode was a genuine gift to the fanbase.
About Halo 3: ODST
A standalone story set during the Battle of New Mombasa, following the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers instead of Master Chief. Known for its noir atmosphere and the Firefight survival mode.
- Developer
- Bungie
- Released
- 2009
- Platform
- Xbox 360

Halo: The Master Chief Collection
Rough at launch, genuinely great now. Years of patches turned this into the definitive way to play the mainline campaigns and their multiplayer on one platform, with cross-play and a mountain of maps that keeps growing.
About Halo: The Master Chief Collection
A compilation bundling the mainline campaigns and their multiplayer into one package, originally released for Xbox One and later expanded to PC.
- Developer
- 343 Industries
- Released
- 2014
- Platform
- Xbox One, PC
BB Tier: Solid, with real fans

Halo 4
343 Industries' first swing landed closer than people give it credit for. The Chief and Cortana's relationship carried real emotional weight, even if the Prometheans and the new multiplayer systems split the community down the middle.
About Halo 4
The first mainline Halo built by 343 Industries after taking over the franchise from Bungie. Introduced the Prometheans and continued the story of Chief and Cortana.
- Developer
- 343 Industries
- Released
- 2012
- Platform
- Xbox 360

Halo Wars
Console RTS was supposed to be a bad idea, and Ensemble Studios made it work anyway. The campaign gave the Spartans and the UNSC some actual strategic stakes, and the controls translated surprisingly well to a gamepad.
About Halo Wars
A real-time strategy spin-off developed by Ensemble Studios, set before the original trilogy. Built specifically for controller play on Xbox 360.
- Developer
- Ensemble Studios
- Released
- 2009
- Platform
- Xbox 360

Halo Wars 2
A sequel that refined the formula without reinventing it. Blitz mode was a clever card-based twist on skirmish play, and the Banished made their debut here as one of the better new factions the series has added in years.
About Halo Wars 2
The sequel to the original RTS spin-off, continuing the story of the Spirit of Fire crew and introducing the Banished faction led by Atriox.
- Developer
- 343 Industries, Creative Assembly
- Released
- 2017
- Platform
- Xbox One, PC

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
A loving remaster that let you flip between the new visuals and the original graphics with one button, which turned out to be one of the best gimmicks any remaster has done. The core game underneath is still the same classic, for better and worse.
About Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
A remaster of the original game for its 10th anniversary, with overhauled graphics that could be toggled against the original visuals in real time.
- Developer
- 343 Industries
- Released
- 2011
- Platform
- Xbox 360
CC Tier: Fine, but flawed

Halo Infinite
The open-world campaign and free-to-play multiplayer showed real promise, and the Zeta Halo setting is gorgeous, but a troubled launch, missing modes, and a slow content drip left a lot of fans feeling like the full vision never arrived.
About Halo Infinite
The most recent mainline entry, featuring an open-world campaign on a fractured Zeta Halo and a free-to-play multiplayer mode.
- Developer
- 343 Industries
- Released
- 2021
- Platform
- Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC

Halo 5: Guardians
Marketed around Master Chief, delivered mostly Locke, and fans never fully forgave the bait and switch. The gunplay and Warzone multiplayer are genuinely strong, but the campaign's structure and story choices are where most of the complaints land.
About Halo 5: Guardians
A 2015 entry centered on the hunt for Master Chief, told largely from the perspective of Spartan Locke's fireteam. Introduced the Warzone multiplayer mode.
- Developer
- 343 Industries
- Released
- 2015
- Platform
- Xbox One
DD Tier: Only for the die-hards

Halo: Spartan Assault
A top-down twin-stick shooter built for tablets and phones, and it feels exactly like that. Fine for a quick mobile session, but it's a minor detour that most of the fanbase has quietly forgotten.
About Halo: Spartan Assault
A top-down twin-stick shooter spin-off built for Windows 8 and mobile devices, bridging the story between Halo 3 and Halo 4.
- Developer
- 343 Industries
- Released
- 2013
- Platform
- Windows, mobile
FF Tier: Best left in the past

Halo: Campaign Evolved
Until there's more to actually judge, it sits at the bottom by default.
About Halo: Campaign Evolved
A lesser-known entry in the Halo lineup with limited public information available.
How we ranked them
We weighed campaign quality, multiplayer longevity, how well each game aged, and its actual impact on the series and on shooters generally. Technical state at launch counted too, since a few of these games were judged as much by their bugs as by their design. Spin-offs and remasters are measured against what they were trying to be, not against the mainline trilogy.

Rank these yourselfFAQ
What is the best Halo game of all time?
Most fans and critics point to Halo 2 or Halo 3 as the peak of the series, thanks to their multiplayer innovation and campaign moments, though the original Combat Evolved still has a strong claim as the one that started everything.
Is Halo: The Master Chief Collection worth buying now?
Yes. It launched with major technical problems, but years of updates have turned it into the best way to play nearly every mainline Halo campaign and multiplayer mode in one package.
Why do fans dislike Halo 5: Guardians?
The marketing promised a Master Chief story and the campaign largely followed Spartan Locke instead, which left a lot of players feeling misled regardless of how the actual gameplay held up.
Are the Halo Wars games worth playing if you don't like strategy games?
They're approachable even for RTS newcomers since both were built from the ground up for controllers, with simplified base building and unit control compared to PC strategy games.
What is Halo: Spartan Assault?
A top-down twin-stick shooter spin-off originally built for mobile and Windows devices, set between the events of Halo 3 and Halo 4.
