Countries to Visit: The Ultimate Travel Tier List
We put 26 countries that show up on every "best places to travel" list and ranked them the way frequent travelers actually talk about them over drinks. This isn't about GDP or flight connections, it's about whether a place genuinely earns a spot on your list and delivers once you get there.
Some of these are obvious, some will start arguments. That's the point. Scroll down, see where your favorite landed, and feel free to tell us we got it wrong.

How we ranked them
We weighed how much a country rewards the effort of getting there: the food, the landscapes, the culture, the ease of travel, and the "did that really just happen" factor of being on the ground. We leaned on what travelers, forums and critics consistently say when they compare notes, then made a call ourselves wherever the consensus splits, which happens more than you'd think with a list like this.

Rank these yourselfFAQ
What's the best country to visit for first-time international travelers?
Italy, Portugal or Costa Rica are good starting points: easy to navigate, forgiving for mistakes, and packed with obvious highlights.
Which country on this list is the most underrated?
Mexico and South Korea get mentioned the most as countries people assume they've already 'seen' through stereotypes, then get surprised by in person.
Why isn't Brazil or India ranked higher given their attractions?
Both have genuinely world-class sights, but safety concerns and the difficulty of travel logistics are real factors that come up constantly in traveler discussions, which is why they land lower despite the highlights.
Is this ranking based on cost or luxury?
No. A country like Iceland or Norway ranks high despite being expensive, because the experience itself is what we're ranking, not value for money.
Do fans and critics agree on this list?
Mostly, especially at the top. The biggest disagreements are around France, Morocco and India, where strong opinions go both ways.
