Pac-12 Schools Tier List: Ranking the Old Conference
The Pac-12 as we knew it is gone, scattered across the Big Ten, Big 12, and ACC, but the rivalries and reputations still linger. We're ranking all 12 of the old guard on the full package: football and basketball tradition, campus culture, academics, location, and that intangible sense of "this school actually matters on a national stage."
This is our take, built on what fans, alumni, and sportswriters have argued about for years on message boards and in bar debates. Some of this is obvious. Some of it you'll want to fight us on. Good. Rank it yourself and see where you land.

SS Tier: The Conference's Crown Jewels

USC
Hollywood's team, and the closest thing the old Pac-12 had to a blue blood. The Trojans have the Heisman winners, the national titles, and the recruiting pipeline that made the rest of the conference nervous every February. Leaving for the Big Ten barely dented the brand.
About USC
The University of Southern California, a private university in Los Angeles, is known for its football tradition, Hollywood ties, and the Trojan Marching Band. It moved to the Big Ten in 2024.
- Location
- Los Angeles, CA
- Type
- Private
- Mascot
- Trojans

Oregon
Nobody in the conference did more with momentum and marketing than Oregon. Phil Knight's money turned a mid-tier program into a uniform-changing, playoff-chasing machine, and Autzen Stadium is as loud as any stadium west of the Mississippi. The football results back it up too.
About Oregon
The University of Oregon in Eugene built one of college football's most recognizable modern brands, boosted heavily by Nike co-founder Phil Knight. It joined the Big Ten in 2024.
- Location
- Eugene, OR
- Type
- Public
- Mascot
- Ducks

UCLA
The basketball pedigree alone (those Wooden-era banners) puts UCLA in rarefied air, and the Westwood campus and Los Angeles pull keep it a national name even in down football years. Few athletic departments can claim this many sports being genuinely good at once.
About UCLA
The University of California, Los Angeles is renowned for its historic basketball dynasty under John Wooden and its broad athletic success across many sports. It also moved to the Big Ten in 2024.
- Location
- Los Angeles, CA
- Type
- Public

AA Tier: Big Time Programs

Stanford
Say what you want about recent football struggles, Stanford's overall athletic department is absurd: Olympic sports titles, a Directors' Cup habit, and a football program that was genuinely elite under Jim Harbaugh and David Shaw. Pair that with the academics and it's the total package, just not quite S-tier on football alone anymore.
About Stanford
Stanford University, a private research university in the Bay Area, is known for combining elite academics with one of the most decorated Olympic-sport athletic programs in the country. It joined the ACC in 2024.
- Location
- Stanford, CA
- Type
- Private

Washington
Husky Stadium with the lake views is one of the best gameday settings in the country, and Washington's football history includes a national title and multiple Rose Bowl runs. The program's late-2010s and 2023 title game run under Kalen DeBoer reminded everyone it can still play with anybody.
About Washington
The University of Washington in Seattle features Husky Stadium, known for its lakeside views, and a football program with a national championship in its history. It joined the Big Ten in 2024.
- Location
- Seattle, WA
- Type
- Public
- Mascot
- Huskies

Arizona State
Tempe is a party school reputation wrapped around genuinely solid athletics, and the Sun Devils have quietly built one of the biggest overall enrollments and fan bases in the group. Bobby Hurley's basketball revival and a football program trying to climb back keep this one interesting.
About Arizona State
Arizona State University in Tempe is one of the largest universities in the country by enrollment, with a growing athletic profile in football and basketball. It joined the Big 12 in 2024.
- Location
- Tempe, AZ
- Type
- Public
- Mascot
- Sun Devils
BB Tier: Solid and Respected

Colorado
A sleepy program for over a decade until Deion Sanders showed up and made Boulder the most talked-about campus in college football overnight. The Buffaloes' actual results are still a work in progress, but the attention and Folsom Field scenery push them into the middle tier fairly.
About Colorado
The University of Colorado Boulder plays its football at Folsom Field and drew national attention after hiring Deion Sanders as head coach in 2023. It joined the Big 12 in 2024.
- Location
- Boulder, CO
- Type
- Public
- Mascot
- Buffaloes

Utah
Late arrival to the Pac-12 party but arguably outperformed half the schools that were there longer, with multiple conference titles and a physical, no-nonsense brand under Kyle Whittingham. Salt Lake City isn't a glamour market, but Rice-Eccles Stadium gets loud.
About Utah
The University of Utah in Salt Lake City joined the Pac-12 in 2011 and became one of its most consistent football programs under longtime coach Kyle Whittingham. It joined the Big 12 in 2024.
- Location
- Salt Lake City, UT
- Type
- Public
- Mascot
- Utes

Cal
Berkeley's academic weight carries a lot here, this is one of the best public universities in the country, full stop. Athletically it's been more bust than boom lately, but the history (Aaron Rodgers, Jason Kidd) and the Bay Area setting keep Cal out of the bottom half.
About Cal
The University of California, Berkeley is one of the top-ranked public research universities in the world, with a long athletic history including notable alumni like Jason Kidd and Aaron Rodgers. It joined the ACC in 2024.
- Location
- Berkeley, CA
- Type
- Public
- Mascot

CC Tier: Middle of the Pack

Arizona
Tucson basketball under Lute Olson was a national name for a generation, and that history still means something. Football has mostly been an afterthought, though, and the program has drifted in and out of relevance enough that it lands squarely in the middle.
About Arizona
The University of Arizona in Tucson built its national reputation primarily through basketball success under longtime coach Lute Olson. It joined the Big 12 in 2024.
- Location
- Tucson, AZ
- Type
- Public
- Mascot

Oregon State
Corvallis is a charming college town, and the Beavers have had real moments, Mike Riley teams, the 2006-07 College World Series titles, but the overall footprint is small and the brand rarely breaks through nationally. Being one of the last two standing in the conference's collapse says a lot about where it sits.
About Oregon State
Oregon State University in Corvallis has had standout moments in football and a particularly strong baseball program, including College World Series championships. It remains one of the two schools still formally part of the Pac-12.
- Location
- Corvallis, OR
- Type

DD Tier: Scraping By

Washington State
Pullman is remote even by Pac-12 standards, and the Cougars have spent most of their history as the league's lovable underdog rather than a real contender. Mike Leach's air raid years were fun, but fun doesn't erase decades of being an afterthought in realignment talks.
About Washington State
Washington State University in Pullman is known for its remote location and a football program that had a notable run under coach Mike Leach's air raid offense. It remains one of the two schools still formally part of the Pac-12.

How we ranked them
We weighed football and basketball history, conference titles and national relevance, campus and city appeal, academic reputation, and the overall "brand" each school carries outside its own fan base. We also factored in how these schools are remembered now that the Pac-12 has splintered, since legacy counts for a lot in a list like this. Where fans disagree, like Oregon vs. Washington or where Utah really belongs, we picked a side and explained why.
