Every vacation ranking has the same problem. The places at the top are famous for a reason, but "famous" and "great to actually visit" aren't the same thing. A spot can be stunning and still be a miserable trip if you spend half of it in a line, fighting for a photo, or paying a new fee every time you turn around.
So I went through the Vacation Spots Tier List with one question in mind: which places live up to the hype in 2026, and which ones are coasting on their postcards?
The overrated ones (at least in peak season)
Let me be clear up front. None of these places are bad. They're overrated in the sense that their reputation promises a dreamy, relaxed trip, and in summer you often get the opposite.
Santorini is the poster child. The sunsets in Oia are real, and so are the crowds. It got so bad that Greece now caps cruise passengers at 8,000 a day and charges a €20 per-person levy during peak season. When a country has to ration visitors to an island, that's a sign you might want to pick a different island, or at least a different month.
Barcelona is in a similar spot. The food, the architecture and the beach are all great. But locals have been pushing back against overtourism for years, and since April 2026, the combined city and regional tax can hit €12 a night in a five-star hotel. You'll feel welcome in plenty of neighborhoods. You just won't feel like a secret.
Kyoto is the one that hurts to put here, because it's so easy to love. But the famous temples and the Gion streets are packed, and the city raised its lodging tax in March 2026. At the top end, it's now up to ¥10,000 per person, per night for luxury stays. Kyoto still deserves a high tier. It just deserves it as a place you visit in the off-season, starting your day at 7 a.m., not as a summer bucket-list checkbox.
The underrated ones
Now the fun part. These are the spots I think deserve a bump on most people's rankings.
- Cape Town. Time Out ranked it the sixth-best city in the world for 2026, ahead of Mexico City and Bangkok. You get mountains, two oceans, great food, and wine country within an easy drive.
- Istanbul. It gets overlooked because people lump it in with a quick stopover. That's a mistake. It's a massive, layered city that sits on two continents, and a week there barely scratches it.
- Queenstown. New Zealand's adventure hub, where commercial bungee jumping got its start. Even if you skip the adrenaline stuff, the lake and mountain views are ridiculous.
- Costa Rica. It's not exactly unknown, but it tends to land in the middle of rankings, below flashier beach places. For wildlife, variety and sheer value, it should be higher.
What these places have in common is that the trip matches the pitch. You don't land in Cape Town and feel like you're seeing a watered-down version of a photo you saw online.
Why the fees change the math
A few years ago, the "overrated" debate was mostly about vibes. Now there's a money angle too. Venice charges day-trippers an access fee on its busiest days and is reportedly weighing raising it to €30. Amsterdam has spent years trying to push visitors to spread out. Kyoto, Barcelona and Santorini are all charging more. Cities are basically telling tourists, in writing, that they're at capacity.
That doesn't mean you should skip them forever. It means timing matters more than ever. Santorini in late October and Santorini in mid-August are basically two different destinations. If your tier list rates places by the trip you'd realistically take, the peak-season crowds should count against them.
How I'd rank them
If I were setting the tiers today, Kyoto still sits near the top, with the off-season caveat attached. Barcelona drops to the middle. Santorini slides a little lower, not because it isn't beautiful, but because the realistic summer trip doesn't match the photo. Cape Town and Istanbul move up into the top two tiers. Queenstown and Costa Rica join them for anyone who likes to do more than lie on a beach.
You probably have your own list of places that let you down and places that blew you away. Go put them in order on the Vacation Spots Tier List and make your own ranking.
