Sonic Games Tier List: Every Main Game Ranked
Sonic has one of the weirdest win-loss records in gaming. The highs are genuinely some of the best platformers ever made, and the lows are infamous enough to spawn a thousand memes. We went through 22 games, from the Genesis classics to the open-zone era of Frontiers, and sorted them by what actually holds up.
This list leans on decades of fan debate, critic reviews, and the kind of forum arguments that never really end. Where the community is split (and with Sonic, it often is), we picked a side and told you why. Disagree? That's part of the fun. Rank it yourself and see how close you land.

SS Tier: The classics everyone agrees on

Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Tails, the Spin Dash, Chemical Plant Zone's music, Casino Night's pinball bumpers. This is the game that made Sonic a genuine Mario rival, and it still plays beautifully today.
About Sonic the Hedgehog 2
The sequel that added Tails and the Spin Dash move. Widely considered one of the best Genesis games ever made.
- Platform
- Sega Genesis
- Release
- 1992

Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Bigger, weirder, and more ambitious than Sonic 2, with shield powers that actually change how you play and a Michael Jackson soundtrack that still slaps. Carnival Night's barrel remains a rite of passage for anyone who didn't grow up with a manual.
About Sonic the Hedgehog 3
The first half of what was meant to be one giant game before being split due to time and cartridge constraints.
- Platform
- Sega Genesis
- Release
- 1994

Sonic & Knuckles
The lock-on cartridge gimmick was a genuine flex, letting you play as Knuckles in Sonic 2 or stitch the whole thing into Sonic 3 for one mega-campaign. On its own it's still dense, hard, and gorgeous, especially Sky Sanctuary.
About Sonic & Knuckles
The second half of the Sonic 3 project, released with a lock-on cartridge slot allowing it to combine with other Genesis Sonic games.
- Platform
- Sega Genesis
- Release
- 1994

Sonic Mania
Built by the fan modders who knew the Genesis games better than Sega did, and it shows in every remixed zone and new level like Studiopolis. Proof that 2D Sonic never needed reinventing, just someone who actually understood why it worked.
About Sonic Mania
A 2D throwback developed with fan-turned-pro developers, remixing classic zones and adding new ones on Genesis-style visuals.
- Platform
- PS4 / Xbox One / Switch / PC
- Release
- 2017
AA Tier: Genuinely great Sonic

Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)
The original is a little stiff compared to its sequels, and Marble Zone tests your patience, but Green Hill Zone is still one of the most recognizable openings in gaming. It set the whole formula in motion.
About Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)
The original Genesis platformer that introduced Sonic, Dr. Robotnik, and Green Hill Zone. Developed by Sega's Sonic Team.
- Platform
- Sega Genesis
- Release
- 1991

Sonic CD
Time travel through past, present, good future, and bad future versions of each zone was a wild idea for 1993, and the Japanese soundtrack is beloved for good reason. Some find the level design mazier than the mainline trilogy, but nobody argues about Tails' Lab or that title screen animation.
About Sonic CD
A Sega CD exclusive known for its time-travel level structure and distinct soundtrack versions between regions.
- Platform
- Sega CD
- Release
- 1993

Sonic Adventure 2
Shadow's debut, Chao gardens eating entire childhoods, and a story that actually tried to be dramatic. The Hero/Dark split structure and City Escape's truck chase make this the 3D era's high point for a lot of fans.
About Sonic Adventure 2
The sequel released for Sonic's anniversary, introducing Shadow the Hedgehog and a Hero vs Dark story split.
- Platform
- Dreamcast
- Release
- 2001

Sonic Adventure
Rough edges, camera included, but this was Sonic's genuinely bold leap into 3D, with six playable characters and Emerald Coast's beach run still hitting that speed high. It aged less gracefully than its sequel but gets credit for trying first.
About Sonic Adventure
Sonic's first fully 3D adventure, launched as a flagship Dreamcast title with six playable characters.
- Platform
- Dreamcast
- Release
- 1998

Sonic Generations
A 20th anniversary victory lap that let Classic and Modern Sonic run side by side through remixed versions of Green Hill, Chemical Plant, and Sky Sanctuary. Basically a greatest-hits album, and one of the few 3D Sonic games with almost no detractors.
About Sonic Generations
An anniversary celebration pairing Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic across remixed levels from throughout the series.
- Platform
- PS3 / Xbox 360 / PC
- Release
- 2011

Sonic Frontiers
The open-zone format was a real gamble, and it mostly paid off, letting Sonic loose on big sandboxy islands instead of narrow corridors. Combat and some pop-in issues keep it out of S tier, but the combat updates and cyberspace stages won over a lot of skeptics.
About Sonic Frontiers
An open-zone platformer letting Sonic explore large island environments between traditional linear stages.
- Platform
- PS4 / PS5 / Xbox / Switch / PC
- Release
- 2022
BB Tier: Solid, with real flaws

Sonic Colors
Wisps gave Sonic new gimmicks without overcomplicating things, and the Wii version's level design (Planet Wisp especially) is some of the tightest in the 3D catalog. Dropped the dramatic story in favor of jokes, which fans mostly appreciated after Shadow and '06.
About Sonic Colors
A Wii platformer set in an amusement park in space, introducing Wisp power-ups.
- Platform
- Wii / DS
- Release
- 2010

Sonic Rush
Boost gameplay reborn on the DS, with Blaze crossing dimensions and dual-screen level design that actually used the hardware well. A genuinely great handheld Sonic game that doesn't get talked about enough outside portable fan circles.
About Sonic Rush
A handheld boost-style platformer for the Nintendo DS introducing Blaze the Cat and dual-screen level design.
- Platform
- Nintendo DS
- Release
- 2005

Sonic Unleashed
Daytime Sonic stages are some of the best boost-era platforming Sega ever made. Then it's Werehog time, and you're doing slow brawler combat that nobody asked for, which is why opinions on this one split right down the middle.
About Sonic Unleashed
A boost-platformer alternating between fast daytime Sonic stages and slower brawler-style Werehog combat at night.
- Platform
- PS3 / Xbox 360 / Wii / PS2
- Release
- 2008

Sonic 3D Blast
An isometric detour that swapped speed for puzzle-ish bird-herding, which was a tough sell right after Sonic 3. Not a bad game exactly, just a strange one to drop into the Genesis lineup, and most fans treat it as a curiosity rather than a classic.
About Sonic 3D Blast
An isometric-perspective spin-off where Sonic collects Flickies instead of running through traditional side-scrolling levels.
- Platform
- Sega Genesis / Saturn
- Release
- 1996
CC Tier: Mixed bags worth a look

Sonic Heroes
Four three-character teams, each with their own Speed/Fly/Power gimmick, sounds great on paper and gets repetitive fast in practice. Seaside Hill's music lives on forever, the actual level design is more divisive.
About Sonic Heroes
A team-based platformer where players control squads of three characters, each filling a Speed, Fly, or Power role.
- Platform
- GameCube / PS2 / Xbox
- Release
- 2003

Sonic Superstars
A return to 2D with new Chaos Emerald powers and four-player co-op, but it landed as competent rather than essential next to Mania's reputation. Fine Saturday morning Sonic, nothing more.
About Sonic Superstars
A 2D platformer with new cooperative multiplayer and Chaos Emerald-based transformation powers.
- Platform
- PS4 / PS5 / Xbox / Switch / PC
- Release
- 2023

Sonic Riders
Extreme Gear boards gave Sonic's cast a genuinely different racing hook than just karts, and the air/ground/water board types added real strategy. Physics can feel floaty and the sequels diluted the idea, but the original has a loyal cult following.
About Sonic Riders
A racing spin-off where characters race on hoverboard-like Extreme Gear across air, ground, and water tracks.
- Platform
- GameCube / PS2 / Xbox
- Release
- 2006

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds
The newest entry here, mixing in crossover guest racers and transforming vehicles in the Team Sonic Racing mold. Too new for the dust to settle completely, but early reception points to solid-not-spectacular.
About Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds
A kart-style racer featuring crossover guest characters and transforming vehicles.
- Platform
- Multi-platform
- Release
- 2025

Sonic Lost World
The tube-running parkour movement was a genuine swing at something new, and the Deadly Six made for a decent villain group, but the controls fought the level design more often than they should. Interesting failure more than a fun game for a lot of players.
About Sonic Lost World
A platformer built around tube-like running paths and parkour-style movement, featuring the Deadly Six villains.
- Platform
- Wii U / 3DS
- Release
- 2013
DD Tier: Rough going

Shadow the Hedgehog
Guns, swearing, and a tone so aggressively edgy it became a meme generator for two decades. Buried under the gimmicks there's a decent branching-path structure, but almost nobody plays this one for the gameplay anymore.
About Shadow the Hedgehog
A spin-off giving Shadow his own game, featuring weapons, vehicles, and multiple branching story paths.
- Platform
- GameCube / PS2 / Xbox
- Release
- 2005

Sonic Forces
A custom character creator was a fun idea bolted onto some of the shortest, most hand-holdy levels in the series. Classic Sonic's inclusion felt like nostalgia-bait rather than a real callback to Generations, and the whole thing is over before it gets going.
About Sonic Forces
A boost-style platformer featuring Classic Sonic, Modern Sonic, and a customizable Avatar character.
- Platform
- PS4 / Xbox One / Switch / PC
- Release
- 2017
FF Tier: The one everyone warned you about

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)
Load screens, a kiss that launched a thousand jokes, and bugs so bad they became the game's entire legacy. Everyone from critics to diehard fans agrees this is the low point, which is almost impressive given how crowded that competition is.
About Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)
A reboot-style entry for the PS3 and Xbox 360 infamous for its buggy, rushed launch state.
- Platform
- PS3 / Xbox 360
- Release
- 2006
How we ranked them
We weighed how each game played then and how it holds up now: level design, speed versus control, story ambition, and technical state at launch. Critical reception and long-term fan sentiment both count, especially for games that got rehabilitated (or ruined) by patches, re-releases, and hindsight. Spin-off genres like racing get judged against other kart racers, not against mainline platformers.

Rank these yourselfFAQ
What is the best Sonic game of all time?
Most fans and critics point to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 or Sonic Mania as the series peak, with Sonic 3 & Knuckles right there too. All three nail the speed-and-skill balance the series is built on.
What is the worst Sonic game?
Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) is the near-universal pick, thanks to a buggy launch state, awkward story, and load times that became a running joke.
Is Sonic Adventure or Sonic Adventure 2 better?
Sonic Adventure 2 generally edges it out in fan rankings for its tighter Hero/Dark structure and Shadow's debut, though Sonic Adventure gets credit for being the more experimental first attempt at 3D.
Is Sonic Frontiers good?
Yes, it's widely seen as a successful reinvention, trading linear levels for open islands. It's not flawless, but it won back a lot of fans who'd soured on the series after Forces.
Why do people like Sonic Mania so much?
It was made by longtime fans and modders who deeply understood the original Genesis trilogy, and it shows in the level design, music remixes, and attention to detail rather than trying to reinvent the wheel.
