Mario Kart Items Tier List: Every Item Ranked

Mario Kart lives and dies by its items. One good Bullet Bill or one disastrous Blue Shell can flip a whole race, and that chaos is the entire point. We're ranking all 25 items that have appeared in the series, from the Mushroom Cup staples to the weirder additions like the Crazy Eight and Thunder Cloud.

This list leans on what players and critics actually argue about on forums and in reviews, plus our own judgment when the community splits down the middle (looking at you, Blue Shell). Disagree with where something landed? That's half the fun of this game. Rank it yourself and see how close you get.

SS Tier: Race-deciding power

Super Star

Super Star

Invincibility, a speed boost, and the ability to flatten anyone in your path. It's been a top-tier item since the original SNES game and nothing has dethroned it.

About Super Star

A power-up that grants temporary invincibility and a speed boost, letting the user crash through rivals and hazards without consequence. It has appeared in every main Mario Kart game since the 1992 original.

Debut
Super Mario Kart (1992)
Effect
Invincibility and speed boost
Bullet Bill
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Bullet Bill

You lose steering, but you also turn into an unstoppable missile that auto-drives through the pack and past half the field. For a last-place racer, this is the closest thing to a free win the game offers.

About Bullet Bill

Transforms the player's kart into a fast-moving missile that auto-pilots along the track, overtaking other racers. It trades player steering control for guaranteed speed and position gains.

Debut
Mario Kart Wii
Effect
Auto-drive speed boost
Golden Mushroom
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Golden Mushroom

Unlimited mini-boosts for a set stretch of time means you can cut corners, blast through hazards, and make up huge ground. Better than a regular Mushroom in almost every way, and it shows.

About Golden Mushroom

A rare variant of the standard Mushroom that grants repeated speed boosts for a limited time instead of just one. It first appeared in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

Debut
Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

AA Tier: Reliable weapons

Spiny Shell (Blue Shell)
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Spiny Shell (Blue Shell)

The most argued-about item in the series. It's brutally effective at knocking the leader down, which is exactly why so many players in first place hate it. We're putting it in A because it does its job perfectly, even if that job is making you miserable.

About Spiny Shell (Blue Shell)

A homing shell that targets the racer in first place, exploding on impact and launching them into the air. Introduced in Mario Kart 64, it remains the series' most controversial item.

Debut
Mario Kart 64
Targets
First place racer
Mega Mushroom
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Mega Mushroom

Grow giant, squash karts, smash through obstacles, and ignore the road entirely for a few seconds. Less common than it used to be in newer entries, but when it shows up it's devastating.

About Mega Mushroom

An item that temporarily grows the user's kart to a giant size, allowing them to squash opponents and items on contact while becoming immune to most attacks.

First appearance
Mario Kart Wii
Effect
Grows the kart, allowing it to crush opponents and items
Triple Mushroom
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Triple Mushroom

Three boosts instead of one. Simple, dependable, and great for threading through tight sections of a track without worrying about running dry.

About Triple Mushroom

A variant of the Mushroom item that gives the racer three uses of a speed boost instead of one, allowing multiple short bursts of acceleration.

Effect
Grants three separate speed boosts
Fire Flower
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Fire Flower

Rapid-fire fireballs that can clear shells, hit multiple racers, and keep opponents at bay longer than a single Green Shell ever could. A genuine upgrade over the basic shells when you need sustained offense.

About Fire Flower

An item based on the classic Super Mario power-up that lets the driver throw fireballs at opponents ahead or behind. Multiple fireballs can be thrown in succession before the item is used up.

First appearance
Mario Kart 7
Effect
Allows throwing several fireballs to hit opponents
Origin
Based on the Fire Flower power-up from the Super Mario platformers
Super Horn
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Super Horn

The only reliable counter to a Blue Shell, which alone earns it a high spot. Timing the blast to pop an incoming shell right before it hits feels fantastic and swings races in Mario Kart 8.

About Super Horn

An item that emits a powerful shockwave around the kart, destroying nearby items and knocking out other racers. It is notably the only item capable of stopping a Blue Shell.

First appearance
Mario Kart 8
Effect
Creates a shockwave that destroys nearby items and racers, including Blue Shells

BB Tier: Solid, situational picks

Red Shell
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Red Shell

Homes in on the racer ahead of you, which makes it more consistent than a Green Shell but still easy to dodge with a well-timed jump or item block. A dependable middle-of-the-pack tool rather than a game-winner.

About Red Shell

A homing shell that targets and pursues the racer directly ahead of the user, making it more reliable than the Green Shell for hitting a specific opponent.

First appearance
Super Mario Kart
Effect
Homes in on the nearest racer ahead of the thrower
Triple Bananas
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Triple Bananas

Three chances to trip someone up instead of one, and you can hold them behind you as a rolling shield. Not flashy, but a smart defensive pick when you're being chased.

About Triple Bananas

A variant of the Banana item that gives the racer three bananas that orbit the kart, which can be dropped one at a time as hazards or used as a shield against incoming shells.

Effect
Provides three bananas that can be dropped individually to block opponents
Bob-omb
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Bob-omb

Bigger blast radius than a banana and can be thrown forward or dropped behind, which gives it more range than people give it credit for. Still, it telegraphs itself and skilled players just steer around it.

About Bob-omb

An item based on the walking bomb enemy from the Super Mario series. It can be thrown forward, backward, or dropped, and explodes on contact or after a short fuse, damaging nearby racers.

Effect
Thrown or dropped and explodes, damaging nearby racers
Character origin
Bob-omb is a recurring enemy from the Super Mario series
Boo
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Boo

Turns you invisible, steals an item from a rival, and makes you immune to most hazards for a few seconds. Underused by casual players but genuinely clever when you need to dodge a Blue Shell or sneak past traffic.

About Boo

An item featuring the ghost character Boo, which turns the user invisible and immune to most attacks for a short time while also stealing an item from another racer.

Effect
Grants temporary invisibility and steals an opponent's item
Character origin
Boo is a recurring ghost enemy from the Super Mario series
Piranha Plant
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Piranha Plant

Chomps nearby racers and items automatically while giving you boosts for biting coins or item boxes. A fun addition from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe that rewards aggressive driving near the pack.

About Piranha Plant

An item that attaches a Piranha Plant to the front of the kart, allowing the driver to snap it forward to bite opponents, destroy items, or chomp coins and item boxes for a speed boost.

First appearance
Mario Kart 8
Effect
Chomps nearby opponents, items, or coins for boosts or damage
Boomerang Flower
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Boomerang Flower

Throw it out, catch it, throw it again. Up to three uses with forward and backward range makes this a sleeper pick that newer players tend to overlook.

About Boomerang Flower

An item that lets the driver throw a boomerang that travels forward and returns back, capable of hitting opponents on both the outgoing and return trip. It can be thrown up to three times before disappearing.

First appearance
Mario Kart 7
Effect
Thrown forward and returns, hitting racers along its path

CC Tier: Fine but forgettable

Mushroom
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Mushroom

The most basic item in the box. One quick boost that's handy for cutting a corner but rarely changes the outcome of a race on its own.

About Mushroom

One of the most basic items in the series, giving the racer a brief but significant speed boost. It is also useful for cutting across off-road shortcuts without losing speed.

First appearance
Super Mario Kart
Effect
Provides a short burst of speed
Green Shell
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Green Shell

Goes straight, bounces off walls, and can be aimed forward or backward. Useful but the least threatening of the three main shells since any decent driver just avoids the straight line.

About Green Shell

A basic shell item that travels in a straight line, bouncing off walls, until it hits a racer or obstacle. It can also be held behind the kart for defense.

First appearance
Super Mario Kart
Effect
Travels straight and bounces off walls, hitting whatever it strikes
Banana
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Banana

A classic trip hazard that's more about denying a line on the track than actually hitting someone. Great for item boxes, less great as an actual weapon.

About Banana

A classic hazard item that is dropped behind the kart or thrown forward, causing any racer who drives over it to spin out.

First appearance
Super Mario Kart
Effect
Causes any racer who touches it to spin out
Coin
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Coin

Technically an item, but all it does is nudge your top speed up slightly through the coin count. Fine to pick up, disappointing to pull from a box when you wanted something with teeth.

About Coin

A basic item found scattered on tracks and in item boxes throughout the Mario Kart series. Collecting coins provides a small, stacking speed boost and is also tied to a driver's maximum item box luck in some games.

Effect
Provides a small speed increase and affects kart stats
Loss condition
Some coins are dropped when a racer is hit or falls off track
Super Leaf
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Super Leaf

The tail attack adds a bit of defense and can clip nearby racers, but it's a modest tool at best. A nice callback to Super Mario Bros. 3 more than a serious weapon.

About Super Leaf

An item based on the Super Leaf power-up from Super Mario Bros. 3, giving the driver a Tanooki tail that can be swung to hit nearby racers or incoming shells. It also grants a brief speed boost when used.

First appearance
Mario Kart 7
Effect
Grants a swingable tail to attack nearby opponents and block items
Origin
Based on the Super Leaf power-up from the Super Mario platformers

DD Tier: Mostly annoying

Lightning
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Lightning

Shrinks the whole field and lets you run them over, which sounds great until you realize how often it goes to someone in the back who barely benefits. Powerful in theory, inconsistent in practice, and a real mood-killer for whoever was leading.

About Lightning

A powerful item that shrinks every other racer on the track, making them small, slow, and easy to flatten for a short period of time.

First appearance
Super Mario Kart
Effect
Shrinks all other racers, slowing them and making them vulnerable
Blooper
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Blooper

Splatters ink across every screen ahead of you, which is annoying rather than dangerous. It slows reaction time more than it causes actual crashes, and most players just wait it out.

About Blooper

An item featuring the squid-like Blooper enemy, which squirts ink onto the screens of opponents ahead of the user, obscuring their vision for a short time.

First appearance
Mario Kart 64
Effect
Covers the screens of racers ahead with ink, impairing visibility
Character origin
Blooper is a recurring enemy from the Super Mario series
POW Block
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

POW Block

Hits everyone ahead of the user with a stun and a spin, but it's a battle-item staple that feels clunky in regular races. Appears rarely enough that most players forget it exists until it's too late to react.

About POW Block

An item in the Mario Kart series that, when used, causes a shockwave with three pulses that spins out and slows down every racer ahead of the user. Opponents can avoid the full effect by hopping at the moment each shockwave hits.

First appearance
Mario Kart Wii
Effect
Spins out all racers in front of the user
Counter
Jumping (hopping) at impact reduces the effect
Fake Item Box
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Fake Item Box

A disguised obstacle that only works on players who aren't paying attention. Experienced racers spot the subtle wobble a mile away, which makes this one of the weaker trick items in the roster.

About Fake Item Box

An item disguised to look like a regular item box that spins out any racer who drives into it, including, in some games, the player who deployed it if they are not careful.

First appearance
Mario Kart 64
Effect
Spins out racers who collide with it, mimicking a real item box

FF Tier: Nobody's happy to see this

Thunder Cloud
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Thunder Cloud

Gives you a speed boost, sure, but it follows you around and eventually shrinks you unless you pass it off to someone else. An item that punishes the player who picked it up is a strange design choice, and almost nobody wants to see this one drop.

About Thunder Cloud

An item introduced in Mario Kart 8 that boosts the user's speed but shrinks them if it isn't passed to another racer before it expires. It's one of the few items that can hurt its own user.

Debut
Mario Kart 8
Crazy Eight
Image: Mario Kart Racing Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Crazy Eight

Surrounds you with eight random items, which sounds exciting but mostly means juggling a cloud of icons while trying to actually drive. It's a novelty from Mario Kart 7 that never found a real niche and rarely gets requested back.

About Crazy Eight

An item from Mario Kart 7 that surrounds the player with eight different items circling their kart, usable one at a time.

Debut
Mario Kart 7

How we ranked them

We ranked items on how much they actually swing a race: damage dealt, defense given, speed gained, and how often they show up at the wrong (or right) moment. We also weighed how players feel about receiving them versus getting hit by them, since a item that's great to use but miserable to face against tends to split opinion. Where the fanbase genuinely disagrees, we say so and explain which side we land on.

FAQ

What is the best item in Mario Kart?

Most fans point to the Super Star, Bullet Bill, or Golden Mushroom as the strongest items, since each can single-handedly flip a race in the user's favor.

Why do people hate the Blue Shell?

The Spiny Shell (Blue Shell) targets whoever is in first place and usually guarantees a hit, which frustrates players who've built up a big lead through skill alone.

Is the Lightning item worth getting?

It's powerful because it shrinks every other racer, but it's random who benefits most, so plenty of players feel let down when it goes to someone far from the front.

What does the Super Horn do?

It emits a shockwave that hits nearby racers and items, and it's best known as the only item that can destroy an incoming Blue Shell.

Which item is considered the weakest in Mario Kart?

The Thunder Cloud and Crazy Eight tend to rank lowest with fans, since one punishes the player who grabs it and the other is more clutter than weapon.
