Horror Video Games Tier List: Every Classic Ranked

Thirty-two games, one impossible question: what actually makes a horror game great? We pulled together forums, review scores and our own late-night, lights-off playthroughs to rank the genre's biggest names, from survival horror founders to the YouTube jumpscare machines that took over the internet.

Some placements will make people mad. That's fine. Horror fans argue about this stuff more than almost any other genre, and we've tried to land somewhere honest rather than safe. Disagree? You should. That's half the fun of a list like this.

Silent Hill 2
Cover: Wikipedia

Silent Hill 2

The fog, the radio static, Pyramid Head dragging that giant knife across the apartment floor: nothing has matched the dread this game builds. It's less about monsters than about James Sunderland's guilt, and that psychological angle is why critics still call it one of the smartest scripts in gaming.

About Silent Hill 2

A standalone follow-up widely regarded as one of the best horror games ever made, centered on James Sunderland and a mysterious letter from his dead wife.

Released
2001
Developer
Konami
Resident Evil 4
Cover: Wikipedia

Resident Evil 4

It basically rebuilt third-person action games from the ground up, and the village opener with the chainsaw guy is still one of gaming's great first ten minutes. Less pure horror than the earlier entries, more tension-driven shooter, but nobody argues it's not a masterpiece.

About Resident Evil 4

A major reinvention of the series that shifted it toward action-horror, following Leon Kennedy into a remote Spanish village. Originally released for GameCube.

Resident Evil 2 (2019)

Resident Evil 2 (2019)

A remake that somehow improves on a classic instead of just polishing it. Mr. X stomping through the police station turned a fixed patrol route into genuine panic, and the over-the-shoulder camera makes every zombie encounter feel like it could go wrong fast.

About Resident Evil 2 (2019)

A full remake of the 1998 original, rebuilt with modern over-the-shoulder controls and the RE Engine. Follows Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield through the Raccoon City outbreak.

P.T.
Cover: Wikipedia

P.T.

A playable teaser for a Silent Hill game that got cancelled, and yet it's still discussed like scripture. That looping hallway with Lisa shuffling closer each time remains one of the purest horror ideas ever shipped, which is brutal considering you can't even download it anymore.

About P.T.

A playable teaser for a cancelled Silent Hill game directed by Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro, centered on a looping, increasingly disturbing hallway.

Alien: Isolation
Cover: Wikipedia

Alien: Isolation

One Xenomorph, one ship, and an AI that actually learns your hiding spots. Most horror games throw enemies at you; this one makes a single creature feel smarter than you, and the motion tracker beeping in a vent is enough to make anyone sweat.

About Alien: Isolation

A survival horror game set 15 years after the original Alien film, featuring an adaptive AI-controlled Xenomorph stalking the player.

Resident Evil Village

Resident Evil Village

Lady Dimitrescu got all the internet attention, but the whole castle section earns it, oozing gothic dread before the game pivots into something weirder. It's a bit of a theme park tour through horror subgenres, but a well-built one.

About Resident Evil Village

A direct sequel to RE7 following Ethan Winters into an Eastern European village full of gothic monsters, including the widely memed Lady Dimitrescu.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

First-person and set in a rotting Louisiana plantation house, this one dragged the series back to actual horror after years of action-movie bloat. The Baker family dinner scene alone justifies the switch in perspective.

About Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

A first-person reboot of the series' horror roots, set in a Louisiana plantation house inhabited by the Baker family.

Dead Space
Cover: Wikipedia

Dead Space

Strategic dismemberment as a combat mechanic was genuinely new, and the Ishimura is one of gaming's great haunted houses dressed up as a spaceship. No HUD, just a glowing spine on Isaac's back, and somehow that makes it scarier.

About Dead Space

A sci-fi survival horror game following engineer Isaac Clarke aboard the derelict mining ship USG Ishimura, infested with Necromorphs.

Soma

Soma

Frictional Games traded jump scares for existential horror about consciousness and identity, and it's more unsettling for it. The underwater sections are terrifying in a quiet, suffocating way most games don't even attempt.

Resident Evil (1996)

Resident Evil (1996)

Clunky tank controls and voice acting that's become a running joke, but this is the game that invented the survival horror blueprint: limited ammo, save rooms, a mansion full of dread. Everything on this list owes it something.

About Resident Evil (1996)

The game that established survival horror as a genre, set in the zombie-infested Spencer Mansion. Developed by Capcom for the original PlayStation.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Cover: Wikipedia

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

No weapons, no combat, just a sanity meter and the option to hide in a closet and hope. It helped kick off the whole 2010s wave of streamer-friendly horror, and the Water Monster sections still get cited as peak "turn it off" moments.

About Amnesia: The Dark Descent

The Evil Within

Shinji Mikami's follow-up to Resident Evil is a messier, grosser, more chaotic game, but the body-horror set pieces and that chainsaw-wielding Sadist are the kind of stuff fans still post clips of.

A survival horror game from Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, following detective Sebastian Castellanos into a nightmarish, shifting world.

Alan Wake 2

Alan Wake 2

Remedy went full art-house with this one, mixing live-action segments with a genuinely creepy Pacific Northwest setting. It's divisive for its pacing, but the Saga Anderson sections nail a slow-burn dread that pays off hard.

Little Nightmares

Bullet-time gunfights mixed with a little girl named Alma appearing in hallways shouldn't work, but it does. The combat holds up better than most horror shooters from its era, and Alma crawling toward the camera is still unnerving.

Layers of Fear

Layers of Fear

A painter's mansion that rearranges itself when you're not looking is a great hook, and the visual trickery is genuinely clever the first time through. It leans hard on jump scares and walking-sim pacing that some fans find thin on replay.

How we ranked them

We weighed lasting influence on the genre, how well the scares actually hold up today, replay value, and the strength of fan and critic consensus pulled from reviews and years of forum debate. Innovation counts for a lot here; a game that changed how horror gets made ranks above one that just executes an old formula well. Where the fanbase itself is split, we made a call and explained why.

FAQ

What is the scariest horror video game of all time?

There's no single answer fans agree on, but Alien: Isolation, P.T., and Silent Hill 2 come up constantly in these debates for how relentlessly they build dread rather than relying on jump scares.

What is considered the first true survival horror game?

Resident Evil (1996) is usually credited with defining the genre's template, though Alone in the Dark came earlier and influenced it heavily.

Is Five Nights at Freddy's actually scary or just popular?

Critics generally agree it leans on jump scares more than atmosphere, but its lore and animatronic designs built one of the biggest horror fandoms of the last decade regardless.

Why do fans still talk about P.T. if you can't even play it anymore?

It was delisted after Silent Hills got cancelled, but its looping hallway design influenced countless indie horror games that followed, which keeps it relevant in discussions.

Is Resident Evil 4 still worth playing after all these years?

Yes, both the 2005 original and the 2023 remake are still widely recommended as entry points into the series and the genre.
