Grand Theft Auto Games Ranked: Every Entry, Best to Worst
GTA 6 has a date now, November 19, 2026, and that's got everyone digging back through the franchise's history arguing about which entries actually hold up. So we did the obvious thing and ranked all eleven of them, from the top-down chaos of the original 1997 game to the still-untouchable San Andreas.
This list covers the mainline console games, the PSP and DS handhelds, and the two old-school top-down originals. It's built on where fans and critics actually agree, with a few calls made where the community is genuinely split. Disagree with the order? That's half the fun of a series this argued-over, rank it yourself and see where it lands.

SS Tier: The all-timers

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Three cities, a state's worth of countryside, gyms, gangs, a jetpack, and CJ, one of the series' best-written leads. It's messy in places (the RC missions, the girlfriend mini-games nobody asked for) but the ambition is the point. Nothing before or since has matched its scope.
About Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
2004 entry following CJ across three fictional cities modeled on Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas. Known for its scope, RPG-style features, and gang-war storyline.
- Released
- 2004
- Protagonist
- Carl 'CJ' Johnson
- Setting
- State of San Andreas

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Tommy Vercetti, a synth soundtrack, and a neon-drenched map that still feels like the coolest place Rockstar ever built. It's smaller than San Andreas and V, but nobody's ever complained about that once they're driving down Ocean Beach with the radio on. The fact it's coming back for GTA 6 tells you everything about how well this era aged.
About Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
2002 game set in a fictional Miami analog during the 1980s, starring Tommy Vercetti. Praised for its soundtrack, aesthetic, and voice cast.
- Released
- 2002
- Protagonist
- Tommy Vercetti
- Setting
- Vice City, 1986

Grand Theft Auto V
Three protagonists, a genuinely funny script, and a Los Santos that still looks sharp over a decade later, that's a hard combo to beat. Critics loved it, over 200 million copies sold say players did too, though plenty of fans will tell you GTA Online eventually ate the single-player game alive.
About Grand Theft Auto V

AA Tier: Genuinely great

Grand Theft Auto IV
The most divisive game on this list. It scored a 98 on Metacritic and Niko Bellic is arguably the series' most human protagonist, but hardcore fans still gripe about the physics-heavy driving, the somber tone, and cousin Roman's bowling invitations. Great game, just not the fun-first arcade energy people wanted after San Andreas.
About Grand Theft Auto IV
2008 entry following Eastern European immigrant Niko Bellic in a re-imagined Liberty City. Scored 98 on Metacritic and pushed the series toward a more serious, grounded tone.
- Released
- 2008
- Protagonist
- Niko Bellic
- Metacritic
- 98

Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony
The DLC that fixed GTA IV's mood problem. Faster cars, a parachute, nightclubs, and Luis Lopez being a far breezier lead than Niko, this is IV's world with the fun dialed back up. Genuinely one of the best expansions Rockstar's ever shipped.
About Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony
The second story DLC for GTA IV, released in 2009, following bodyguard Luis Lopez through Liberty City's nightclub scene.
- Released
- 2009
- Protagonist
- Luis Lopez
- Type
- Episodic DLC for GTA IV
BB Tier: Respected, if debated

Grand Theft Auto III
The game that invented the modern open-world crime genre, full stop. Claude never says a word, the camera fights you constantly, and Liberty City looks primitive now, but the chaos it enabled was genuinely new in 2001, and the cheat codes alone earned it a permanent place in gaming history.
About Grand Theft Auto III
The 2001 game that established the modern 3D open-world formula for the series, set in Liberty City with a silent protagonist named Claude.
- Released
- 2001
- Protagonist
- Claude
- Setting
- Liberty City

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
A PSP game that punched way above its hardware, revisiting Liberty City with tighter mission design than III ever had. It doesn't get talked about much next to the console entries, but the people who played it on a plane or a bus in 2005 remember it fondly.
About Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
A 2005 PSP prequel set before GTA III, following Toni Cipriani through the Liberty City mob scene.
- Released
- 2005
- Protagonist
- Toni Cipriani
- Platform
- PSP

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
The top-down DS entry that nobody expected to be this good, drug dealing mini-games, a touchscreen bomb-defusing puzzle, and surprisingly sharp writing for a handheld spinoff. Fans who actually played it rate it higher than its reputation suggests.
About Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
A 2009 top-down entry made for Nintendo DS (and later PSP/mobile), featuring drug-dealing mechanics and touchscreen mini-games.
- Released
- 2009
- Platform
- Nintendo DS
- Setting
- Liberty City
CC Tier: Solid but overshadowed

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories
Victor Vance's story never quite escapes the shadow of Tommy Vercetti's Vice City, and playing it right after the original makes the smaller scope obvious. Solid handheld game, but it's the definition of a spinoff that exists because the setting was popular.
About Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories
A 2006 PSP prequel to Vice City, starring Victor Vance and set two years before Tommy Vercetti's story.
- Released
- 2006
- Protagonist
- Victor Vance
- Platform
- PSP
DD Tier: Fine for what it was

Grand Theft Auto 2
A cult curiosity more than a classic, top-down chaos with gang respect meters and a cyberpunk-lite future setting that never really went anywhere else in the series. Worth knowing about for the history, not worth chasing down to actually play.
About Grand Theft Auto 2
A 1999 top-down sequel introducing a gang respect system and a near-future setting, before the series jumped to 3D.
- Released
- 1999
- Perspective
- Top-down

Grand Theft Auto: London 1969
This was the expansion pack to the original GTA, swapping the American cities for Swinging Sixties London, complete with Mini Coopers and Cockney slang. It's a neat historical curiosity if you're into the era, but the top-down gameplay was already showing its age even back then. The London 1961 expansion tacked onto it is more of a footnote than an addition, just a handful of extra missions and a different year on the box.
About Grand Theft Auto: London 1969
An expansion pack for the original Grand Theft Auto, set in a recreation of London during the late 1960s. It introduced new vehicles, missions, and British-themed content, including period appropriate slang and music.
- Released
- 1999
- Platform
- PlayStation, Microsoft Windows
- Type
- Expansion pack / standalone release
- Developer
- DMA Design
FF Tier: Skip it

Grand Theft Auto 1
The one that started it all, and also the one most people have genuinely never played. A 1997 top-down game with primitive everything by today's standards, it matters historically, but there's no argument for booting this up over literally anything else on this list.
About Grand Theft Auto 1
The original 1997 top-down game that started the series, released for PC and PlayStation with a simple mission structure and multiple city settings.
- Released
- 1997
- Perspective
- Top-down

Grand Theft Auto Advance
Squeezing GTA onto a Game Boy Advance cartridge sounds like a fun idea on paper, and credit to the devs for getting a top-down open world running on that hardware at all. In practice it plays like a stripped-down GTA 2 with worse controls and none of the personality that makes the series worth caring about. A tech demo more than a game you'd actually choose to boot up.
About Grand Theft Auto Advance
A top-down action game developed for the Game Boy Advance, serving as a handheld adaptation of the Grand Theft Auto III era setting. It was developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Rockstar Games, bringing open-world crime gameplay to a portable system.

How we ranked them
We weighed critical scores, sales and cultural staying power against what players actually say when they replay these games today: does the map still feel alive, do the missions hold up, does the protagonist matter. Nostalgia counts for something, it's part of why Vice City and San Andreas hit so hard, but so does whether a game aged into a museum piece or a classic. Where the fanbase is split (looking at you, GTA IV), we picked a side and explained why.

Rank these yourselfFAQ
What is the best GTA game ever made?
San Andreas and Vice City are the two most consistently praised by fans and critics, with GTA V right behind them for scale and polish. It really comes down to whether you value scope (San Andreas), atmosphere (Vice City), or modern production (V).
Is GTA IV underrated or overrated?
Both, depending who you ask. It's the most critically acclaimed entry on Metacritic, but a lot of hardcore fans call it the weakest mainline game because of the heavy driving physics and darker tone compared to San Andreas.
Where does the Definitive Edition trilogy rank?
It's not on this list because it's a remaster, not a separate game, but it's worth knowing it's widely considered the low point of the franchise's modern era, buggy, missing content, and criticized as a cash grab even after patches.
Is Vice City really coming back in GTA 6?
Yes, GTA 6 is set in a version of Vice City, which is a big part of why the original 2002 game is getting so much renewed attention right now.
When does GTA 6 come out?
November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a PC version to follow later.
What's the worst GTA game?
By consensus it's the original 1997 Grand Theft Auto, historically important but rough to actually play now. GTA 2 isn't far ahead of it, staying more of a cult curiosity than a genuine favorite.
