Eeveelutions Tier List: All 8 Ranked Best to Worst

Eevee's whole gimmick is choice anxiety, and these eight evolutions are why. Each one takes the same wobbly fox-cat base and pushes it in a completely different direction, from competitive staples to the kind of Pokémon you evolve once and never think about again.

We ranked all eight by competitive usefulness, design, typing utility, and how much fans and critics actually talk about them across battle forums and reviews. Some of these are genuinely contested, so we picked a side and explained why. Disagree? That's half the fun of an Eevee argument.

SS Tier: The ones everyone wants on their team

Umbreon

Umbreon

Umbreon does nothing flashy and that's exactly the point. Massive special defense, reliable recovery, and a Dark typing that walls half the metagame on sheer stubbornness. It's also just a great design, all those glowing rings feel more menacing than anything in its stat spread actually is.

Sylveon

Sylveon

The newest Eeveelution and arguably the one that aged best. Fairy typing gave it an instant niche against Dragons and Fighting types, and the ribbon-feeler design split opinion at first but has become one of the most recognizable Pokémon of the last decade. Competitively and visually, it just works.

AA Tier: Genuinely great, minor nitpicks only

Espeon

Espeon

Blazing special attack and speed make Espeon a glass cannon that usually gets its hit in first. The friendship evolution requirement used to be a pain, but once you have it, Espeon rewards you with one of the best Psychic-type movepools around. Loses points only because Psychic has some rough matchups late-game.

Jolteon

Jolteon

Pure speed and special attack, no frills. Jolteon was a nightmare in early generations when special/physical split didn't exist yet, and it still hits hard today. Fans argue it got passed by as newer Electric types showed up, but the base kit is still excellent.

BB Tier: Solid, reliable, a bit overshadowed

Vaporeon

Vaporeon

Huge HP and a great defensive typing make Vaporeon a tank that can stall out almost anything with Wish support. It's less exciting than the others on this list, which is probably why it gets slightly less hype despite being extremely usable. The internet's weird memes about it aside, it's a genuinely solid pick.

Leafeon

Leafeon

Leafeon gets slept on constantly, and that's not entirely fair. Grass typing is rough defensively, but the attack stat and access to Swords Dance make it a sneaky physical threat. It needed the evolution-stone method fixed before people warmed up to it, and even now it's the forgotten middle child.

CC Tier: Fine, but you'll bench them eventually

Glaceon

Glaceon

Ice typing is gorgeous and terrible at the same time, four weaknesses will do that. Glaceon hits hard on the special side and looks fantastic, all crystalline and cool-toned, but it just can't take a hit. Fans like the aesthetic more than the battle performance.

FF Tier: Sorry, Flareon

Flareon

Flareon

Flareon has the saddest story of the bunch: great attack stat, nowhere to use it. Fire is a fine offensive type, but Flareon's movepool and speed have never kept pace, and it's been passed by Fire-types with actual utility for literal generations. Even fans who love the design admit it's the weakest link.

How we ranked them

We weighed competitive viability across the games (movepool, stats, typing match-ups), design and personality, and how often each one shows up in "best Eeveelution" discussions among fans and reviewers. Nostalgia counts for something, but it doesn't save a Pokémon that's been outclassed for three generations. Where the community is split, we say so and explain our pick.

FAQ

What is the best Eeveelution overall?

Fans and competitive players most often point to Umbreon or Sylveon, thanks to Umbreon's defensive wall potential and Sylveon's Fairy typing advantage.

What is the worst Eeveelution?

Flareon is the most commonly cited weakest link, mainly because its stats and movepool have been outclassed by other Fire-type Pokémon for years.

Which Eeveelution is best for competitive battling?

Umbreon, Sylveon, Espeon, and Jolteon are the four most commonly used in competitive play, each for different reasons tied to typing and stats.

How do you evolve Eevee into each Eeveelution?

Methods vary: Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon use elemental stones, Espeon and Umbreon evolve through friendship at day or night, Leafeon and Glaceon evolve near specific mossy or icy rocks, and Sylveon evolves through friendship with a Fairy-type move known.

Is Sylveon the newest Eeveelution?

Yes, Sylveon was introduced in Generation 6, but it is not the most recent addition to the Eeveelution family, as newer Eeveelutions have been introduced in later generations.
