Studio Ghibli Characters Tier List: Ranked Best to Worst
Twelve characters, one impossible task: putting a number on magic. We pulled from across the Ghibli catalog, Totoro to Princess Mononoke to Howl's Moving Castle, to rank the ones people actually talk about years later.
This is based on what shows up again and again in fan discussions, critic reviews and the general cultural footprint each character has left. Some of these picks will be obvious. A few will start arguments. That's the point. Disagree with us in your own head and rank them yourself, because that's half the fun of a list like this.

SS Tier: The icons

No-Face
The one character from this list that non-Ghibli fans still recognize instantly. No-Face is unsettling, sad, funny and horrifying sometimes in the same scene, and that gold-vomiting bathhouse sequence alone earns the top spot.

Calcifer
A literal fire demon who somehow became the comic heart of Howl's Moving Castle. Calcifer gets the best lines, the best sight gags, and the most quietly moving ending of anyone in his own movie.
AA Tier: Fan favorites

Catbus
Twelve legs, a grin that shouldn't work on a bus, and an entrance that makes every kid in the audience gasp. Catbus doesn't get much screen time but nobody forgets it.

San
Raised by wolves, furious at humanity, and never fully redeemed into a typical heroine, San stays prickly right to the credits. That refusal to soften her is exactly why critics still point to Mononoke as Ghibli's most mature film.

Howl
Vain, dramatic, prone to collapsing into a puddle of green slime over hair dye, and still one of the more compelling love interests in animation. Howl's mess of a personality is the whole appeal.

Kiki
A thirteen-year-old witch with a broom, a radio, and a crisis of confidence that hits harder than it should. Kiki's Delivery Service turned a simple coming-of-age story into one of the studio's most rewatched films.

Nausicaä
Technically pre-Ghibli, but nobody argues against including her. Nausicaä is the blueprint for basically every Miyazaki heroine that came after, and the Valley of the Wind's toxic jungle still looks more inventive than most modern sci-fi.
BB Tier: Loved, but not untouchable

Sophie Hatter
Turned into an old woman for most of her own movie, which is a wild choice that somehow works. Sophie's quiet stubbornness holds Howl's Moving Castle together even when the plot gets genuinely confusing.

Porco Rosso
A pig-faced fighter pilot with a curse nobody explains and a general disdain for fascists. Porco Rosso is beloved by the people who've seen it, but it's the least widely watched film here, which caps him lower than his charm deserves.
How we ranked them
We weighed cultural staying power, emotional impact, how well the character defines their film, and how often they come up outside Ghibli circles entirely (merch, memes, cosplay, general pop culture presence). Originality mattered too: some of these characters invented archetypes other studios still copy. Where fan opinion splits, we made a call and explained why.

Rank these yourselfFAQ
What is the most popular Studio Ghibli character?
Totoro is the most recognized worldwide, but among the characters ranked here, No-Face and Calcifer get the most consistent love from critics and fans alike.
Is Nausicaä actually a Studio Ghibli character?
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind came out before Studio Ghibli was officially founded, but Miyazaki made it and the studio claims it as part of the canon, so fans generally count her.
Why is San ranked above Ashitaka?
San gets more fan attention for her unresolved anger and refusal to fully reconcile with humans, which critics often cite as a braver character choice than Ashitaka's steadier arc.
What is the Laputa Robot Soldier from?
It's from Castle in the Sky (1986), one of the robotic guardians of the floating city of Laputa.
Are Kodama from Princess Mononoke dangerous?
No, Kodama are considered signs of a healthy forest in the film. Their rattling heads are more eerie than threatening.
