One Piece Straw Hat Pirates Tier List, Ranked
Ten pirates, one dinky ship (well, two, if you count the upgrade), and a captain who can't swim. Ranking the Straw Hat crew is basically a bar argument among One Piece fans, so we dug through the forums, the power scaling debates and the "who's the best written character" threads to put together a consensus list, with our own tiebreakers where the fandom just won't agree.
This isn't a pure strength ranking. We weighed combat ability, plot importance, character development and how much a crew member actually brings to the table beyond punching things. Rank your own crew in your head while you read, you'll probably fight us on at least one spot.

SS Tier: The pillars of the crew

Monkey D. Luffy
The guy who started it all with a straw hat and a promise to Shanks. Luffy's power scaling has gone from rubber-man gags to Gear 5 reality-bending nonsense, but what keeps him S tier is that every fight still ties back to who he is: a captain who refuses to let his crew get hurt. Loses to Katakuri, beats Kaido, cries like a kid when he loses a friend. That's the whole appeal.
About Monkey D. Luffy
Captain of the Straw Hat Pirates and the series' protagonist, a rubber-bodied pirate chasing the title of Pirate King. Created by Eiichiro Oda, he ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi (later revealed to be the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika).
- Role
- Captain
- Devil Fruit
- Gomu Gomu no Mi / Hito Hito no Mi Model: Nika
- Bounty
- Over 8.

Roronoa Zoro
Three swords, zero sense of direction, and an ambition to be the world's greatest swordsman that never feels like empty talk. Zoro's rivalry with Mihawk and his brutal arc against King gave him some of the best fight choreography in the series. Fans argue endlessly about his final power level, but nobody argues about his spot near the top of the crew.
About Roronoa Zoro
First member to join Luffy's crew, a swordsman aiming to become the world's greatest. Trains under Mihawk and fights using a three-sword style of his own invention.
- Role
- Swordsman
- Fighting Style
- Santoryu (three-sword style)
- Goal
- World's Greatest Swordsman
AA Tier: Essential and beloved

Nico Robin
Her backstory at Ohara is one of the heaviest things One Piece has ever done, and it's why her 'I want to live' moment at Enies Lobby hits so hard. Devil fruit utility aside (Hana Hana no Mi is criminally flexible in a fight), Robin's the crew's historian and emotional backbone, the one who actually reads the room.
About Nico Robin
Archaeologist and sole survivor of the destroyed island of Ohara, seeking to uncover the true history of the world. Ate the Hana Hana no Mi.
- Role
- Archaeologist
- Devil Fruit
- Hana Hana no Mi
- Origin
- Ohara

Sanji
Cook, fighter, hopeless romantic who still won't hit a woman even mid-battle, which somehow never feels like a flaw once you know Zeff's backstory. His Diable Jambe kicks look as good as Zoro's sword work, and the Whole Cake Island arc gave him some of the saddest family drama in the series. Underrated as a strategist too.
About Sanji
The crew's cook, raised by Zeff on the Baratie restaurant ship. Fights almost exclusively with his legs to keep his hands free for cooking.
- Role
- Cook
- Fighting Style
- Black Leg Style
- Dream
- To find the All Blue
BB Tier: Reliable and well-loved

Tony Tony Chopper
A reindeer who ate a human-human fruit and just wants to be a good doctor. Chopper's comic relief on the surface, but Drum Island is a genuinely gutting origin story, and his Monster Point form proves he's not just there for cuteness. Fans split on whether he should rank higher, we think his impact is more emotional than tactical.
About Tony Tony Chopper
A reindeer who gained human traits from the Hito Hito no Mi and serves as the crew's doctor. Raised by Dr. Hiriluk on Drum Island.
- Role
- Doctor
- Devil Fruit
- Hito Hito no Mi
- Dream
- To cure any disease

Franky
Built the Thousand Sunny, remembers Tom's sacrifice, and somehow makes 'SUPER' a personality trait rather than an annoying catchphrase. Franky's cyborg upgrades keep getting sillier (and more powerful), and his loyalty to Water 7's shipwrights gives him more depth than people give him credit for.
About Franky
The crew's shipwright and a cyborg who built the Thousand Sunny. Former apprentice of the legendary shipwright Tom.
- Role
- Shipwright
- Built
- Thousand Sunny
- Catchphrase
- SUPER!

Jinbe
The newest official member but it barely shows, since he'd been orbiting the crew's story since Impel Down. A former Warlord with real conviction, his fight against Wadatsumi and his loyalty to both Luffy and the fishman community make him feel earned rather than tacked on.
About Jinbe
A fishman helmsman and former Warlord of the Sea, the tenth member to officially join the crew. Known for his fishman karate and strong sense of honor.
- Role
- Helmsman
- Fighting Style
- Fishman Karate
- Former Title
- Warlord of the Sea
CC Tier: Great characters, smaller roles

Usopp
The liar who grows into the guy who actually tells the hardest truths, especially to Luffy on Dressrosa. His Sogeking arc and Charlotte Linlin-era dial work show real growth, but let's be honest, his fights still rely more on cleverness than raw power, which is exactly the point of his character.
About Usopp
The crew's sniper and self-proclaimed brave warrior, despite starting out as a nervous liar. Son of Yasopp, a member of Shanks' crew.
- Role
- Sniper
- Alias
- Sogeking
- Weapon
- Kabuto slingshot

Brook
A skeleton who waited 50 years alone on the Florian Triangle just to keep a promise, which is one of the more quietly tragic backstories in the whole series. Brook's violin music and skeleton jokes can wear thin for some fans, but Soul Solid sword style and his loyalty to Laboon earn him real respect.
About Brook
A skeleton musician who died once and was revived by his own Devil Fruit power, then spent decades alone before joining the crew. Former member of the Rumbar Pirates.
- Role
- Musician
- Devil Fruit
- Yomi Yomi no Mi
- Fighting Style
- Soul Solid swordsmanship

Nami
Her Arlong Park backstory is one of the earliest emotional gut-punches in the series, and her navigation skills keep the crew alive more than people credit. Fans disagree on whether her combat utility (Clima-Tact, weather manipulation) has kept pace with everyone else's power creep, and honestly, that's a fair complaint.
About Nami
The crew's navigator, joined early in the series after her Arlong Park backstory. Known for her weather-based weapon, the Clima-Tact.
- Role
- Navigator
- Weapon
- Clima-Tact
- Dream
- To draw a complete map of the world
How we ranked them
We looked at raw combat strength, narrative weight, character arc quality and overall fan favorite status, leaning on what forums and reviewers tend to agree on. Where the fandom splits hard (looking at you, Usopp vs Chopper arguments), we made a call and explained why. Power alone doesn't win here, impact on the story and the crew counts for a lot too.

Rank these yourselfFAQ
Who is the strongest Straw Hat Pirate?
Monkey D. Luffy, by a wide margin, especially after unlocking Gear 5. Zoro is generally considered the second strongest.
Who was the last person to officially join the Straw Hat crew?
Jinbe, who became the tenth member after the Whole Cake Island arc, though he'd been connected to the crew's story since Impel Down.
Why is Nami ranked lower despite being a founding member?
It's not about importance, it's about combat scaling. Her navigation and backstory are crucial to the crew, but her fighting power hasn't kept pace with the series' escalating threats, which fans debate often.
Is this ranking based on fighting strength alone?
No. We factored in combat ability, but also character development, plot importance and overall fan reception, since the Straw Hats aren't just a fighting squad.
Does everyone agree Luffy and Zoro are the top two?
Pretty much, yes. It's one of the few things most One Piece fans don't argue about, even if they argue about everything else.
