Attack on Titan Characters Tier List, Ranked

Attack on Titan has one of the deepest casts in anime, which is exactly why ranking it is a fight waiting to happen. We've gone through thirteen of the series' most talked-about names, from Scouts to Warriors to the ones caught in between, and sorted them by impact, writing, and how hard they hit when the story needs them to.

This isn't just vibes. It's built from what fans and critics keep saying across forums, reviews, and rewatch threads, with our own call where the arguments don't settle. Disagree? That's half the fun of this show. Make your own list and see how it holds up.

SS Tier: The pillars of the story

Levi Ackerman

Levi Ackerman

Humanity's strongest soldier is also the show's best-choreographed reason to watch the fight scenes twice. Beyond the ODM gear mastery, it's the restraint, the way he processes grief in the Kenny arc and the Erwin decision, that makes him more than a cool factor.

Eren Yeager

Eren Yeager

Love him or despise where he ends up, Eren is the engine the whole plot runs on. His slide from a kid yelling about killing every Titan to the person making the final call on Paradis' fate is one of the boldest character turns in modern anime, and it splits fans hard, which is sort of the point.

Mikasa Ackerman

Mikasa Ackerman

Mikasa gets unfairly flattened into just "the strong bodyguard" early on, but the later arcs give her an actual question to wrestle with: who is she without Eren? That scarf means more by the finale than it has any right to.

AA Tier: Can't imagine the show without them

Armin Arlert

Armin Arlert

The brains of the operation, and the one whose growth from the kid everyone protects to the guy running strategy against Marley is some of the most satisfying payoff in the series. The Colossal Titan swap is still one of the show's best gut-punch twists.

Erwin Smith
Image: Attack on Titan Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Erwin Smith

The Commander who sends people to die and never pretends it's clean. His speech before the charge against the Beast Titan is the kind of scene people quote years later, and his death still gets argued about on principle.

Hange Zoë

Hange Zoë

Titan-obsessed comic relief early on, genuinely great leader by the end. Hange's arc works because the humor never erases the competence, and when the weight of command finally lands on them, it hits harder for the contrast.

Reiner Braun

Reiner Braun

The Armored Titan carries one of the heaviest emotional arcs in the series, a soldier broken by guilt who still drags himself back onto the battlefield. His fights with Eren are some of the show's best, and his slow unraveling into Warrior Chief status makes him one of the most tragic figures in the cast. He lands just below the top tier because his earlier seasons lean more on mystery than depth, but once his backstory hits, he becomes unforgettable.

Zeke Yeager

Zeke Yeager

The Beast Titan brings one of the sharpest minds in the series, turning the battlefield into a chess match with his shifter-controlling scream and ruthless tactics. His tangled motives, from the euthanization plan to his twisted bond with Eren, make him one of the most complex antagonists the story has. He lands in A tier for being a brilliant strategist whose personal tragedy adds real weight to the war.

Kenny Ackerman

Kenny Ackerman

The Ripper brings a gunslinger swagger and a surprisingly deep backstory that reframes the entire Ackerman mythos. His bond with Levi, his bitter philosophy on titans and power, and his brutal fight choreography make him one of the most memorable side villains in the series. He doesn't headline the story but he steals every scene he's in, easily earning a spot near the top of the A tier crowd.

Pieck Finger

Pieck Finger

The Cart Titan brings brains over brawn, using stamina and clever tactics to outlast enemies instead of overpowering them. Pieck's quiet loyalty to her comrades and her sharp read of every battlefield make her one of the most underrated players on the board. She lands in A tier for turning a seemingly weak titan form into a genuine tactical asset.

BB Tier: Strong, memorable, a notch below the top

Annie Leonhart
Image: Attack on Titan Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Annie Leonhart

A villain with real interiority, which is rare. The Female Titan arc through the forest is some of the best tension the show ever builds, and Annie's refusal to just explain herself keeps her compelling even stuck in crystal for most of the back half.

Jean Kirstein

Jean Kirstein

Started as the guy everyone wanted to slap, ended as one of the most quietly reliable people in the Scouts. Jean's arc is less flashy than most on this list, which is exactly why it holds up so well on a rewatch.

Historia Reiss

Historia Reiss

Her arc gets rushed in a way a lot of fans still bring up, but the core idea, the sweet mask cracking into someone who actually chooses her own path, lands when the show gives it room. The throne scene is the clearest she ever gets to be herself.

Ymir
Image: Attack on Titan Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Ymir

A hundred years of history packed into one of the show's saddest side stories. Ymir's devotion to Historia and her own buried past make her one of those characters you wish had gotten another season just for her.

Bertolt Hoover

Bertolt Hoover

The Colossal Titan himself, a quiet giant crushed by guilt and loyalty to Reiner. His arc pays off hard in the Scout fight, but his constant hesitation and breakdowns keep him a notch below the Warriors he fought alongside. Still, that final transformation over Trost cements his place in the show's history.

Gabi Braun
Image: Attack on Titan Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Gabi Braun

Gabi starts off as one of the most hated characters in the series thanks to her fanatic Marleyan upbringing and the Sasha incident, but her arc gives her real growth by the end. She earns a B tier slot for that development even if a lot of fans never fully forgave her early actions. Her bond with Falco and her slow realization of the truth make her one of the more complete redemption stories in the cast.

CC Tier: Solid but overshadowed

Sasha Blouse
Image: Attack on Titan Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Sasha Blouse

Potato girl energy carries a long way, and Sasha's comic relief is genuinely funny, but she spends a lot of the series as a supporting presence rather than a driver of the plot. Her death still landed as one of the show's most mourned, for what that's worth.

Connie Springer
Image: Attack on Titan Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Connie Springer

Connie's village arc, finding out what happened to his hometown, is a quietly brutal moment the show doesn't dwell on nearly as long as it deserves. Outside of that, he mostly stays in the background of the 104th squad.

Marco Bott
Image: Attack on Titan Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Marco Bott

Marco never got the arc he deserved before being cut down early, so his tier reflects potential more than payoff. He was the moral compass of the 104th, the guy who called out Jean's selfishness and tried to keep the group grounded. A solid, likable presence, but his screen time was too short to climb any higher.

DD Tier: Underused or undercooked

Petra Ral
Image: Attack on Titan Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Petra Ral

Petra gets more fan sympathy than screen time really earns her, mostly because her death during the Female Titan arc is so abrupt. She's likable in the little we see, but there just isn't enough there to rank her higher.

How we ranked them

We weighed narrative importance, how well the character's arc actually pays off, and the strength of their defining moments (the kind that get clipped and reposted for years). We also factored in broader fan and critic consensus pulled from discussions and reviews, breaking ties with our own judgment where the fandom is genuinely split, and Levi discourse never ends.

FAQ

Who is the most popular Attack on Titan character?

Levi Ackerman consistently tops popularity polls and fan rankings, largely thanks to his fight choreography and dry, no-nonsense personality.

Is Eren Yeager a villain or a hero?

He's deliberately both, which is why fans argue about him so much. The back half of the series pushes him into villain territory while still framing his motivations as understandable.

Why do fans love Erwin Smith so much?

His willingness to make brutal, costly decisions for the Scouts, paired with his honesty about the cost, makes him one of the show's most respected leaders.

Is Historia Reiss underrated?

A lot of fans think so. Her arc gets compressed compared to others, but what's there, especially her break from the submissive role she was raised into, is well regarded.

Does Mikasa get enough character development?

It's debated. Early on she's mostly defined by her loyalty to Eren, but later arcs give her more interiority, especially around what she wants for herself after the war.
