Transformers Movies Ranked: Every Film From Worst to Best
Nine movies, one giant robot franchise, and a wild range of quality. We're ranking the original 1986 animated film, all the Bay-era blockbusters, and the newer wave of Transformers movies that actually remembered to write characters.
This list leans on what fans argue about on forums and what critics landed on in their reviews, with our own tiebreaker when the room is split (and with this franchise, the room is always split). Think we buried a favorite or let a stinker off easy? That's half the fun of a tier list. Make your own.

SS Tier: The best this franchise has ever been

Bumblebee
This is the one that proved a Transformers movie could have an actual heart. Swap the demolition-derby chaos for a coming-of-age story set in 1987, and suddenly you care about a girl and her alien car. Charlie fixing up Bumblebee in her garage does more emotional work than five Bay movies combined.
About Bumblebee
A prequel/spinoff set in 1987, following a teenage girl named Charlie who befriends the Autobot Bumblebee. Directed by Travis Knight and praised for its emotional core.
- Released
- 2018
- Director
- Travis Knight

The Transformers: The Movie
The original. Unicron, Orson Welles' last role, that soundtrack full of '80s hair-metal anthems, and the single most traumatic afternoon of many childhoods when Optimus Prime actually died. It's dated in places, but it has a soul the later films chase and rarely catch.
About The Transformers: The Movie
An animated film from 1986 that served as a bridge between seasons of the original cartoon series. Known for killing off Optimus Prime and introducing Unicron, voiced by Orson Welles.
- Released
- 1986
- Format
- Animated

Transformers One
A prequel nobody asked for that turned out to be one of the best entries in the whole franchise. Watching Orion Pax and D-16 go from best friends to Optimus Prime and Megatron gives the Autobot/Decepticon split actual tragedy instead of just factory-default good guys versus bad guys.
About Transformers One
An animated prequel exploring the origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron on Cybertron, before they became enemies. Voiced by Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry.
- Released
- 2024
- Format
- Animated
AA Tier: Genuinely good, no apologies needed

Transformers (2007)
Say what you want about everything that came after, the first one still mostly works. Shia LaBeouf's Sam Witwicky selling a car to Bumblebee, the reveal in the backyard at night, Optimus Prime's first lines. Michael Bay's spectacle hadn't curdled into noise yet.
About Transformers (2007)
Directed by Michael Bay, this live-action film introduced the Autobots and Decepticons to a new generation. Stars Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox.
- Released
- 2007
- Director
- Michael Bay

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
Brings in the Maximals and Predacons and actually gives the human leads, Noah and Elena, something to do besides scream and run. Set in 1994 with a genuinely fun hip-hop soundtrack, it feels like the franchise finally learning from its mistakes.
About Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
Set in 1994, this film introduces the Maximals and Predacons alongside the Autobots. Follows on from Bumblebee's continuity.
- Released
- 2023
- Director
- Steven Caple Jr.
BB Tier: Solid, flawed, still fun

Transformers: Dark of the Moon
The Chicago battle in the third act is still some of the best large-scale robot carnage Bay ever shot. The space-race conspiracy plot and Shia LaBeouf's increasingly unhinged performance get you there, even if the runtime overstays its welcome.
About Transformers: Dark of the Moon
The third Bay-directed film, tying the Transformers' arrival on Earth to the Space Race and a secret on the dark side of the moon. Features a large-scale Chicago battle sequence.
- Released
- 2011
- Director
- Michael Bay
CC Tier: Fine if it's on TV

Transformers: Age of Extinction
Mark Wahlberg replaces Shia LaBeouf and the Dinobots show up, which should be a win. Instead you get a bloated nearly three-hour runtime, a bounty hunter subplot, and so much product placement it starts to feel like a car commercial with explosions.
About Transformers: Age of Extinction
The fourth film and a soft reboot of the human cast, starring Mark Wahlberg. Introduces the Dinobots and a new human-led threat to the Transformers.
- Released
- 2014
- Director
- Michael Bay
DD Tier: A rough watch

Transformers: The Last Knight
King Arthur, Merlin, and Nazis get thrown into a Transformers movie like someone was throwing ideas at a wall. The plot barely holds together and Anthony Hopkins seems to be having more fun than anyone watching it.
About Transformers: The Last Knight
The fifth Bay film, weaving in Arthurian legend and World War II history alongside the ongoing robot war. Stars Mark Wahlberg and Anthony Hopkins.
- Released
- 2017
- Director
- Michael Bay
FF Tier: The low point

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Widely considered the franchise's low point, and the consensus is right. Skids and Mudflap's cringeworthy comic relief, a plot that makes no sense even by robot-alien-war standards, and a runtime that feels endless. Even Bay has admitted this one didn't work.
About Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
The second live-action film, continuing Sam Witwicky's story as he's pulled back into the Autobot/Decepticon war. Widely cited as the series' weakest critical point.
- Released
- 2009
- Director
- Michael Bay
How we ranked them
We weighed story and character work, how the robot action actually reads on screen, humor that lands versus humor that embarrasses everyone, and how each film holds up on a rewatch once the hype has faded. Nostalgia counts for something, but it doesn't save a movie that's genuinely a mess. Consensus from fan communities and critic reviews drove most placements, with ties broken by our own judgment.

Rank these yourselfFAQ
What is the best Transformers movie?
By fan and critic consensus, Bumblebee and the original 1986 animated film The Transformers: The Movie top most rankings, with Transformers One right alongside them as the newest entry to earn that praise.
What is the worst Transformers movie?
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is widely considered the weakest entry, criticized for its humor, pacing, and messy plot.
Are the Transformers movies connected in order?
The main Michael Bay series (2007 through The Last Knight) is one continuous story. Bumblebee is a prequel/soft reboot, Rise of the Beasts follows Bumblebee's timeline, and Transformers One is set long before any of them on Cybertron.
Is Transformers One a kids movie?
It's animated and family-friendly, but it's also been praised for emotional depth that appeals to longtime adult fans, not just kids.
Do I need to watch the movies in release order?
Not really. Transformers One and Bumblebee work well as entry points since they're more self-contained, while the 2007 to 2017 Bay films should be watched in their release order for the ongoing plot.
