Star Wars Characters Tier List: Every Major Character Ranked
A galaxy far, far away has given us nearly fifty years of heroes, villains, droids, and at least one Hutt. We pulled together 36 of the most talked-about characters from the movies and (in a few cases) the shows that built on them, and ranked them based on what fans and critics actually argue about online.
Some of this is obvious. Some of it will make people mad. That's the fun of it. Where the fandom is genuinely split, like Padmé or Jar Jar, we say so and tell you which way we leaned and why. Disagree? That's what the comments are for.

SS Tier: The icons that define the saga

Darth Vader
The breathing alone does more character work than most villains manage in three acts. Vader's reveal in The Empire Strikes Back is still the line every other movie twist gets measured against, and his redemption in Return of the Jedi sticks the landing.
About Darth Vader
Originally Anakin Skywalker, a Jedi Knight who turned to the dark side and became the Galactic Empire's enforcer. First appeared in Star Wars (1977).
- First appearance
- Star Wars (1977)
- Played by
- David Prowse (physical), James Earl Jones (voice)

Yoda
900 years old and he still steals every scene he's in, whether he's lifting an X-wing out of a swamp or flipping around with a lightsaber in the prequels. The backwards speech pattern should be annoying by now. It isn't.
About Yoda
Grand Master of the Jedi Order, known for his unusual speech pattern and immense Force abilities despite his small size.
- First appearance
- The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
- Species
- Unnamed, same as Grogu

Han Solo
Shot first, loved hardest. Han is the reason the original trilogy has a sense of humor, and his arc from smuggler to general to father makes The Force Awakens hurt the way it's supposed to.
About Han Solo
A roguish smuggler and captain of the Millennium Falcon who becomes a key hero of the Rebel Alliance. His journey from cynical mercenary to committed Rebel general spans the original and sequel trilogies.
- Introduced
- A New Hope (1977)
- Played by
- Harrison Ford
- Affiliation
- Rebel Alliance, Resistance

Princess Leia
She's rescuing herself before Luke and Han finish their rescue plan, and that tells you everything. Leia holds the Rebellion, the prequel-era politics, and two trilogies' worth of grief together without ever becoming a prop.
About Princess Leia
A leader of the Rebel Alliance and later the Resistance, known for her sharp wit and determination. She is the twin sister of Luke Skywalker and daughter of Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala.
- Introduced
- A New Hope (1977)
- Played by
- Carrie Fisher
- Affiliation
- Rebel Alliance, Resistance

Obi-Wan Kenobi
From wise old hermit to tragic failed mentor, Obi-Wan works in every era he shows up in. "That's no moon" and "hello there" are both doing a lot of heavy lifting for the character's legacy.
About Obi-Wan Kenobi
A Jedi Master who trains Anakin Skywalker and later mentors Luke Skywalker, playing a pivotal role across the prequel and original trilogies. He also stars in his own Disney+ series set between the two trilogies.
- Introduced
- A New Hope (1977)
- Played by
- Alec Guinness (original trilogy), Ewan McGregor (prequels and series)
- Affiliation
- Jedi Order
AA Tier: Fan favorites with real staying power

Luke Skywalker
The original trilogy's farm boy to Jedi arc is the backbone of the whole saga, even if his Last Jedi portrayal split the fandom down the middle. We land on: flawed, aged hermit Luke still earns his final walk into legend.
About Luke Skywalker
A farm boy from Tatooine who becomes the last Jedi Knight of his generation and a central hero of the original trilogy. He later trains a new generation of Jedi before retreating into exile, as seen in the sequel trilogy.
- Introduced
- A New Hope (1977)
- Played by
- Mark Hamill
- Affiliation
- Rebel Alliance, Jedi Order

Emperor Palpatine
Patient, theatrical, and genuinely terrifying in the throne room scene with Luke. His Rise of Skywalker comeback is the one thing everyone agrees was a stretch, but that doesn't undo decades of being the saga's best manipulator.
About Emperor Palpatine
The Dark Lord of the Sith also known as Darth Sidious, who engineers the fall of the Galactic Republic and rises to rule the Galactic Empire. He serves as the overarching villain across much of the Star Wars saga.
- Introduced
- The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
- Played by
- Ian McDiarmid
- Affiliation
- Sith, Galactic Empire

Chewbacca
Loyalty with fur and a crossbow. Chewie never says a word of English and somehow has more emotional range than half the cast, especially in that silent medal ceremony moment.
About Chewbacca
A Wookiee warrior from the planet Kashyyyk, best known as Han Solo's loyal co-pilot aboard the Millennium Falcon. He fights alongside the Rebel Alliance and later the Resistance.
- Introduced
- A New Hope (1977)
- Played by
- Peter Mayhew (original trilogy), Joonas Suotamo (later films)
- Species
- Wookiee

R2-D2
A trash can full of secrets who's been quietly steering the entire plot since 1977. R2 carries the Death Star plans, Obi-Wan's message, and a lightsaber across multiple films, and he does it with beeps.
About R2-D2
A resourceful astromech droid known for his beeping communication and bravery, serving various owners including Anakin Skywalker and Luke Skywalker across generations. He is one of the few characters to appear in all mainline saga films.
- Introduced
- A New Hope (1977)
- Type
- Astromech droid

Ahsoka Tano
Started as a divisive padawan in The Clone Wars and grew into one of the franchise's best-written adults. Her arc from Anakin's apprentice to wandering survivor is some of the strongest material Star Wars has produced outside the films.
About Ahsoka Tano
Once the Jedi Padawan of Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka leaves the Jedi Order after being falsely accused of a crime, going on to become a key figure in the Rebellion and beyond. Her arc across Clone Wars, Rebels, and live-action spans decades of Star Wars history.
- First appearance
- Star Wars: The Clone Wars film (2008)
- Voiced by
- Ashley Eckstein
- Played by (live-action)
- Rosario Dawson

Darth Maul
Barely speaks in The Phantom Menace and still became one of the most iconic lightsaber duelists in the franchise. His expanded role in the animated shows gave him a real tragedy to go with the double-bladed saber.
About Darth Maul
A Sith apprentice to Darth Sidious, known for his double-bladed red lightsaber and menacing horned appearance. He first appears in the prequel trilogy and later returns in animated series such as The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels.
- Introduced
- The Phantom Menace (1999)
- Played by
- Ray Park
- Affiliation
- Sith

Rey
Strong in The Force Awakens, stronger in The Rise of Skywalker's final duel with Palpatine. Fans argue about how fast her power grows, but as a central lead carrying three films she holds up.
About Rey
A scavenger from the desert planet Jakku who discovers she is strong with the Force. She becomes a central protagonist of the sequel trilogy, training under Luke Skywalker and later Leia Organa.
- Introduced
- The Force Awakens (2015)
- Played by
- Daisy Ridley
- Affiliation
- Resistance, Jedi

Kylo Ren
Messy on purpose. Kylo's tantrums and his genuine pull toward both sides make him more interesting than a clean villain would be, and the throne room fight with Rey is one of the sequel trilogy's best scenes.
About Kylo Ren
Born Ben Solo, the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, he turns to the dark side and becomes a leader of the Knights of Ren and later Supreme Leader of the First Order. He is the primary antagonist of the sequel trilogy.
- Introduced
- The Force Awakens (2015)
- Played by
- Adam Driver
- Affiliation
- First Order, Knights of Ren

Boba Fett
A handful of lines in the original trilogy turned into one of the most merchandised characters in the franchise, which says more about mystique than screen time. The Mandalorian era gave him a real character to match the helmet.
About Boba Fett
A notorious bounty hunter clad in Mandalorian armor, raised as the unaltered clone of his father Jango Fett. He appears in the original trilogy and later becomes the focus of his own Disney+ series, The Book of Boba Fett.
- Introduced
- The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
- Played by
- Temuera Morrison (later appearances)
- Affiliation
- Bounty hunter

Padmé Amidala
Sharp, politically savvy, and frankly deserved a better written romance than the one the prequels gave her. Fans are split on whether she was failed by the scripts, and honestly, yes, she was, but the character underneath is solid.
About Padmé Amidala
The Queen and later Senator of Naboo, who falls in love with and secretly marries Anakin Skywalker, becoming the mother of Luke and Leia. Her political idealism and tragic fate are central to the prequel trilogy's arc.
- First appearance
- Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999)
- Played by
- Natalie Portman
- Role
- Queen/Senator of Naboo
BB Tier: Solid and memorable, just not legendary

C-3PO
Anxious, fussy, and somehow always in the room when something important happens. 3PO's comic relief holds up, even if he's mostly there to translate and panic.
About C-3PO
A protocol droid fluent in millions of forms of communication, known for his anxious personality and loyalty to his companions. He appears throughout the entire Star Wars saga alongside R2-D2.
- Introduced
- A New Hope (1977)
- Played by
- Anthony Daniels
- Type
- Protocol droid

The Mandalorian (Din Djarin)
A man of few words and a strict creed, built almost entirely on quiet competence and his bond with Grogu. Works best as a TV lead rather than a movie-sized icon, which is exactly what he was built for.
About The Mandalorian (Din Djarin)
A lone bounty hunter following the Mandalorian creed who becomes the surrogate father and protector of Grogu. His journey across the galaxy's outer reaches anchors the Disney+ series that bears his title.
- First appearance
- The Mandalorian (2019)
- Played by
- Pedro Pascal
- Creed
- Children of the Watch (Mandalorian)

Grogu
Impossibly cute and a genuine merchandising phenomenon, though let's be honest, most of his appeal is the face and the Force powers rather than deep characterization. Doesn't need much more than that.
About Grogu
A Force-sensitive member of Yoda's unidentified species, known affectionately as 'Baby Yoda,' who becomes the ward of the Mandalorian Din Djarin. His charm and mysterious Force abilities made him a cultural phenomenon upon the show's debut.
- First appearance
- The Mandalorian (2019)
- Species
- Same as Yoda (unidentified)
- Notable trait
- Force-sensitive

Lando Calrissian
Smooth-talking, morally gray, and the guy who both betrays and redeems himself in the same movie. Lando's cape game remains undefeated.
About Lando Calrissian
A charismatic gambler and former smuggler who becomes Baron Administrator of Cloud City before joining the Rebellion. His betrayal and later redemption, including flying the Millennium Falcon at the Battle of Endor, make him one of the saga's most colorful figures.
- First appearance
- Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
- Played by
- Billy Dee Williams
- Role
- Smuggler, Rebel general

Jango Fett
The template, literally, for an army of clones and for his own son Boba. Attack of the Clones doesn't give him a ton of depth, but the bounty hunter cool factor is there.
About Jango Fett
A skilled Mandalorian bounty hunter who serves as the unmodified genetic template for the Republic's clone army. Father (via cloning) to Boba Fett, he is killed by Mace Windu at the Battle of Geonosis.
- First appearance
- Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (2002)
- Played by
- Temuera Morrison
- Role
- Bounty hunter, clone template

Mace Windu
A purple lightsaber and a no-nonsense attitude go a long way. His fall from the Senate building window is one of the prequels' most-remembered moments, for better or worse.
About Mace Windu
A senior member of the Jedi Council renowned for his mastery of the purple-bladed lightsaber and the aggressive Vaapad fighting form. He plays a central role in the Clone Wars and in the attempt to arrest Chancellor Palpatine.
- First appearance
- Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999)
- Played by
- Samuel L. Jackson
- Role
- Jedi Master, Jedi Council member

Qui-Gon Jinn
The maverick Jedi who found Anakin and paid for his instincts with his life. He doesn't get much runtime, but he sets the entire prequel trilogy in motion.
About Qui-Gon Jinn
A maverick Jedi Master who discovers young Anakin Skywalker on Tatooine and champions his training despite the Council's doubts. His death at the hands of Darth Maul sets the stage for Obi-Wan Kenobi's path as a Jedi Knight.
- First appearance
- Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999)
- Played by
- Liam Neeson
- Role
- Jedi Master

Finn
A stormtrooper who deserts and becomes a Resistance fighter is a great premise, and his chemistry with Poe and Rey carries a lot of the sequels. Fans wanted more for him by the trilogy's end, and that's a fair complaint.
About Finn
Former First Order stormtrooper, originally designated FN-2187, who defects after refusing to follow orders during a massacre. He becomes a key member of the Resistance in the sequel trilogy.
- Introduced
- The Force Awakens (2015)
- Played by
- John Boyega
- Affiliation
- First Order (formerly), Resistance

Poe Dameron
A hotshot pilot with a growth arc into an actual leader. The Last Jedi's mutiny subplot is divisive, but it gave Poe more to do than just fly well.
About Poe Dameron
A daring ace pilot for the Resistance who rises to a leadership role across the sequel trilogy. His brash confidence and piloting skill make him one of the Resistance's most capable commanders.
- First appearance
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
- Played by
- Oscar Isaac
- Role
- Resistance pilot and commander

BB-8
A rolling ball of personality that somehow became as recognizable as R2-D2 within one movie. The thumbs-up gag never gets old.
About BB-8
A spherical astromech droid introduced in the sequel trilogy, serving as Poe Dameron's loyal companion. Known for carrying a vital piece of a map to Luke Skywalker's location in The Force Awakens.
- First appearance
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
- Type
- Astromech droid
- Affiliation
- Resistance

Grand Admiral Thrawn
A tactical genius whose reputation comes mostly from novels and animated shows rather than the films, which makes him a favorite for the deep-cut fans specifically. Cold, calculating, and always a few moves ahead.
About Grand Admiral Thrawn
A brilliant and calculating Imperial strategist from the Chiss species, originally introduced in Timothy Zahn's novels and later brought into canon through Star Wars Rebels. Renowned for analyzing enemies through their art and culture to predict and defeat them.
- First appearance
- Heir to the Empire novel (1991); Star Wars Rebels (2017) in canon
- Voiced by
- Lars Mikkelsen (Rebels)
- Affiliation
- Galactic Empire

Jyn Erso
Rogue One gave her a real arc from reluctant recruit to someone willing to die for the cause, and the ending makes that sacrifice land. Doesn't get the multi-film run other characters do, but makes her one shot count.
About Jyn Erso
The protagonist of Rogue One, daughter of Death Star architect Galen Erso, who leads the mission to steal the plans that enable the Death Star's destruction. Hardened by a fractured upbringing, she becomes a reluctant but determined Rebel hero.
- First appearance
- Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
- Played by
- Felicity Jones
- Role
- Rebel operative

K-2SO
Blunt, sarcastic, and the funniest part of Rogue One by a wide margin. Reprogrammed Imperial droids giving dry one-liners should be a whole subgenre.
About K-2SO
A reprogrammed Imperial security droid who becomes a key ally to Cassian Andor in Rogue One. Known for his blunt, deadpan humor and unwavering loyalty, he sacrifices himself to help the Rebels steal the Death Star plans.
- First appearance
- Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
- Voiced/performed by
- Alan Tudyk
- Type
- Reprogrammed KX-series security droid
CC Tier: Cool concept, thin execution

Count Dooku
A compelling idea, a fallen Jedi turned Sith, that never quite gets the screen time to pay off. Christopher Lee's gravitas carries more weight than the script does.
About Count Dooku
A former Jedi Master turned Sith Lord, also known as Darth Tyranus, who leads the Separatist movement against the Republic. His elegant fighting style and philosophical justification for his fall make him a distinctive prequel villain.
- First appearance
- Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (2002)
- Played by
- Christopher Lee
- Sith name
- Darth Tyranus

General Grievous
Four lightsabers and a cool cough should be a slam dunk, but he ends up more spectacle than character. Great design, thin writing.
About General Grievous
The cybernetic Supreme Commander of the droid armies during the Clone Wars, infamous for collecting the lightsabers of Jedi he has defeated. His coughing, menacing presence makes him a standout villain of the prequel era.
- First appearance
- Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2003 microseries)
- Species
- Kaleesh (cyborg)
- Affiliation
- Confederacy of Independent Systems

Jabba the Hutt
Gross, menacing, and visually unforgettable, but functionally more of a set piece than a character with an arc. His palace is the memorable part, not much else.
About Jabba the Hutt
A powerful and grotesque crime lord who controls much of the galaxy's underworld from his palace on Tatooine. Known for holding Han Solo in carbonite and for his eventual death at the hands of Princess Leia.
- First appearance
- Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983)
- Species
- Hutt
- Role
- Crime lord

Grand Moff Tarkin
Icy, commanding, and willing to blow up a planet to make a point. Effective in Rogue One and A New Hope, but he's a function of the plot more than a fully realized person.
About Grand Moff Tarkin
A ruthless and ambitious Imperial officer who oversees the construction and deployment of the first Death Star. His cold pragmatism and command over Darth Vader make him one of the Empire's most formidable figures in the original trilogy.
- First appearance
- Star Wars: A New Hope (1977)
- Played by
- Peter Cushing
- Affiliation
- Galactic Empire

Admiral Ackbar
"It's a trap!" is doing a lot of the heavy lifting for a character who otherwise doesn't get much to do beyond barking orders on a bridge.
About Admiral Ackbar
A Mon Calamari military leader famous for commanding the Rebel Alliance fleet at the Battle of Endor. Remembered for his iconic line warning of an Imperial trap.
- First appearance
- Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983)
- Species
- Mon Calamari
- Affiliation
- Rebel Alliance

Cassian Andor
Rogue One sketches him as a morally compromised Rebel operative with real potential, and the show built around him has deepened that reputation considerably since. On the film alone, though, he's solid rather than spectacular.
About Cassian Andor
A dedicated Rebel intelligence officer whose morally complex journey is central to Rogue One and the Andor series. His willingness to make hard sacrifices for the cause highlights the darker, grittier side of the Rebellion.
- First appearance
- Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
- Played by
- Diego Luna
- Role
- Rebel Alliance intelligence officer

Captain Phasma
All that chrome armor and barely any screen time to back it up. Fans were promised a major new villain and got a glorified cameo across two films.
About Captain Phasma
A chrome-armored commander of the First Order's stormtrooper forces, introduced in the sequel trilogy. Known for her imposing presence and striking silver armor, though her screen time and impact were often considered limited relative to her design.
- First appearance
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
- Played by
- Gwendoline Christie
- Affiliation
- First Order
FF Tier: The one everybody argues about

Jar Jar Binks
The most argued-about character in the entire franchise, and not in a good way. Some fans have tried to reclaim him as secretly tragic, but the broad consensus from 1999 on has never really changed: he's the Star Wars character people love to hate most.
About Jar Jar Binks
A Gungan from the planet Naboo who becomes an ally of the Jedi in the prequel trilogy, and later a Galactic Senator.
- First appearance
- The Phantom Menace (1999)
- Played by
- Ahmed Best
How we ranked them
We weighed cultural impact, how well the character is written, their effect on the plot across the saga, and how fans and critics talk about them now, not just at release. A character who's iconic in one film but thin everywhere else ranks lower than one who holds up across appearances. We also factored in rewatch value: does the character still work on your tenth viewing, or was the magic mostly nostalgia?

Rank these yourselfFAQ
Who is the most popular Star Wars character of all time?
Darth Vader is usually cited as the most iconic and widely recognized Star Wars character, thanks to his design, voice, and the reveal in The Empire Strikes Back.

Fans generally point to his slapstick comic relief style clashing with the tone of The Phantom Menace, plus frustration that a major new character in the prequels wasn't given more substance.
Is Rey too powerful, according to fans?
This is one of the most debated topics in the fandom. Some feel her rapid growth in the Force skips earned struggle, while others point to her isolated upbringing and latent lineage as justification.
Who is considered the best Star Wars villain?

Is Grogu the same character as Yoda?
No. Grogu is the same species as Yoda but confirmed to be a separate individual introduced in The Mandalorian.
