Scream Movies Tier List: All 7 Ranked

Ghostface has been stabbing his way through Woodsboro (and beyond) for decades now, and not every sequel earned the mask. We ranked all seven Scream movies from the original slasher-satire masterpiece down to the one that even die-hard fans struggle to defend.

This list leans on what horror forums, critics and longtime fans mostly agree on, with our own take thrown in wherever the arguments get heated. And they do get heated. Disagree with where we put Scream 3 or the 2022 "requel"? That's half the fun. Rank it yourself and see where you land.

Scream (1996)

Wes Craven didn't just make a slasher movie, he made the slasher movie that explained itself while still scaring the hell out of you. Drew Barrymore's opening phone call is still one of the great cold opens in horror, and Randy's rules-of-survival speech turned the genre's cliches into the plot itself. Thirty years on, nothing else in the franchise has matched its wit or its body count's emotional weight.

About Scream (1996)

Directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson, this is the film that kicked off the franchise and reinvigorated the slasher genre by making fun of its own rules. It stars Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, alongside Courteney Cox and David Arquette.

Scream (2022)

Against all odds, the 'requel' actually worked. Bringing back Sidney, Gale and Dewey while handing the story to a new generation felt less like a cash grab and more like a genuine continuation, with Ghostface going after 'toxic fandom' in a way that felt pointed rather than cheap. Mindy's meta-commentary basically does Randy's job for the 2020s, and it earns the laugh.

About Scream (2022)

A legacy sequel, sometimes called a 'requel,' that brings back Sidney, Gale and Dewey alongside a new cast, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.

Scream 2

Sequels are never as good as the original, Randy warns us, then this movie goes and proves him almost wrong. The opening theater massacre is a stone-cold classic set piece, and Jada Pinkett Smith's death still makes horror fans wince on rewatch. It loses a notch for sagging a bit in the middle, but the body count and the Cotton Weary reveal keep it close to the top.

About Scream 2

The first sequel, set at Sidney's college campus, where a new Ghostface targets her and her friends again. Known for its theater-set opening kill and the Cotton Weary subplot.

Scream VI

Moving Ghostface to New York was a gamble that paid off, giving the series its best setting change since the original left Woodsboro at all. The subway scene with the masked killers crammed in with commuters is genuinely tense, and killing off a legacy character early sent a real jolt through the fanbase. Dropping the 'rules' framing a bit lets it breathe as its own thing.

About Scream VI

Moves the action out of Woodsboro for the first time, following the surviving core cast to New York City as Ghostface strikes again.

Scream 4

Craven's return after an 11-year gap is smarter than its reputation suggests, skewering reboot culture and social-media fame years before that became every horror movie's go-to target. The problem is pacing: it takes too long setting up its new cast before Sidney's story gets room to matter. Still, the twist ending is one of the meaner, more memorable ones in the series.

About Scream 4

Released after an 11-year gap, this entry brings Sidney back to Woodsboro and introduces a new generation of potential victims, tackling remake and social-media culture.

Scream 3

Scream 3

The one where the franchise ran out of script, literally, since the plot centers on a movie-within-a-movie that never fully clicks. Trading Woodsboro for Hollywood soundstages drains a lot of the series' small-town dread, and the killer's motive leans on a retcon that fans still argue about. Not unwatchable, just the weakest link of the original trilogy by a wide margin.

About Scream 3

The trilogy closer, set in Hollywood during the production of a film-within-the-film based on the Woodsboro murders. Often cited as the weakest entry of the original run.

Scream 7

The film was released on February 27, 2026, so the claim about it being unreleased is outdated. Additionally, Neve Campbell's return was not scrapped; she returned to the franchise for this film. Director changes did occur: Christopher Landon was originally set to direct but was replaced by Kevin Williamson. Fans are wary rather than excited, and until it actually proves itself, it sits here on reputation alone.

About Scream 7

The film has already been released (February 27, 2026), so it is no longer upcoming. It did undergo notable behind-the-scenes changes including cast and director shifts: Melissa Barrera was fired, Jenna Ortega exited, and Christopher Landon was replaced as director by Kevin Williamson.

How we ranked them

We weighed how each movie balances scares, mystery and the series' trademark self-aware humor, plus kill quality, legacy-character use and how well the twist actually lands. We leaned heavily on where horror fan communities and critics broadly agree, then used our own judgment to break ties where the fandom is genuinely split, like Scream 3 versus Scream 4.
