Pirates of the Caribbean Movies, Ranked Worst to Best

Five movies, one very tipsy compass, and a franchise that went from "surprisingly great pirate movie" to "wait, there are how many now?" We're ranking all five Pirates of the Caribbean films based on what fans and critics have argued about for years: the plot sprawl, the charm of Jack Sparrow, and whether anyone actually understands what happens in At World's End.

This reflects the broad consensus from reviews and fan discussions, with our own take where people can't agree. And people really can't agree on the middle of this list, so expect some pushback. Rank them yourself and see where you land.

SS Tier: The real treasure

The Curse of the Black Pearl

The Curse of the Black Pearl

The one that didn't need to be good and still is. Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow was a genuine surprise back in 2003, a drunk, scheming weirdo nobody expected to anchor a Disney blockbuster, and the ghost-pirate curse gimmick (skeletons in moonlight, gold coins and all) still looks great. Tight story, real stakes, and Geoffrey Rush's Barbossa is one of the best pirate villains put on screen.

About The Curse of the Black Pearl

The 2003 film that launched the franchise, loosely inspired by the Disney theme park ride of the same name. It introduced Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, and Elizabeth Swann, and centers on a cursed pirate crew doomed to walk as skeletons under moonlight.

Davy Jones and his squid-face crew raised the bar the sequel had no business clearing. The Kraken, the three-way sword fight on the runaway water wheel, Bill Nighy acting entirely through CGI tentacles, it's a bigger movie than the first without losing the character work. Yes, it ends on a cliffhanger that annoyed people in theaters, but as the middle chapter of a trilogy it earns its scale.

About Dead Man's Chest

The 2006 sequel that introduces Davy Jones and the Flying Dutchman, ending on a cliffhanger that sets up At World's End. It became one of the highest-grossing films of its year.

AA Tier: Still worth the plunder

At World's End

At World's End

Messy, bloated, and overstuffed with pirate lords nobody asked for, but it still sticks the landing emotionally. The Singapore opening with Chow Yun-fat, the maelstrom final battle, Up Is Down, Calypso's whole deal, it's a lot, and fans are genuinely split on whether the plot ever fully makes sense. We land on the side that the ambition and the Will-Elizabeth payoff make it worth the confusion.

About At World's End

The 2007 finale to the original trilogy, bringing together pirate lords from around the world to battle the East India Trading Company. Features Chow Yun-fat as Captain Sao Feng.

CC Tier: Running out of wind

On Stranger Tides

On Stranger Tides

The franchise without its ensemble starts to show its age here. Dropping Will and Elizabeth for Jack and Penelope Cruz's Angelica sounded fine on paper, but the chemistry never quite lands, and mermaids and the Fountain of Youth can't replace an actual crew to care about. It's watchable, just the first sign the formula was running thin.

About On Stranger Tides

The 2011 fourth film, loosely based on Tim Powers' novel of the same name, sending Jack Sparrow on a quest for the Fountain of Youth. The first in the series without Orlando Bloom or Keira Knightley.

Released
2011
Director
Rob Marshall

DD Tier: Dead in the water

Dead Men Tell No Tales

Dead Men Tell No Tales

By this point even the ghosts look tired. Javier Bardem's Salazar is a decent villain stuck in a script that recycles beats from the first four films (another map, another magical artifact, another Sparrow family reveal) without doing much new with them. It made money, but it's the entry fans bring up when explaining why the series needed to stop.

About Dead Men Tell No Tales

The 2017 fifth film, introducing Javier Bardem's ghostly Captain Salazar as the villain hunting Jack Sparrow. Also known as Salazar's Revenge in some markets.

Released
2017
Director
Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg

How we ranked them

We weighed critical reception, how well each film holds up on rewatch, and how often fans actually bring it up fondly versus apologetically. Plot coherence mattered, but so did tone, chemistry between the cast, and whether the action set pieces still feel inventive rather than exhausting. Box office success is noted but didn't override quality.

FAQ

What is the best Pirates of the Caribbean movie?

The Curse of the Black Pearl is the consensus pick, with Dead Man's Chest right behind it. Both hold up as a tight, well-built pair.

What is the worst Pirates of the Caribbean movie?

Dead Men Tell No Tales is generally considered the weakest, seen as a retread of earlier films without a strong new hook.

Is At World's End worth watching if the plot is confusing?

Yes, most fans agree it's messy but still delivers a satisfying finale to the original trilogy, especially the ending for Will and Elizabeth.

Why did people react badly to On Stranger Tides?

It cut the original supporting cast (Will, Elizabeth, Norrington) and leaned entirely on Jack Sparrow, which many felt exposed how much the earlier films relied on the ensemble.

Are there more Pirates of the Caribbean movies coming?

As of October 2026, both a sequel and reboot have been confirmed. The sixth film was released in June 2026, and a reboot with new cast and storyline is in development.
