MCU Villains Tier List: Every Marvel Bad Guy Ranked

Fifteen-plus years of the MCU have given us gods, gangsters, scientists gone wrong, and one very tired Titan with a glove. Some of these villains reshaped how we think about blockbuster bad guys. Others showed up, said a menacing line or two, and got punched into a portal.

We ranked all 27 based on how well they work as characters, not just how powerful they are. Writing, motivation, screen time, and whether they actually threaten the hero all count. Disagree with where we put Kaecilius or Yellowjacket? That's half the fun. Rank them yourself and see how close you get.

Thanos

The snap changed what a Marvel villain could be: a guy with a plan, a philosophy, and the screen time across two films to actually sell it. Josh Brolin's performance makes the Mad Titan tragic instead of just scary, which is why 'I'm inevitable' still lands.

About Thanos

A Titan warlord obsessed with universal balance through mass culling, introduced in post-credits scenes before anchoring Infinity War and Endgame. Played by Josh Brolin.

First appearance
The Avengers (post-credits)
Actor
Josh Brolin
Killmonger

Killmonger

Michael B. Jordan plays a villain who's right about the problem and wrong about the solution, and Black Panther never lets you forget it. 'Bury me in the ocean' is the kind of line that sticks around long after the credits.

About Killmonger

Erik Stevens, Wakandan-American cousin of T'Challa, seeks the throne to arm oppressed people worldwide with Wakandan technology. Played by Michael B. Jordan in Black Panther.

Loki

Technically a villain only in his first outing, but that Avengers performance alone earns the spot, plus he spent a decade evolving into one of the richest characters Marvel has. The Chitauri army under Grand Central was never the point; Tom Hiddleston's smirk was.

About Loki

Asgardian god of mischief and Thor's adopted brother, introduced as the main antagonist of The Avengers before becoming a recurring antihero across films and his own Disney+ series. Played by Tom Hiddleston.

First appearance
Thor (2011)
Actor
Tom Hiddleston

AA Tier: Great villains, no notes needed

Hela

Hela

Cate Blanchett chews through Asgard with real relish, crushing Mjolnir like it's nothing within her first scene. She's not deep, but she's a blast, and Ragnarok's whole tone bends around her gleeful menace.

About Hela

Goddess of death and Odin's firstborn, exiled for her brutal conquests, who returns to claim the Asgardian throne. Played by Cate Blanchett in Thor: Ragnarok.

Red Skull

Red Skull

Hugo Weaving's Nazi-scientist-turned-cosmic-errand-boy is one of the more underrated arcs in the MCU, especially his quiet second act guarding the Soul Stone on Vormir. The faceless mask design still holds up.

About Red Skull

Johann Schmidt, a Nazi scientist transformed by an early super-soldier serum experiment, later becomes keeper of the Soul Stone on Vormir. Played by Hugo Weaving.

First appearance
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
Actor
Hugo Weaving
Agatha Harkness

Agatha Harkness

Kathryn Hahn turns a nosy neighbor into one of the best twists the MCU has pulled off, and 'Agatha All Along' became a legitimate earworm. She's catty, funny, and genuinely threatening once the mask comes off.

About Agatha Harkness

A centuries-old witch disguised as a nosy neighbor who manipulates Wanda Maximoff's reality-warping powers in WandaVision. Played by Kathryn Hahn.

Series
WandaVision (2021)
Actor
Kathryn Hahn
Vulture

Vulture

Michael Keaton grounds Spider-Man: Homecoming with a villain who feels like he lives in the same world as Peter Parker: a guy failed by the system who built wings out of alien tech. The dinner-table reveal is one of the best scares in the franchise.

About Vulture

Adrian Toomes, a salvage contractor who turns to alien-tech weapons dealing after losing a cleanup contract to Tony Stark. Played by Michael Keaton in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Gorr the God Butcher

Gorr the God Butcher

Christian Bale is genuinely unsettling as a man whose grief curdled into godslaughter, even if Love and Thunder's tone doesn't always know what to do with him. The shadow-world visuals are the best thing that movie has going.

About Gorr the God Butcher

A grieving father who acquires the Necrosword and vows to wipe out all gods in the universe. Played by Christian Bale in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)

High Evolutionary

High Evolutionary

Chukwudi Iwuji gives Guardians Vol. 3 a villain worthy of closing out the trilogy, a scientist obsessed with perfection who treats living creatures like failed prototypes. Counter-Earth alone makes him one of the more disturbing MCU creations.

About High Evolutionary

A scientist obsessed with creating a perfect species, responsible for Rocket Raccoon's origin and the horrors of Counter-Earth. Played by Chukwudi Iwuji.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)

Green Goblin

Green Goblin

Willem Dafoe reprising Norman Osborn in No Way Home reminded everyone why this performance held up for two decades. That pumpkin-bomb energy and the genuine menace toward MJ still hits.

About Green Goblin

Norman Osborn, industrialist whose experimental serum unleashes a violent alter ego, originally from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man and later pulled into the MCU multiverse. Played by Willem Dafoe.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Actor
Willem Dafoe
Mysterio

Mysterio

Jake Gyllenhaal clearly has a great time as a disgruntled ex-Stark employee running elaborate illusion cons, and the drone-army gaslighting plot is one of the more clever villain schemes Marvel has written. He deserved even more screen time.

About Mysterio

Quentin Beck, a former Stark Industries employee who uses illusion technology and drones to pose as a hero before turning on Spider-Man. Played by Jake Gyllenhaal.

Film
Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)
Actor
Jake Gyllenhaal
Helmut Zemo
Cover: Wikipedia

Helmut Zemo

Zemo earns his spot without a single superpower, just patience and a grudge. He took down the Avengers from the inside using nothing but intel and a well timed word, and the sokovian accords storyline still holds up as one of the MCU's smartest plots. Bonus points for the purple outfit and that dance scene living rent free in everyone's head.

About Helmut Zemo

A former Sokovian special forces colonel who blames the Avengers for his family's death and engineers a plan to destroy them from within. Played by Daniel Brühl.

First appearance
Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Actor
Daniel Brühl

BB Tier: Solid, memorable, a little uneven

Ego
Cover: Wikipedia

Ego

Kurt Russell playing a Celestial who wants to pave over the universe with his own DNA is a genuinely strange, interesting idea, let down slightly by a very CGI-heavy final act. The father-son betrayal still stings.

About Ego

A Celestial who seeks to terraform planets across the universe with his own consciousness, revealed as Peter Quill's biological father. Played by Kurt Russell in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Film
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
Actor
Kurt Russell
Kang the Conqueror

Kang the Conqueror

Jonathan Majors brought real menace to the variant in Loki and Quantumania, but the character's future got complicated by circumstances outside the writing. Judged purely on what's on screen, the performance is strong even if the larger plan never fully paid off.

About Kang the Conqueror

A variant of a time-traveling conqueror who first appears as 'He Who Remains' and later as a direct threat in the Quantum Realm. Played by Jonathan Majors.

Film/Series
Loki, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
Actor
Jonathan Majors
Ultron
Cover: Wikipedia

Ultron

James Spader's voice work is terrific and 'strings' is a great piece of dialogue, but Age of Ultron never quite figures out what Ultron wants beyond generic extinction. Still, the Pinocchio-robot-gone-wrong concept is a good one.

About Ultron

An AI created by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner that turns against humanity, believing extinction is the only path to peace. Voiced by James Spader in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Film
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Actor
James Spader
Abomination

Abomination

Tim Roth's Emil Blonsky works best as a mirror for Hulk's rage rather than as his own fleshed-out villain, and the character got more interesting once he returned years later in She-Hulk. The Harlem brawl is still a highlight of the early Phase One era.

About Abomination

Emil Blonsky, a soldier who injects himself with an unstable super-soldier serum variant to match Hulk's strength. Played by Tim Roth.

First appearance
The Incredible Hulk (2008)
Actor
Tim Roth
Kingpin

Kingpin

Vincent D'Onofrio's take (by way of Daredevil, folded into the MCU) is quietly terrifying without raising his voice much, a rare villain whose stillness is the scary part. His MCU screen time so far is brief but makes an impression.

About Kingpin

Wilson Fisk, a powerful crime boss in New York City who presents himself as a philanthropist while ruling the underworld. Played by Vincent D'Onofrio.

First appearance
Daredevil (Netflix, folded into MCU canon)
Actor
Vincent D'Onofrio
Doctor Octopus

Doctor Octopus

Alfred Molina returning as Otto Octavius in No Way Home brings genuine weight to a legacy character, and the mechanical arms still look great two decades later. He gets a redemption beat that actually earns its emotion.

About Doctor Octopus

Otto Octavius, a brilliant scientist whose mechanical arms seize control of his mind, returning to the MCU as a multiversal legacy villain. Played by Alfred Molina.

MCU appearance
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Actor
Alfred Molina
Scarlet Witch
Cover: Wikipedia

Scarlet Witch

Multiverse of Madness turns Wanda into its antagonist, and Elizabeth Olsen sells the grief-fueled rampage even when the script leans hard on 'because the Darkhold made her do it.' It works better as a horror-movie villain turn than as a satisfying endpoint for the character.

About Scarlet Witch

Wanda Maximoff, grief-stricken after losing her children, seeks the Darkhold's power to find a version of her family in another universe. Played by Elizabeth Olsen.

Film
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Actor

CC Tier: Serviceable but mostly forgettable

Malekith
Image: Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Malekith

Christopher Eccleston is a fine actor stuck with almost nothing to do in Thor: The Dark World, a movie that still gets flak for being the MCU's most forgettable entry. The Aether MacGuffin does more narrative work than he does.

About Malekith

Leader of the Dark Elves who seeks to plunge the universe into darkness using the Aether, an Infinity Stone in another form. Played by Christopher Eccleston.

Film
Thor: The Dark World (2013)
Actor
Christopher Eccleston
Ronan the Accuser

Ronan the Accuser

Lee Pace brings some gravel-voiced intensity to Guardians of the Galaxy, but Ronan is mostly there to hold the Infinity Stone until the third act. A one-note zealot in a franchise usually better at giving villains actual texture.

About Ronan the Accuser

A radical Kree zealot who defies a peace treaty to continue his war against Xandar, wielding the Power Stone. Played by Lee Pace in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Film
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Actor
Lee Pace
Dormammu
Image: Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Dormammu

A giant flaming face that exists mainly so Doctor Strange can trap it in a time loop and annoy it into submission. Conceptually interesting as a cosmic horror, but there's barely a character here, just a bargaining chip for a clever gimmick ending.

About Dormammu

A being of pure energy ruling the Dark Dimension who seeks to consume Earth, ultimately outwitted by Doctor Strange's time loop. Voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch.

Doctor Strange (2016)
Kaecilius

Kaecilius

Mads Mikkelsen is clearly capable of more than Doctor Strange gives him, stuck mostly delivering exposition about the Dark Dimension in eyeliner. A villain whose ideology barely registers before he's sidelined for Dormammu.

About Kaecilius

A former Kamar-Taj student turned zealot who allies with Dormammu to bring the Dark Dimension to Earth. Played by Mads Mikkelsen in Doctor Strange.

Film
Doctor Strange (2016)
Actor
Mads Mikkelsen
Alexander Pierce

Alexander Pierce

Robert Redford as a Hydra mole inside SHIELD is a smart casting choice that plays on Cold War paranoia thrillers, but the character himself is mostly a mouthpiece for the twist rather than someone memorable on his own. Winter Soldier's plot does the heavy lifting, not him.

About Alexander Pierce

A senior SHIELD official secretly working for Hydra, orchestrating Project Insight to eliminate perceived threats worldwide. Played by Robert Redford.

Film
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
Actor
Robert Redford
Galactus
Cover: Wikipedia

Galactus

A planet-devourer with decades of comics history deserves more than the setup role he's been given so far in the MCU timeline; the character's live-action impact is still very much in progress.

About Galactus

A cosmic entity of immense power who consumes planets to sustain himself, a major Fantastic Four antagonist in Marvel comics lore. Live-action MCU role still developing.

Comics origin
Fantastic Four #48 (1966)

DD Tier: Did the job, nothing more

Iron Monger
Image: Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Iron Monger

Jeff Bridges in a bigger, clunkier suit of armor, playing a mentor-turned-betrayer whose motivation boils down to 'also wanted the suit business.' Fine as a first Iron Man movie final boss, forgettable as a character.

About Iron Monger

Obadiah Stane, Tony Stark's business partner and mentor-turned-betrayer, builds his own suit of armor to seize Stark Industries. Played by Jeff Bridges in Iron Man.

Film
Iron Man (2008)
Actor
Jeff Bridges

FF Tier: Wasted potential

Yellowjacket
Image: Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki (Fandom), © its owner

Yellowjacket

Corey Stoll's Darren Cross has a decent enough tragic-scientist setup, but Ant-Man gives him almost nothing beyond 'wants to sell shrinking tech to bad people.' The yellow suit design is as generic as the plan behind it.

About Yellowjacket

Darren Cross, Hank Pym's former protege who develops his own shrinking suit to sell to the highest bidder. Played by Corey Stoll in Ant-Man.

Film
Ant-Man (2015)
Actor
Corey Stoll

How we ranked them

We weighed motivation and menace over raw power. A villain who makes the hero's journey mean something (Killmonger, Zemo) ranks above one who's just a CGI punching bag with a good voice actor. We factored in writing quality, performance, cultural impact, and how well the plan actually threatens the stakes of the story. Where fandom is split (hello, Agatha vs. Kang discourse) we picked a lane and explained why.

FAQ

Who is the best MCU villain overall?

Thanos is the most common pick among fans and critics alike, thanks to two films of buildup, a clear philosophy, and a performance from Josh Brolin that sold the tragedy underneath the genocide.

Is Loki really a villain?

Only in The Avengers, technically. After that he spends a decade becoming an antihero, but that first turn as the god of mischief trying to conquer Earth is strong enough to earn him a top spot here.

Why isn't Kang ranked higher?

Jonathan Majors' performance in Loki and Quantumania is genuinely strong, but the character's larger arc across the MCU became uncertain for reasons outside the writing itself, so we judged him on what's actually on screen.

What's the most underrated MCU villain?

Red Skull. Hugo Weaving's Vormir appearances years after Captain America: The First Avenger gave the character a strange, quiet second act that most casual fans forget happened.

Which MCU villain is the most disliked by fans?

Yellowjacket and Malekith usually top the 'most forgettable villain' conversations, mostly for being generic threats in otherwise fun movies.
