MCU Heroes Tier List: Every Avenger and Ally Ranked
The MCU has given us close to two decades of heroes, from billionaire playboys in flying armor to a raccoon with a grudge. We went through all 33 major names, from the original Avengers to the newer faces still finding their footing, and ranked them by impact, writing, performance and how much we'd actually want to watch a movie about them again.
This is the site's take based on broad fan and critic consensus, with our own opinion where the arguments get heated (and with a cast this big, they always do). Disagree with where your favorite landed? That's half the fun. Rank them yourself and see how close you get.

SS Tier: The pillars of the MCU

Iron Man
Robert Downey Jr. basically invented the modern MCU's tone in one garage scene building the Mark I suit. Tony Stark's arc from arms dealer to the guy who snaps his fingers in Endgame is still the backbone the entire franchise leans on.
About Iron Man
Tony Stark is a billionaire inventor who builds a powered suit of armor after being captured by terrorists, becoming Iron Man. Played by Robert Downey Jr., he launched the MCU in 2008 and remained its central figure through Avengers: Endgame.
- First appearance
- Iron Man (2008)
- Actor
- Robert Downey Jr.

Captain America (Steve Rogers)
The rare hero who got better with every movie. Winter Soldier turned him into the MCU's best political thriller lead, and 'I can do this all day' lands every single time.
About Captain America (Steve Rogers)
A frail young man transformed into a super-soldier during World War II, Steve Rogers wakes up decades later to lead the Avengers. Chris Evans played him across multiple solo films and ensemble movies.
- First appearance
- Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
- Actor
- Chris Evans

Thor
Chris Hemsworth figured out how to play a god as a punchline without losing the muscle underneath, and Ragnarok is the point where the character actually surpassed his first two movies. Love & Thunder stumbled, but the character's peak is undeniable.
About Thor
The Asgardian god of thunder, Thor wields the hammer Mjolnir (and later an axe called Stormbreaker). Chris Hemsworth has played him across four solo films plus multiple Avengers entries.
- First appearance
- Thor (2011)
- Actor
- Chris Hemsworth
AA Tier: Fan favorites with real staying power

Black Widow
Underused for years in her own franchise before finally getting a solo film, which is honestly the whole complaint in one sentence. Natasha's death in Endgame still hits because Scarlett Johansson sold a decade of quiet guilt with almost no dialogue.
About Black Widow
Natasha Romanoff is a former Russian spy turned SHIELD agent and founding Avenger. Scarlett Johansson played her from 2010 until the character's death in Endgame, with a solo prequel film released in 2021.
- First appearance
- Iron Man 2 (2010)
- Actor
- Scarlett Johansson

Loki
Started as a one-note villain and became one of the richest characters in the whole franchise, which is a glow-up nobody saw coming in 2012. Tom Hiddleston's chemistry with literally everyone he shares a scene with is the real special effect.
About Loki
Loki is Thor's adopted brother, the Asgardian god of mischief, whose arc runs from villain in the first Avengers film to a time-variant hero in his own Disney+ series. Tom Hiddleston has played him since 2011.
- First appearance
- Thor (2011)
- Actor
- Tom Hiddleston

Spider-Man
Tom Holland's Peter Parker is the most purely likable hero in the lineup, all nervous energy and genuine heartbreak over Tony Stark. No Way Home gave him the most emotionally loaded ending of any Phase 4 movie.
About Spider-Man
Peter Parker is a Queens teenager with spider-based powers, recruited into the MCU by Tony Stark. Tom Holland has played him since Captain America: Civil War.
- First appearance
- Captain America: Civil War (2016)
- Actor
- Tom Holland

Black Panther (T'Challa)
Chadwick Boseman made T'Challa feel like a king from his very first scene, calm and lethal in equal measure. Wakanda's reveal in his solo film is still one of the best world-building moments the MCU has pulled off.
About Black Panther (T'Challa)
T'Challa is the king of Wakanda and its technologically advanced, vibranium-powered protector. Chadwick Boseman played him from 2016 until his death in 2020.
- First appearance
- Captain America: Civil War (2016)
- Actor
- Chadwick Boseman

Winter Soldier
Bucky Barnes carries more tragedy per minute than almost anyone else on this list, brainwashed assassin turned guilt-ridden survivor. Sebastian Stan plays the weight of it without ever overplaying it.
About Winter Soldier
Bucky Barnes is Steve Rogers' childhood friend, brainwashed into a Soviet assassin before reclaiming his identity. Sebastian Stan has played him since 2011.
- First appearance
- Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
- Actor
- Sebastian Stan

Gamora
Zoe Saldana gives Gamora a hardness that makes her softer moments with Quill actually land. Her death on Vormir is one of the few MCU sacrifices that still stings on rewatch.
About Gamora
Gamora is an adopted daughter of Thanos trained as an assassin, who turns against him to join the Guardians. Zoe Saldana has played her since 2014.
- First appearance
- Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
- Actor
- Zoe Saldana

Rocket
A CGI raccoon somehow ends up one of the most emotionally devastating characters in the franchise, and Guardians Vol. 3 proves it wasn't an accident. Bradley Cooper's voice work turns the sarcasm into armor, not just comic relief.
About Rocket
Rocket is a genetically and cybernetically enhanced raccoon with a short temper and a knack for weapons. Bradley Cooper voices him across the Guardians films.
- First appearance
- Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
- Actor
- Bradley Cooper (voice)
BB Tier: Solid, reliable, occasionally great

Hulk
Mark Ruffalo's Hulk is genuinely great whenever the writers commit to the Bruce Banner side of the equation, especially the smart merge in Endgame. Still feels like the character never got the standalone treatment he deserved post-Avengers.
About Hulk
Bruce Banner turns into a giant green rage monster after a gamma radiation accident. Mark Ruffalo has played him since 2012's The Avengers.
- First appearance (Ruffalo)
- The Avengers (2012)
- Actor
- Mark Ruffalo

Doctor Strange
Benedict Cumberbatch plays arrogance well, and 'we're in the endgame now' is the single best line delivery in that whole movie. Multiverse of Madness leaned him toward horror-movie chaos, which split fans more than any other Phase 4 choice.
About Doctor Strange
Stephen Strange is a former neurosurgeon turned Sorcerer Supreme after an accident ends his career. Benedict Cumberbatch has played him since 2016.
- First appearance
- Doctor Strange (2016)
- Actor
- Benedict Cumberbatch

Star-Lord
Chris Pratt's Peter Quill is funny, a little pathetic, and genuinely good at holding the Guardians together as a makeshift family. His worst moment (the Thanos punch) is also the most human thing that happens in Infinity War.
About Star-Lord
Peter Quill is a human abducted from Earth as a child and raised among space pirates, leading the Guardians of the Galaxy. Chris Pratt has played him since 2014.
- First appearance
- Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
- Actor
- Chris Pratt

Scarlet Witch
WandaVision is one of the best things Marvel Studios has made, full stop, and it's built entirely on Elizabeth Olsen's grief. Multiverse of Madness then turned her into a full villain, a choice fans still argue about constantly.
About Scarlet Witch
Wanda Maximoff is a Sokovian-born hero with reality-warping chaos magic. Elizabeth Olsen has played her since 2015, with the Disney+ series WandaVision deepening the character significantly in 2021.
- First appearance
- Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
- Actor
- Elizabeth Olsen

Nebula
Karen Gillan's arc from bitter, tortured sister to the Nebula who actually finishes the fight in Endgame is one of the quieter redemption stories the MCU pulled off well.
About Nebula
Nebula is Gamora's cybernetically altered adopted sister, also raised by Thanos, who eventually turns against him too. Karen Gillan has played her since 2014.
- First appearance
- Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
- Actor
- Karen Gillan

Shang-Chi
Simu Liu brings genuine martial arts choreography to the MCU for the first time, and the bus fight alone justifies his solo movie. Still waiting to see him woven deeper into the wider story.
About Shang-Chi
Shang-Chi is a martial artist trained from childhood by his father, the leader of the Ten Rings organization. Simu Liu has played him since the character's 2021 solo film.
- First appearance
- Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
- Actor
- Simu Liu

Captain America (Sam Wilson)
Anthony Mackie earns the shield in Falcon and the Winter Soldier by wrestling honestly with what it means for a Black man to carry it. Brave New World is his real test as the headline Captain.
About Captain America (Sam Wilson)
Sam Wilson, formerly the Falcon, takes up the shield after Steve Rogers passes it to him in Endgame. Anthony Mackie has played him since 2014.
- First appearance
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
- Actor
- Anthony Mackie

War Machine
Don Cheadle's Rhodey is the most grounded, least flashy guy in every room he's in, which is exactly why he works. Never got a solo spotlight, but he's been in nearly every major Avengers fight since Iron Man 2.
About War Machine
James 'Rhodey' Rhodes is Tony Stark's close friend and a military pilot who pilots his own suit of armor. Don Cheadle has played him since 2010.
- First appearance
- Iron Man 2 (2010)
- Actor
- Don Cheadle

Groot
Three words of dialogue and somehow one of the most beloved characters in the franchise. Vin Diesel's delivery of 'I am Groot' does more emotional heavy lifting than it has any right to.
About Groot
Groot is a tree-like alien being capable of regeneration, speaking only the phrase 'I am Groot.' Vin Diesel has voiced him since 2014.
- First appearance
- Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
- Actor
- Vin Diesel (voice)
CC Tier: Fine, but not essential

Drax
Dave Bautista plays the literal-minded comic relief better than the role probably deserved, and he gets a few genuinely funny lines about not being invisible. Rarely given much beyond the joke, though.
About Drax
Drax the Destroyer is a warrior seeking revenge for the deaths of his family at Thanos' hands, known for taking things extremely literally. Dave Bautista has played him since 2014.
- First appearance
- Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
- Actor
- Dave Bautista

Hawkeye
Jeremy Renner spent years as the Avenger with the least to do, then the Hawkeye show finally gave Clint Barton a real arc about guilt and retirement. Better late than never.
About Hawkeye
Clint Barton is a master archer and founding Avenger with no superpowers, just extreme skill. Jeremy Renner played him, later getting a dedicated Disney+ series in 2021.
- First appearance
- Thor (2011)
- Actor
- Jeremy Renner

Captain Marvel
Carol Danvers arrives in Endgame as an overwhelming power fantasy, which is the point, but it also means she's never felt like she needs the rest of the team. The Marvels tried to fix that with mixed results.
About Captain Marvel
Carol Danvers is a former Air Force pilot given immense energy-based powers, introduced as one of the MCU's most powerful heroes. Brie Larson has played her since 2019.
- First appearance
- Captain Marvel (2019)
- Actor
- Brie Larson

Ant-Man
Paul Rudd is consistently charming as Scott Lang, a regular guy who keeps getting pulled into cosmic stakes he's visibly unprepared for. The Quantumania movie did him no favors, burying the character under multiverse plot.
About Ant-Man
Scott Lang is an ex-con turned size-shifting hero using Hank Pym's shrinking technology. Paul Rudd has played him since 2015.
- First appearance
- Ant-Man (2015)
- Actor
- Paul Rudd

Vision
Paul Bettany brings real melancholy to an android built from an Infinity Stone, and his death scene in Infinity War (then again in Endgame) is genuinely rough. WandaVision gave him a strange, interesting afterlife too.
About Vision
Vision is a synthetic being created from an Infinity Stone and Tony Stark's AI, J.A.R.V.I.S. Paul Bettany has played him since 2015.
- First appearance
- Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
- Actor
- Paul Bettany

Shuri
Letitia Wright's Shuri is a gifted scientist first introduced as comic relief to her brother, then forced into the Black Panther mantle under genuinely tragic circumstances in Wakanda Forever.
About Shuri
Shuri is T'Challa's younger sister and Wakanda's lead scientist, who takes up the Black Panther mantle in the sequel. Letitia Wright has played her since 2016.
- First appearance
- Captain America: Civil War (2016)
- Actor
- Letitia Wright

Wasp
Evangeline Lilly's Hope van Dyne is capable and sharp, often more competent in a fight than Scott Lang himself, but the scripts rarely center her long enough to build real momentum.
About Wasp
Hope van Dyne is Hank Pym's daughter, who becomes the second Wasp after inheriting the size-changing suit technology. Evangeline Lilly has played her since 2015.
- First appearance
- Ant-Man (2015)
- Actor
- Evangeline Lilly

Yelena Belova
Florence Pugh steals her scenes in Black Widow and then keeps stealing them in Hawkeye, all deadpan delivery and vest obsession. One of the best new additions of the last few years.
About Yelena Belova
Yelena is Natasha Romanoff's fellow Black Widow-trained operative and adoptive sister, introduced in the 2021 Black Widow film. Florence Pugh has played her since then, including in the Hawkeye series.
- First appearance
- Black Widow (2021)
- Actor
- Florence Pugh

Nick Fury
Samuel L. Jackson's Fury spent a decade as the guy pulling strings behind the scenes, which worked great until Secret Invasion tried to make him the main event and exposed how thin the character actually is outside that role.
About Nick Fury
Nick Fury is the former director of SHIELD and the man who first assembled the Avengers initiative. Samuel L. Jackson has played him since 2008.
- First appearance
- Iron Man (2008)
- Actor
- Samuel L. Jackson
DD Tier: Underused or undercooked

Wong
Benedict Wong turns a side character into a reliable scene-stealer through sheer deadpan timing, especially the karaoke bit. Still mostly exists to support other people's stories.
About Wong
Wong is a sorcerer and librarian of Kamar-Taj, a close ally of Doctor Strange and later Sorcerer Supreme. Benedict Wong has played him since 2016.
- First appearance
- Doctor Strange (2016)
- Actor
- Benedict Wong

Mantis
Pom Klementieff plays Mantis as sweet and a little alien in her social instincts, good for a laugh, but she rarely gets handed anything with real stakes.
About Mantis
Mantis is an empathic alien who can sense and manipulate others' emotions, joining the Guardians of the Galaxy. Pom Klementieff has played her since 2017.
- First appearance
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
- Actor
- Pom Klementieff

Moon Knight
Oscar Isaac does a lot with the dissociative identity angle in his Disney+ show, genuinely one of the stranger swings Marvel has taken. The character's MCU future is murky at best right now.
About Moon Knight
Marc Spector is a mercenary with dissociative identity disorder who becomes the avatar of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. Oscar Isaac has played him since the 2022 Disney+ series.
- First appearance
- Moon Knight (2022)
- Actor
- Oscar Isaac

Kate Bishop
Hailee Steinfeld is likable as the eager archery student shadowing Clint Barton, but one show isn't enough yet to say whether she's a star or just a promising sidekick.
About Kate Bishop
Kate Bishop is a skilled young archer who idolizes Hawkeye and eventually trains under him. Hailee Steinfeld has played her since the 2021 Disney+ series.
- First appearance
- Hawkeye (2021)
- Actor
- Hailee Steinfeld
FF Tier: The MCU just didn't need them

Ms. Marvel
Iman Vellani is charming as Kamala Khan, a teenage superhero fangirl who's honestly one of the better new performances in recent Marvel TV. But The Marvels underperforming badly means the character's momentum stalled before it really started.
About Ms. Marvel
Kamala Khan is a New Jersey teenager and superhero fangirl who discovers she has her own powers. Iman Vellani has played her since the 2022 Disney+ series.
- First appearance
- Ms. Marvel (2022)
- Actor
- Iman Vellani
How we ranked them
We weighed screen impact (did they change the shape of the MCU or just show up for it), quality of character writing across their appearances, how memorable the performance was, and staying power in fan conversation years later. Team players were judged on what they added to the group dynamic, not just solo billing. Newer characters were graded on what they've done so far, not potential.

Rank these yourselfFAQ
Who is the best MCU hero overall?
By consensus, it's a near-tie between Iron Man and Captain America. Tony Stark built the franchise's foundation, while Steve Rogers arguably had the strongest overall character arc across three solo films.
Which MCU hero is the most underrated?
Rocket and Nebula get less credit than they deserve. Both had quieter, slower-burn arcs that paid off hugely by Endgame and Guardians Vol. 3, without the marketing push bigger names got.
Which MCU heroes do fans disagree on most?
Scarlet Witch and Captain Marvel split opinion the hardest. Wanda's heel turn in Multiverse of Madness and Carol's overpowered reputation both generate real arguments, not just nitpicking.
Is Loki considered a hero in this list?
Yes, we included him given his redemption arc across the Avengers films and his own Disney+ series, where he shifts from villain to someone actively protecting the timeline.
Why did Ms. Marvel rank so low despite good reviews for the show?
The ranking reflects her shaky MCU momentum overall, since The Marvels underperformed and her future role in the franchise is currently unclear, not the quality of Iman Vellani's performance.
Are Nick Fury and Wong considered full superheroes?
They're not traditional powered heroes, but both are central enough to the MCU's hero ecosystem (SHIELD operations and magic respectively) that we included them alongside the Avengers.
