Jurassic Park Movies Tier List: All 7 Ranked

Six sequels and one perfect original. The Jurassic Park/World franchise has given us career-best Spielberg, a few genuinely dumb popcorn flicks, and at least one movie that feels like it was written by committee during a fire drill.

We ranked all seven films from the one that changed blockbuster filmmaking forever down to the one that made raptors feel like an afterthought. This reflects what fans and critics generally agree on, with our own take where the arguments get heated (and with this franchise, they always do).

Disagree with where we put Fallen Kingdom? Good. That's the fun of it. Rank them yourself.

SS Tier: The one that started it all

Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park

Spielberg at the absolute peak of his powers. The T. rex breaking through the fence in the rain, the glass of water rippling, the brachiosaurus reveal set to John Williams, every single one of these is still untouchable decades later. It's not just the best film in this franchise, it's one of the best blockbusters ever made, full stop.

About Jurassic Park

A 1993 Steven Spielberg film based on Michael Crichton's novel, about a theme park of cloned dinosaurs that goes catastrophically wrong. It won three Academy Awards for its sound and visual effects.

Director
Steven Spielberg
Released
1993

AA Tier: Genuinely good dino cinema

The Lost World: Jurassic Park

The Lost World: Jurassic Park

Messier and meaner than the first, but it's got teeth. The trailer dangling off the cliff edge is a genuinely great set piece, and letting a T. rex loose in San Diego is the kind of unhinged swing a sequel should take. Not everyone loves it, but it earns its spot above the pack.

About The Lost World: Jurassic Park

The 1997 sequel, also directed by Spielberg, following a new expedition to a second dinosaur island.

Director
Steven Spielberg
Released
1997
Jurassic World

Jurassic World

A legacy sequel that actually understood the assignment. Chris Pratt training raptors shouldn't work as well as it does, and the Indominus rex is a solid new monster even if the park-gone-wrong plot is basically a rerun. It made over a billion dollars for a reason.

About Jurassic World

A 2015 legacy sequel directed by Colin Trevorrow, set in a fully operational version of the original park, now called Jurassic World.

Director
Colin Trevorrow
Released
2015

BB Tier: Fun but flawed

Jurassic Park III

Jurassic Park III

Short, a little silly, and often dismissed, but it moves fast and gives us the Spinosaurus snapping the T. rex's neck, which is still one of the franchise's boldest moments. Fans are genuinely split on this one: some call it the series' low point, others say it's underrated popcorn fun. We land somewhere in the middle.

About Jurassic Park III

A 2001 film directed by Joe Johnston, the first in the franchise not directed by Spielberg (though he stayed on as producer).

Director
Joe Johnston
Released
2001

CC Tier: Popcorn with no bite

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
Cover: Wikipedia

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

The volcano stuff is actually pretty good, tense and operatic in a way the franchise hadn't tried before. Then it turns into a haunted house movie with a dinosaur auction and a cloned little girl, and the whole thing loses the plot. Gorgeous to look at, baffling to sit through.

About Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

A 2018 sequel directed by J.A. Bayona, centered on a volcanic eruption threatening the dinosaurs left on Isla Nublar.

Director
J.A. Bayona
Released
2018

DD Tier: Running on fumes

Jurassic World Dominion
Cover: Wikipedia

Jurassic World Dominion

Bringing back the original trio should have felt like a victory lap, instead it feels like two different movies stapled together, one about giant locusts and gene-splicing conspiracies, one about Sam Neill looking nostalgic. Way too much plot, way too little dinosaur menace.

About Jurassic World Dominion

A 2022 film directed by Colin Trevorrow that brings back the original Jurassic Park cast alongside the Jurassic World leads.

Director
Colin Trevorrow
Released
2022
Jurassic World Rebirth
Cover: Wikipedia

Jurassic World Rebirth

The franchise's attempt at a soft reset, swapping out the old cast for new faces and a mutant-dinosaur angle. Early reaction has been mixed at best, it's watchable enough but feels like a series that's run out of real ideas and is just rearranging the furniture.

About Jurassic World Rebirth

The most recent entry in the franchise, continuing the Jurassic World storyline with a new cast and setting.

Released
2025

How we ranked them

We weighed craft (direction, effects, pacing), how well each film handles its dinosaurs as both spectacle and threat, legacy and cultural impact, and simple rewatchability. We leaned on the broad consensus from critics and fan forums, then made our own call on the films where opinion genuinely splits, looking at you, Jurassic Park III fans and haters alike.

FAQ

What is the best Jurassic Park movie?

The original 1993 Jurassic Park, by a wide margin. It's the rare blockbuster that holds up frame for frame decades later.

What is the worst Jurassic Park movie?

Opinions vary, but Jurassic World Dominion and Jurassic World Rebirth tend to land at the bottom of most fan and critic rankings for overstuffed or uninspired plotting.

Is Jurassic Park III worth watching?

It's divisive. It's shorter and sillier than the others, but the Spinosaurus vs T. rex fight and the briskness of it win over a decent chunk of fans.

How many Jurassic Park movies are there?

Seven total: three original Jurassic Park films and four Jurassic World films, counting Jurassic World Rebirth.

Are the Jurassic World movies as good as the originals?

The first Jurassic World holds up well, but most fans agree the quality dipped with Fallen Kingdom and Dominion.
