James Bond Actors Tier List: Every 007 Ranked

Six actors, one license to kill, and about sixty years of arguments in pubs about who actually wore the tux best. We're ranking all six official Bonds, from the guy who invented the role to the guy who made it bleed.

This is based on where fans and critics broadly land after decades of debate: forum threads, retrospectives, best-of lists, the works. We've picked a side where people disagree (and on Bond, people always disagree), so don't expect everyone to nod along. Rank them yourself if you think we've got it wrong.

SS Tier: The ones who define the role

Sean Connery

He's the template. Every Bond since has either copied the Connery swagger or deliberately run from it, and that alone tells you how much he owns this role. Watch him in Goldfinger ordering that martini and tell us anyone has topped that blend of menace and charm since.

About Sean Connery

Scottish actor who originated the role of James Bond on screen starting with Dr. No. He defined the character's mix of charm and violence for generations of actors who followed.

Daniel Craig

Craig took a character who'd drifted into self-parody and made him hurt again. Casino Royale's poker table tension and that brutal stairwell fight still feel like a different movie series entirely. Fans who swore Bond had to be a cartoon came around fast once they saw what a wounded, furious 007 could do.

About Daniel Craig

English actor who played a rebooted, more grounded James Bond starting with Casino Royale, running through Spectre and No Time to Die.

AA Tier: Era-defining Bonds

Roger Moore

Roger Moore

Moore leaned all the way into the joke and became the most purely entertaining Bond for it. The raised eyebrow, the terrible puns, the ski jump with a Union Jack parachute in The Spy Who Loved Me, it's silly and he knows it, and that's the appeal. Seven films in the role is its own kind of record, even if the back half gets a bit creaky.

About Roger Moore

English actor who played Bond across the 1970s and into the 1980s, bringing a lighter, more comedic tone to the role.

Pierce Brosnan

Brosnan is the Bond who got the suit, the one-liners, and the gadgets exactly right for the 90s, and GoldenEye remains a genuine high point for the franchise. The scripts around him got sillier as his run went on (invisible car, anyone), which is the only reason he's not higher. Still, a lot of fans who grew up on his era will fight for him as their favorite, and it's an easy argument to understand.

About Pierce Brosnan

Irish actor who played Bond through the 1990s and early 2000s, reviving the franchise after a long gap with GoldenEye.

BB Tier: Underrated and overdue for respect

Timothy Dalton

Timothy Dalton

Dalton gets reassessed more than any other Bond, and rightly so. He played it closer to Fleming's novels, colder and more haunted, and The Living Daylights holds up better than its reputation suggests. He only got two films, which is probably why he never built the broad following his performance deserved.

About Timothy Dalton

Welsh actor who took over the role in the late 1980s with a grittier, more literary take on the character closer to Ian Fleming's original novels.

George Lazenby

George Lazenby

One film, a lot of what-ifs. On Her Majesty's Secret Service is a genuinely good Bond movie with a devastating ending, and Lazenby isn't the disaster his reputation sometimes claims.

About George Lazenby

Australian actor and model who played Bond exactly once, in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. He left the role after that film.

How we ranked them

We weighed how well each actor defined Bond for their era, how their films hold up now, and what critics and fans consistently say when they argue about this online. Charisma, physicality, the writing they were handed, and lasting cultural impact all factor in. We also gave credit for range, since the best Bonds found something beyond just "cool guy with a gun."

FAQ

Who is the best James Bond actor?

Most fans and critics put Sean Connery at the top for originating the role, with Daniel Craig as the other actor most often mentioned in the same breath for reinventing it decades later.

Why is George Lazenby ranked lower?

He only played Bond once, in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, so he never had the chance to build the body of work the other actors did, even though that one film is well regarded.

Is Timothy Dalton underrated as Bond?

Yes, by most modern accounts. His two films, especially The Living Daylights, get more respect now than they did on release, mainly because his darker take lines up with what Daniel Craig later did.

Who played James Bond the most times?

Roger Moore holds the record among the official Eon Productions films, playing Bond seven times.

Did Sean Connery play Bond outside the official film series?

Yes, he returned in 1983's Never Say Never Again, a non-Eon production, outside the main franchise.
