Fast & Furious Movies Tier List, Ranked Best to Worst
Eleven movies, one family that somehow keeps growing, and a franchise that started as a street racing thriller and ended up launching cars into space. We ranked all eleven Fast & Furious films, including the Hobbs & Shaw spinoff, from the ones that nail the formula to the ones that feel like filler between set pieces.
This reflects what fans argue about on forums and what critics have said in reviews, with our own call where the arguments don't settle. Disagree? That's half the fun of this franchise. Rank it yourself and see where you land.

SS Tier: The gold standard

Fast Five
The moment the series figured out what it actually wanted to be: a heist movie with a family of outlaws instead of a street racing drama. Adding Dwayne Johnson as Hobbs was a masterstroke, and dragging a bank vault through the streets of Rio is still one of the best set pieces the franchise has ever pulled off.
About Fast Five
The 2011 film that reinvented the series as a heist franchise, adding Dwayne Johnson as federal agent Luke Hobbs. Set largely in Rio de Janeiro, it's often cited as the series' turning point.
- Released
- 2011

Furious 7
Cars parachuting out of a plane, a Lykan Hypersport jumping between Abu Dhabi skyscrapers, and an ending that had to double as a goodbye to Paul Walker. It shouldn't work emotionally and ridiculously at the same time, but it does, and that farewell montage still gets people.
About Furious 7
Released in 2015, this entry became notable for completing filming after star Paul Walker's death, with the production adapting its story and ending as a tribute to him.
- Released
- 2015
AA Tier: Properly great

Fast & Furious 6
The tank chase alone justifies the ticket price, and that runway sequence where the plane just never seems to stop unspooling is the franchise at its most gloriously excessive. Letty's return gave the sixth entry stakes the series badly needed by that point.
About Fast & Furious 6
The 2013 sixth installment, bringing back Michelle Rodriguez's Letty and featuring a lengthy runway chase finale. It continued the globe-trotting heist formula set up by Fast Five.
- Released
- 2013

The Fast and the Furious
No nitrous-powered spaceships here, just Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, and quarter-mile street races shot with real grit. It's smaller and scrappier than everything that followed, but it's the reason any of this exists, and it still holds up as a tight little action thriller.
About The Fast and the Furious
The 2001 film that started it all, following an undercover cop infiltrating a street racing crew in Los Angeles. Directed by Rob Cohen, it introduced Dominic Toretto and Brian O'Conner.

- 2001

BB Tier: Solidly entertaining

Hobbs & Shaw
Spinning Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham off into their own buddy-action movie was a gamble that mostly paid off thanks to pure chemistry between the two leads. It's dumber and more cartoonish than the mainline films, which is either a feature or a bug depending who you ask.
About Hobbs & Shaw
A 2019 spinoff pairing Dwayne Johnson's Hobbs with Jason Statham's Shaw, set apart from the main numbered series. It leaned into buddy-action comedy and bigger-than-life villains.
- Released
- 2019

Fast & Furious
The fourth movie gets dismissed as a bridge film, but it's the one that actually reunited the original cast and set up everything from Fast Five onward. It's darker and more grounded than people remember, even if the plot is mostly an excuse to get the band back together.
About Fast & Furious
The 2009 fourth film that reunited the original core cast of Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster. It set the stage for the franchise's shift toward heist-style storylines.
- Released
- 2009

2 Fast 2 Furious
No Vin Diesel, more neon, and a plot that's basically Miami Vice with import cars. Tyrese and Paul Walker carry it on charm alone, and it's the point where the series started leaning into pure popcorn fun instead of street-racing realism.
About 2 Fast 2 Furious
The 2003 sequel that dropped Vin Diesel and shifted the action to Miami, pairing Paul Walker with Tyrese Gibson. It leaned harder into flashy cars and over-the-top chases.
- Released
- 2003
CC Tier: Fine, but forgettable

F9
This is the one where a Pontiac Fiero becomes a rocket car and somehow that's not even the most absurd thing on screen, since Han coming back from the dead without much explanation might take that honor. Fans are genuinely split on this one: some love the full send into comic-book territory, others think it's where the series jumped the shark for good.
About F9
The 2021 ninth mainline film, bringing back Han and introducing Dom's estranged brother. It pushed the franchise's action into more explicitly over-the-top, physics-defying territory.
- Released
- 2021

The Fate of the Furious
Dom going rogue against his own family is a bold swing, but the movie never quite earns the betrayal before walking it back. The submarine chase through the ice is a highlight, though it can't fully make up for a plot that feels like it's just stalling for the next installment.
About The Fate of the Furious
The 2017 eighth film in which Dominic Toretto is manipulated into betraying his crew. It marked a shift toward larger-scale, more fantastical action set pieces.
- Released
- 2017
DD Tier: Running on fumes

Fast X
Splitting the story into multiple parts left this one feeling more like a long setup than its own movie, and Jason Momoa's scenery-chewing villain is doing a lot of the heavy lifting. It ends on a cliffhanger that asks you to just trust the next chapter will stick the landing.
About Fast X
Released in 2023, this installment set up a planned multi-part conclusion to the saga, introducing Jason Momoa as a new antagonist tied to past events from Fast Five.
- Released
- 2023
FF Tier: Skip it

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
Barely connected to the rest of the series at the time it came out, with a new cast, a new location, and a plot nobody was asking for. It only matters now because of a certain cameo that retroactively slotted it into the timeline, which says a lot about how little the movie works on its own.
About The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
A 2006 entry set largely in Tokyo, focused on a new character sent to Japan and the drifting subculture there. It later gained significance for a cameo tying it into the wider series timeline.
- Released
- 2006
How we ranked them
We weighed how much fun each movie is against how well it actually works as a movie: pacing, stunts, cast chemistry, and whether the plot serves the action or just gets in the way. Cultural impact and rewatchability counted too. A film doesn't need to be "good" by normal standards to rank high here, it needs to deliver what this series promises.

What is the best Fast & Furious movie?
Fan and critic consensus points to Fast Five as the franchise peak, with Furious 7 right behind it as the other true standout.
What is the worst Fast & Furious movie?
The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift is widely considered the weakest entry, mostly because it barely connects to the main story until later films retrofitted it in.
What order should I watch the Fast & Furious movies in?
Release order works fine for most fans, though some suggest watching Tokyo Drift after Fast & Furious 6 to match its place in the internal timeline.
Is Hobbs & Shaw canon to the main Fast & Furious series?
Yes, it's set in the same universe as a spinoff, though it's lighter in tone and doesn't directly affect the main Dom and family storyline.
Do I need to watch all the movies to understand Fast X?
You'll get a lot more out of it if you've seen at least Fast Five through F9, since Fast X leans heavily on past relationships and villains.
