DreamWorks Movies Tier List: Every Film Ranked

DreamWorks Animation has been messing with Pixar's lunch money since 1998, mixing pop culture jokes, genuine heart, and the occasional fart gag into something that became its own whole lane of animation. We put all 35 feature films here, from the swamp-dwelling ogre that started it all to the latest dragon reboot.

This ranking leans on what fans and critics keep saying in reviews, forums, and best-of debates, with our own tiebreakers where the internet can't agree (looking at you, Shrek the Third defenders). Think we got one wrong? That's what the comments are for.

How to Train Your Dragon 2

How to Train Your Dragon 2

The rare sequel that actually deepens the story instead of just repeating it. Valka's introduction and that gut-punch of a scene in the final act still get people in the comments years later.

About How to Train Your Dragon 2

The second installment in the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, set five years after the first film, where Hiccup discovers his mother Valka and confronts the dragon-hunting warlord Drago Bludvist. Directed by Dean DeBlois, it expanded the franchise's world and deepened its emotional stakes.

Shrek

Shrek

The one that changed the whole formula. Pop songs, fairy tale parody, and a love story that didn't need a prince. Still funny, still weirdly sincere under the layers of irony.

About Shrek

A 2001 DreamWorks film about an ogre who reluctantly rescues a princess to get his swamp back. Based loosely on William Steig's picture book, it won the first-ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

How to Train Your Dragon

Toothless is basically a cat crossed with a dragon and it works perfectly. The flying sequences set a bar DreamWorks rarely hits elsewhere, and John Powell's score carries half the emotion.

About How to Train Your Dragon

A 2010 film about a young Viking who befriends a dragon instead of killing it. Based on Cressida Cowell's book series, it launched one of DreamWorks' most critically acclaimed trilogies.

The Prince of Egypt
Cover: Wikipedia

The Prince of Egypt

DreamWorks' most ambitious swing and it landed. The Red Sea sequence remains one of the most stunning things the studio has ever put on screen, and the voice cast (Val Kilmer, Ralph Fiennes) never phones it in.

About The Prince of Egypt

A 1998 animated retelling of the Exodus story, following Moses and Ramses as brothers divided by faith and power. Notable for its traditional animation craftsmanship and an original song score.

Shrek 2

Shrek 2

Puss in Boots shows up and steals the entire franchise in one scene. Funnier and more quotable than the original for a lot of fans, even if it trades some of that film's sincerity for jokes.

About Shrek 2

The sequel to Shrek, in which Shrek and Fiona travel to the kingdom of Far Far Away to meet Fiona's parents, leading to encounters with the Fairy Godmother and the suave Puss in Boots, who joins the cast of recurring characters.

Kung Fu Panda

Kung Fu Panda

Jack Black as a kung fu obsessed panda sounds like a dumb pitch until you watch it. The animation during the fight scenes holds up against anything live action, and the 'there is no secret ingredient' bit still lands.

About Kung Fu Panda

The first film in the Kung Fu Panda franchise, following Po, an unlikely panda who is chosen as the prophesied Dragon Warrior and trained by Master Shifu to defeat the villainous snow leopard Tai Lung. It launched one of DreamWorks' most successful animated franchises.

The Wild Robot

The Wild Robot

A late addition that reminded everyone DreamWorks can still make something gorgeous and genuinely moving. The painterly visual style and Lupita Nyong'o's voice work got it talked about as the studio's best in years.

About The Wild Robot

A 2024 film about a shipwrecked robot who learns to survive and raise an orphaned gosling on a remote island. Based on Peter Brown's novel, praised for its painterly animation style.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

Nobody expected a Puss in Boots sequel to be this good. The Death subplot is darker than almost anything else on this list and the animation style borrows from Spider-Verse in a way that actually pays off.

About Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

A 2022 animated film and sequel to 'Puss in Boots,' in which the swashbuckling cat discovers he has lost eight of his nine lives and sets out to find a magical wish-granting star. It was widely praised for its animation style and story.

Megamind

Underrated by box office numbers, loved by everyone who actually watched it. Will Ferrell's supervillain with nothing left to fight for is a smarter twist on the superhero genre than most live action attempts.

About Megamind

A 2010 animated superhero comedy about a supervillain who finally defeats his nemesis, only to find himself without purpose and needing to create a new hero to fight. It stars Will Ferrell in the title role.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

A solid send-off that wraps the trilogy with real emotional weight, even if it can't quite match the second film's punch. The ending made a lot of people cry whether they wanted to or not.

About How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

The third and final film in DreamWorks' How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, following Hiccup and Toothless as Berk's dragon riders search for a hidden dragon utopia. Shrek Forever After

An alternate-universe twist that feels more like a contractual obligation than a story anyone was asking for. Has its moments but mostly exists to close out the franchise, not elevate it.

How we ranked them

We weighed critical reception, how well each film has aged, box office and cultural footprint, and what fans actually say when these movies come up in conversation. Sequels were judged on their own merits, not just riding the original's coattails. Where critics and fans split hard, we called it ourselves and said so.

By critical and fan consensus, it's a toss-up between How to Train Your Dragon 2, the original Shrek, and The Prince of Egypt. All three land in our S tier.

What is considered the worst DreamWorks movie?

Bee Movie gets the most mockery online, though it's more remembered as a meme than genuinely hated. Shrek the Third is the most commonly cited disappointment within a beloved franchise.

A lot of fans and critics think so. All three original trilogy entries land in our S or B tier, with How to Train Your Dragon 2 widely seen as the series and studio peak.

It's a competent live-action retelling, but most reviews and fan reactions point out it rarely does anything the 2010 animated original didn't already do better.

How many Shrek movies are there?

Four mainline films: Shrek, Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After, plus the Puss in Boots spinoffs which we ranked separately.
