Twenty-seven items, one golden arch, a whole lot of arguments. We pulled together what fans and critics actually say in forums, reviews and late-night drive-thru debates to rank the McDonald's menu from the French fry that everyone agrees is great to the chicken sandwich that just never had a chance.
This covers the real greatest hits: burgers, breakfast, desserts, the works. Some placements will make you mad. That's the point. Disagree with us in your head, then go order a McFlurry and feel better about life.

SS Tier: The Menu's Hall of Fame

French Fries
The single most agreed-upon great thing McDonald's makes. Crispy outside, soft inside, salted just right, and somehow better than fries from places that try way harder. This is the benchmark every other fast food fry gets measured against.
About French Fries
McDonald's thin-cut, salted fries are widely considered one of the best fast food fries available anywhere. They're cooked to a crisp exterior with a soft interior and are a near-universal add-on to any order.

Big Mac
Two patties, special sauce, that middle bun nobody else bothered to copy. It's been the flagship since 1968 and it still holds up as the thing people picture when they picture McDonald's. Not the best burger on the menu by taste alone, but the most important one by a mile.
About Big Mac
McDonald's signature double-patty burger with special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions on a three-piece sesame seed bun. It's been a core menu item since 1968 and is often used as an informal measure of fast food prices worldwide (the Big Mac Index).

- Special sauce, three-part bun

McFlurry
Soft serve plus crushed Oreo or M&M's mixed in by that spinning cup, and somehow it never gets old. Fans fight about which mix-in is best but nobody argues the format itself. A genuine dessert innovation that other chains still haven't matched.

- Mix-ins

Egg McMuffin
The sandwich that basically invented fast food breakfast as a category. Egg, Canadian bacon, American cheese, English muffin, done. Critics point to this one specifically when they talk about McDonald's actually getting something right from scratch.
About Egg McMuffin
A breakfast sandwich with egg, Canadian bacon and American cheese on an English muffin, widely credited with helping establish fast food breakfast as a category.
AA Tier: Order With Confidence

Chicken McNuggets
Nine or ten pieces of nostalgia, best with sweet and sour sauce if you grew up in the right decade. Consistency is the whole game here and McDonald's nails it nugget after nugget. The dipping sauce lineup does a lot of heavy lifting too.

Sausage McMuffin with Egg
The Egg McMuffin's heavier cousin and for plenty of fans the actually better order. Sausage patty adds the grease and salt the original sometimes lacks. A breakfast menu built on two sandwiches and this is the other one.

BB Tier: Solid, No Notes

Filet-O-Fish
A genuinely loyal fanbase defends this one hard, usually with a story about Lent or a childhood road trip. Tartar sauce and that steamed bun are either comforting or weird depending who you ask. We land on solid, dependable, not flashy.
About Filet-O-Fish
A sandwich with a breaded fish patty, tartar sauce and a slice of cheese on a steamed bun. It was created to give Catholic customers a meat free option, particularly for Fridays during Lent.
- Type

About McDouble
A value menu burger with two beef patties and a single slice of cheese, along with onions, pickles, ketchup and mustard. It's positioned as a budget friendly alternative to the Double Cheeseburger.
- Type

Cheeseburger
Simple, cheap, reliable, and the one a lot of kids order before they graduate to anything bigger. It's not trying to impress anyone and that's sort of the appeal. Ketchup, mustard, pickle, onion, done.
About Cheeseburger
A step up from the classic hamburger, adding a slice of American cheese to the beef patty, ketchup, mustard, onions and pickles. It has been a mainstay of the McDonald's value menu for decades.
- Type

Happy Meal
Less about the food, more about the toy and the box, and everyone knows it. The food inside is usually a small burger or nuggets with apple slices, nothing special on its own. Still a cultural institution that's outlasted plenty of toy fads.
About Happy Meal
A meal bundle designed for children, including a small main item, a side, a drink and a toy. It has been a core part of McDonald's family marketing strategy since 1979.
- Type

Hotcakes
Three fluffy pancakes with syrup and a pat of butter, and they're genuinely good when you've got time to sit and eat breakfast properly. Loses points only because the McGriddles exist and basically steal its syrup trick.

- Type

A simple soft serve vanilla ice cream cone, known for its swirl shape and affordable price point. It has long been one of McDonald's most popular low cost dessert items.
- Type

McDonald's answer to the whole chicken sandwich wars that other chains started. Crunchy, juicy, pickles doing real work. Came out strong but it's still playing catch-up to sandwiches that got there first.

Shamrock Shake
The seasonal hype item that shows up every spring and disappears before you've had enough of it. Mint shake, whipped cream, cherry on top if you're lucky. Scarcity is doing at least half the work on this one's reputation.

A mint flavored milkshake with a green color, released as a limited time seasonal item around St. Patrick's Day. It has a cult following and returns to the menu only part of the year.

CC Tier: Fine, But Don't Oversell It

Hot Fudge Sundae
Fine, perfectly fine, but it gets overshadowed by the McFlurry every single time on every menu board. The fudge is good and the whole thing is cheap, it's just rarely anyone's first choice anymore.
About Hot Fudge Sundae
A dessert consisting of vanilla soft serve topped with warm hot fudge sauce. It's a classic McDonald's sundae option that has been on the menu for decades.
- Type
- Sundae
- Category
- Dessert

Chocolate Shake
Does the job, nothing more. It's thinner than a lot of fans want a fast food shake to be, and it lives in the shadow of both the McFlurry and whatever seasonal shake is currently in rotation.
About Chocolate Shake
A thick, cold milkshake made with chocolate flavoring and soft serve, blended to a smooth, sippable consistency. It's one of McDonald's longstanding dessert drink options alongside vanilla and strawberry.
- Type
- Milkshake
- Category

Double Quarter Pounder
More beef, more cheese, more of everything except restraint. Fans of the regular Quarter Pounder are split on whether this improves it or just makes it harder to eat without a fork. We say it's good but rarely necessary.
About Double Quarter Pounder
A burger featuring two quarter pound beef patties, cheese, onions, pickles, ketchup and mustard on a sesame seed bun. It's a larger, heartier version of the classic Quarter Pounder with Cheese.
- Type

Baked Apple Pie
That crispy fried shell and hot cinnamon apple filling used to be a bigger deal before it got switched to baked. Still decent, still a nostalgia play for a lot of people, but the current version gets compared unfavorably to the old fried one constantly.

A hand held dessert pastry with a crispy, baked crust filled with warm apple filling. It replaced the chain's original fried apple pie in the US in 1992.
- Type

Hamburger
The most basic thing on the menu and it mostly exists as a building block for a Cheeseburger or McDouble. Nobody's ordering this on purpose as their main event. Cheap, fine, forgettable.
About Hamburger
McDonald's most basic burger, consisting of a single beef patty with ketchup, mustard, onions and pickles on a plain bun. It's one of the chain's original menu items and remains one of its cheapest offerings.
- Type
- Burger
- Category

DD Tier: Only If You Must

McRib
A genuinely divisive item that disappears and returns like a horror movie villain, and fans either treat its comeback like a holiday or ignore it completely. The barbecue sauce and onions do most of the flavor work since the pork patty itself is pretty polarizing. We get the cult following, we just don't fully share it.
About McRib
A boneless pork sandwich shaped to resemble ribs, served with barbecue sauce, onions and pickles on a roll. It's famous for its limited time availability, generating hype each time it returns.
- Type
- Pork sandwich
- Category
- Limited time item

McPlant
McDonald's attempt at a plant-based burger that never really found its audience and has quietly vanished from a lot of menus. The patty itself isn't bad, it's just that nobody was asking McDonald's specifically for this. Limited rollout, limited enthusiasm.
About McPlant
A plant based burger made with a pea protein patty, developed by McDonald's in partnership with Beyond Meat. It was created to offer a vegetarian and vegan friendly alternative to the chain's beef burgers.
- Type
- Plant based burger

FF Tier: Why Does This Still Exist

McChicken
A sandwich kept alive almost entirely by its dollar menu price tag and a cult of fans who like it ironically as much as genuinely. Thin fried patty, mayo, shredded lettuce, bun, and that's really it. It works as a $1 impulse buy and falls apart the second you expect an actual chicken sandwich.
About McChicken
A fast food chicken sandwich sold by McDonald's, consisting of a breaded chicken patty topped with shredded lettuce and mayonnaise on a plain bun. It has long been one of the chain's budget-friendly menu staples.
- Main ingredients
- Breaded chicken patty, lettuce, mayonnaise, bun
- Positioning
- Often featured on McDonald's value/dollar menu
How we ranked them
We weighed consistency (does it taste the same in Ohio and Oregon), value for money, cultural staying power, and how often each item comes up as someone's go-to order versus their biggest regret. Fan forums and food critic takes broke ties. When the internet genuinely split down the middle, we said so and picked a side anyway.

Rank these yourselfFAQ
What is the best item on the McDonald's menu?
By broad consensus among fans and critics, the French Fries and the Big Mac sit at the top, with the McFlurry and Egg McMuffin right behind them.
Is the McRib actually good?
It's genuinely divisive. Some fans treat every return as an event, others think the hype outpaces the actual sandwich. We put it in the lower-middle of the pack.
Why is the McChicken ranked so low?
It's mostly kept relevant by its low price rather than its quality. As a dollar menu item it makes sense, as a standalone chicken sandwich it struggles to compete with newer options like the McCrispy.
What's the most underrated item at McDonald's?
Hash Browns get overlooked constantly in favor of the bigger breakfast sandwiches, but plenty of fans quietly consider them one of the best things on the whole menu.
Is the McPlant still available?
It's had a limited rollout in select markets rather than a full nationwide launch, and hasn't become a permanent fixture everywhere.
