Stranger Things Seasons Ranked: All 5 Tiered
The Upside Down closed its doors for good at the end of 2025, so it's time to settle the argument: which seasons of Stranger Things actually hold up? We're ranking all five, from the Hawkins lab escape that started it all to the theater-released finale that wrapped things up.
This list pulls from what fans and critics have been saying for years on forums, in reviews, and in every "which season is best" debate that resurfaces whenever a new one drops. Where the fandom splits (and it does, hard, on a couple of these), we tell you and give you our take. Disagree? That's half the fun of a show about parallel dimensions.

SS Tier: The gold standard

Season 1
The one that didn't need a bigger budget or a Russian subplot to work. Will's disappearance, the walkie-talkie code words, Eleven's Eggo obsession, it's all restraint and mood, and it still hits harder than anything that came after. Almost nobody argues with this being the peak. It first aired in 2016.
About Season 1
The 2016 debut season that introduced Hawkins, Eleven, and the Upside Down. Eight episodes built around Will Byers' disappearance and the government lab experiments behind it.
- Released
- 2016
- Episodes
- 8

Season 2
The Dustin-and-Dart storyline, Bob Newby's sacrifice, Eleven finding Kali, this season took the formula and deepened it instead of just repeating it. A few critics call it a retread, but most fans say it's aged into the show's most rewatchable stretch, trailer and all.
About Season 2
Set a year after Will's rescue, this season deals with his lingering trauma and introduces the Mind Flayer as the show's next big threat.
- Released
- 2017
- Episodes
- 9
AA Tier: Still great TV

Season 4
Long episodes, sure, but Vecna's backstory and Eddie Munson's Master of Puppets moment gave the show a real jolt of energy after Season 3 lost the plot a bit. It sets up the finale better than anything since Season 1, even if the Hawkins Lab flashbacks drag.
About Season 4
Split across two volumes, this season splinters the core group across states and introduces Vecna, the season's central villain, along with fan-favorite Eddie Munson.
- Released
- 2022
- Episodes
- 9
BB Tier: Fun but flawed

Season 3
Starcourt Mall is fun, the Scoops Ahoy uniforms are a good bit, and the Battle of Starcourt has real stakes. But this is where the show swapped grounded dread for Russian secret agents and broader comedy, and the tonal whiplash is exactly what fans point to when they say the series started drifting.
About Season 3
Set in summer 1985 around the new Starcourt Mall, this season pits the group against Russian operatives and a new, more monstrous incarnation of the Mind Flayer.
- Released
- 2019
- Episodes
- 8
CC Tier: Divisive and drags

Season 5
Ambitious, emotional, and shot like a finale should be, right down to the theatrical release in 350 theaters. But it's also the most divisive season the show has made: critics were largely kind, audiences were not, and a lot of the backlash centers on how Will and Eleven's arcs got handled. Big swing, mixed landing.
About Season 5
The final season, released in three installments ending with a finale that got a rare combined theatrical and streaming release.
- Released
- Nov-Dec 2025
- Finale release
- Theaters and Netflix, Dec 31 2025
How we ranked them
We weighed critical consensus, audience scores, and the recurring themes in fan discussions: pacing, tone, character work, and whether a season felt like it earned its scares or just leaned on spectacle. Nostalgia counts for something too, but it doesn't cover for sloppy plotting. When critics and audiences disagreed (looking at you, Season 5), we said so and explained which way we leaned.
