SpongeBob SquarePants Characters Tier List

Bikini Bottom has a deep bench. Twenty-five-plus years in and the show still runs on a small cast of characters who each nailed a specific flavor of funny, from boundless optimism to pure corporate greed. We ranked all 11 mainstays by how much they actually carry an episode, how quotable they are, and how well they've aged outside the show itself (memes, merch, cultural footprint, the works).

This list leans on what fans argue about constantly on forums and comment sections, plus our own read where the debate doesn't settle cleanly. Disagree with where we put your favorite? That's half the fun. Rank them yourself and see how close you land.

SpongeBob SquarePants

The whole show works because he works. SpongeBob's blend of childlike joy and weird intensity (see: the entire Krusty Krab training montage, or just him blowing bubbles like it's a competitive sport) is why this cartoon is still on 20-plus years later. He's one of the few cartoon leads who's funny as a sweetheart and funny as a lunatic.

About SpongeBob SquarePants

The title character of the Nickelodeon series, a relentlessly optimistic sea sponge who works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab. Created by marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg.

Patrick Star

Patrick is proof that a character can be dumb as a rock and still be the smartest joke in the room. His confidence never wavers no matter how wrong he is, and that's the bit. 'Is mayonnaise an instrument?' is doing more comedic work than most sitcoms manage in a season.

About Patrick Star

SpongeBob's best friend, a pink starfish known for his low intelligence and unwavering loyalty. He lives under a rock in Bikini Bottom.

Squidward Tentacles

The most relatable guy in Bikini Bottom precisely because he hates everyone around him. Squidward's misery is the straight man energy the show needs, and his failed art and clarinet careers hit harder as you get older and realize you might be Squidward.

About Squidward Tentacles

SpongeBob's neighbor and coworker, an octopus who dreams of being a famous artist and clarinet player. His misery at working the Krusty Krab register is a running theme.

Occupation
Cashier, Krusty Krab
Species

AA Tier: Essential, not quite top shelf

Mr. Krabs

Mr. Krabs

A boss so cheap he'd charge you for the air in the Krusty Krab, and somehow still charming about it. Early seasons balance his greed with real warmth for SpongeBob and Pearl; later seasons lean so hard into the money jokes that he occasionally tips into villain territory, which is why he's not quite top tier.

About Mr. Krabs

Owner of the Krusty Krab restaurant, a crab famous for his love of money above almost everything else. He's also Pearl's father.

Occupation
Owner, Krusty Krab

Sandy Cheeks

A squirrel in a diving suit doing karate underwater shouldn't work as well as it does. Sandy's Texas pride and scientist brain give Bikini Bottom its one voice of actual competence, and her friendship with SpongeBob is some of the show's most genuine material.

About Sandy Cheeks

A squirrel from Texas who lives in an air-filled dome in Bikini Bottom and works as a scientist. She's an expert in karate and proud of her land-mammal roots.

Plankton

Every scheme fails, every Chum Bucket customer count stays at zero, and somehow he keeps coming back swinging. Plankton's tiny stature versus his massive ego is a great running joke, and his marriage to Karen gives him more texture than most cartoon villains get.

About Plankton

Owner of the failing Chum Bucket restaurant and Mr. Krabs' rival, forever scheming to steal the Krabby Patty formula. Married to the computer Karen.

Occupation
Owner, Chum Bucket
Spouse
Karen the computer

Mrs. Puff

Mrs. Puff

A boating teacher who's been driven to the edge by one student for decades deserves more credit than she gets. Mrs. Puff is funniest in small doses, the slow burn, the inflating-with-rage gag, the jail time she's clearly served too many times because of SpongeBob.

About Mrs. Puff

A pufferfish who runs Bikini Bottom's boating school, where SpongeBob has repeatedly failed his driving test. She inflates dramatically when stressed, which is often.

Occupation
Boating instructor
Pearl Krabs

Pearl Krabs

A teenage whale who's embarrassed by literally everything her dad does, which, fair. Pearl doesn't get the screen time of the big names, but when she's on, the generational clash between her and Mr. Krabs is sharp, specific teen comedy.

About Pearl Krabs

Mr. Krabs' teenage daughter, a whale despite her father being a crab. She's into fashion, pop culture and typical teenage interests, often at odds with her dad's cheapness.

Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy

Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy

Two senior citizen superheroes bickering like an old married couple is a joke that keeps paying off. They're a blast in small doses but the formula (yelling, hearing aids, villain of the week) wears thin if you binge too many of their episodes back to back.

About Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy

Two elderly retired superheroes who were SpongeBob and Patrick's childhood idols. They still fight crime despite their age and fading powers.

Role

Gary the Snail

Gary meows. That's basically the whole character, and it's a genuinely funny choice, a snail that sounds like a cat is a weird little gag that never stops being weird. He just doesn't have the range to rank higher, he's a pet, not a comedian.

About Gary the Snail

SpongeBob's pet sea snail, who communicates by meowing like a cat instead of any typical snail sound. He's a calm, low-key presence in SpongeBob's otherwise chaotic life.

DoodleBob

A fan favorite nightmare-fuel creation from one specific episode, DoodleBob is more meme than character at this point. He's genuinely unsettling and a blast as a one-off, but there's just not much to rank beyond 'that weird drawing that came to life that one time.'

About DoodleBob

A crude 2D drawing of SpongeBob that comes to life and causes chaos, from a single well-known episode. He's since become a major internet meme figure, often recast as a horror character by fans.

Origin
Single episode appearance

How we ranked them

We weighed comedic consistency across seasons, how essential each character is to the show's identity, quotability and meme life outside the show, and depth (does the character have more than one note to play). Characters who peaked early or got flanderized hard over the seasons lost ground, while ones who stayed funny or got richer with age moved up.

FAQ

Who is the most popular SpongeBob character?

SpongeBob and Patrick consistently top fan polls and merch sales, with Squidward close behind as the favorite among older viewers.

Is DoodleBob a real recurring character?

Not really. DoodleBob comes from a single episode where SpongeBob's drawing comes to life, but he's become a huge internet meme since.

Why do fans argue about Mr. Krabs?

Early seasons show him as greedy but caring, while later seasons push his money obsession so far that some fans feel he turned into more of a villain than a boss.

Is Gary actually a cat?

No, Gary is a snail. The joke is that he meows like a cat instead of making any snail-like sound.

Who is Plankton's wife?

Karen, the computer system that runs the Chum Bucket. She's often the voice of reason to Plankton's schemes.
