Taylor Swift Eras Tier List: Every Album Ranked

Twelve albums, one very online fandom, and a lot of strong opinions. We're ranking every Taylor Swift era from the self-titled debut to The Life of a Showgirl, based on what actually holds up: the songwriting, the sonic identity, the singles, and how each record aged once the discourse died down.

This isn't just a vibes-based list. We pulled from years of fan forum arguments, critic reviews, and re-listens to figure out where the consensus lands, then broke the ties ourselves when Swifties couldn't agree. Disagree with where we put Lover or Evermore? Good. That's the point. Rank it yourself and see if you land somewhere different.

SS Tier: The untouchables

Folklore
Cover: Wikipedia

Folklore

The pandemic album that shouldn't have worked as well as it did. Trading pop hooks for Aaron Dessner's indie-folk production and third-person storytelling (the Betty/James/Augustine teenage love triangle) was a genuine artistic swing, and it connected. 'Cardigan' and 'August' hit as hard on the hundredth listen as the first.

About Folklore

A surprise-released 2020 album made during lockdown with The National's Aaron Dessner, trading pop production for indie-folk storytelling.

Released
2020
Genre
Indie folk
Red
Cover: Wikipedia

Red

The one where heartbreak got widescreen. 'All Too Well' (especially the 10-minute version) is the song most fans point to as her best ever, and the record swings from 'State of Grace' to 'I Knew You Were Trouble' without losing itself. Red Taylor's Version only cemented how ahead of its time this one was.

About Red

A genre-blending 2012 album that moved further into pop while keeping country roots, home to 'All Too Well' and 'I Knew You Were Trouble.'

Released
2012
Genre
Pop, country
1989
Cover: Wikipedia

1989

The full pop reinvention, and it's hard to argue with the results: 'Blank Space,' 'Style,' 'Out of the Woods.' Max Martin's fingerprints are all over it, but it never feels like a generic pop record because the songwriting specificity is still there. This is the era that turned her into a global pop star, full stop.

About 1989

Her full pivot into synth-pop, released in 2014 and produced largely with Max Martin and Shellback. It includes 'Shake It Off,' 'Blank Space,' and 'Style.'

Released
2014
Genre
Synth-pop

AA Tier: Era-defining greatness

Fearless
Cover: Wikipedia

Fearless

The one that built the foundation: country-pop hooks, teenage romance as epic drama, and 'Love Story' as the song that made her a household name. It's a little simpler than what came later, but the earnestness is the whole appeal.

About Fearless

Her second album, a country-pop breakout featuring 'Love Story' and 'You Belong with Me.' It won Album of the Year at the Grammys for Midnights, not for an early album. Fearless, 1989, and Folklore also won Album of the Year.

Released
2008
Genre
Country pop
Speak Now
Cover: Wikipedia

Speak Now

Written entirely solo, which fans never let you forget, and the self-sufficiency shows in how personal it feels. 'Dear John' and 'Enchanted' are among her most quoted deep cuts, even if the back half drags a little compared to the opening run.

About Speak Now

A fully solo-written album released in 2010, known for its theatrical storytelling and confessional songs like 'Dear John' and 'Mean.'

Released
2010
Genre
Country pop
Evermore
Cover: Wikipedia

Evermore

Folklore's sister album, released just months later, and some fans actually prefer it. 'Willow' and 'Champagne Problems' are gorgeous, and the title track with Bon Iver is one of the eeriest things she's ever put out. It loses a notch to Folklore mostly for feeling less essential on arrival.

About Evermore

Released just months after Folklore in 2020, continuing its folk sound with collaborators including Bon Iver and The National.

Released
2020
Genre
Indie folk

BB Tier: Really good, just not top-shelf

Midnights
Cover: Wikipedia

Midnights

A victory lap dressed up as a concept album about 13 sleepless nights, and it mostly works. 'Anti-Hero' became inescapable for good reason, but the record's back half (the 3am tracks) outshines a chunk of the proper tracklist, which is an odd thing to say about a lead album.

About Midnights

A 2022 concept album framed around 13 sleepless nights, featuring 'Anti-Hero' and a vault of extra '3am' tracks released alongside it.

Released
2022
Genre
Synth-pop
Reputation
Cover: Wikipedia

Reputation

Divisive by design. The 'Look What You Made Me Do' era leans hard into bombast and petty revenge, which some fans find thrilling and others find exhausting. But buried in the back half is some of her most tender writing ('Dress,' 'New Year's Day'), and that contrast is underrated.

About Reputation

A darker, bass-heavy 2017 record responding to public scrutiny, led by the single 'Look What You Made Me Do.'

Released
2017
Genre
Electropop
Taylor Swift (Debut)
Cover: Wikipedia

Taylor Swift (Debut)

Charming because it's unpolished. A teenager writing about crushes and small-town Pennsylvania life, with 'Tim McGraw' and 'Our Song' showing the songwriting instincts that would carry her entire career. It's slight compared to later work, but it's the clearest blueprint of what was coming.

About Taylor Swift (Debut)

Taylor Swift's first studio album, released in 2006, built around country-pop songs written largely during her teenage years. It introduced her signature style of narrative, diary-like songwriting.

Released
2006
Genre
Country

CC Tier: Solid but uneven

Lover
Cover: Wikipedia

Lover

A genuinely split fandom entry: some call it underrated, others call it bloated. Both are kind of right. 'Cruel Summer' has become one of her biggest songs years after release, but the 18-track runtime means a lot of filler sits next to the highlights, and the whole thing feels like two different albums stitched together.

About Lover

A bright, romance-themed 2019 album featuring 'Cruel Summer' and the title track, marking a tonal shift away from Reputation's darkness.

Released
2019
Genre
Pop
The Tortured Poets Department
Cover: Wikipedia

The Tortured Poets Department

A sprawling double album that critics and fans argue about constantly, and for good reason. There's real writing here ('loml,' 'The Black Dog'), but at 31 tracks on the extended version, the sheer volume works against it. It needed an editor more than it needed another bonus track.

About The Tortured Poets Department

A 2024 double album exploring heartbreak and fame at length, released as both a standard and extended version with over 30 tracks combined.

Released
2024
Genre
Pop, alternative

DD Tier: The weak link

The Life of a Showgirl
Cover: Wikipedia

The Life of a Showgirl

Early consensus suggests it's a lighter, glitzier listen that doesn't quite land with the emotional weight fans expect from a Swift album, though it's early days for this one to fully settle.

About The Life of a Showgirl

Her most recent album, described as a glitzier, pop-forward project following the Eras Tour.

How we ranked them

We weighed songwriting quality and consistency across the tracklist, cultural impact at release, how well the era has aged, and the strength of its singles versus its deep cuts. Critical reception mattered, but so did the sustained fan love (or fan fatigue) that shows up in forums and re-listen habits years later. Where the fandom is genuinely split, we say so and explain why we landed where we did.

FAQ

What is Taylor Swift's best album according to fans and critics?

Folklore, Red, and 1989 are the three most commonly cited as her best, though which one takes the top spot depends entirely on who you ask. Folklore wins critics over with its songwriting shift, Red wins fans over with its emotional range, and 1989 wins on pure pop craft.

Which Taylor Swift era is the most divisive among fans?

Reputation and Lover both split the fandom hard. Reputation's dark, defiant tone turns some fans off while others consider it essential, and Lover gets criticized for being overstuffed despite containing some of her biggest hits.

Are Folklore and Evermore considered one era or two?

They're technically separate albums but are often treated as sister records because of their shared indie-folk sound, overlapping release timeline, and shared collaborators like Aaron Dessner and Bon Iver.

What is the lowest-ranked Taylor Swift album in general consensus?

This shifts depending on when you ask, but newer or more divisive records tend to land lowest until enough time passes for fans to reassess them. Older low-ranked picks have often climbed back up over time.

Which Taylor Swift album has the most re-recordings?

As of the Taylor's Version project, several of her earlier albums have been re-recorded, including Fearless and Red, with Red's re-release notably adding the 10-minute version of 'All Too Well.'
