Tier list

Pink Floyd Albums Ranked: Every Studio Record, Worst to Best

Fifteen albums, two completely different bands wearing the same name. There's the Syd Barrett psych outfit, the Roger Waters concept-album machine, and the Gilmour-led version that closed things out. Ranking all of it in one list means putting Dark Side of the Moon next to Ummagumma, which feels a little unfair to Ummagumma.

This list pulls from decades of fan debate, critic reviews, and the stuff people argue about on forums at 2am (The Final Cut vs Division Bell, mostly). We've picked sides where fans disagree. Now you pick yours.

SS Tier: The untouchables

The Dark Side of the Moon

The one that needs no introduction. Every track flows into the next, the themes of time, money, and madness still land, and 'Money' remains one of rock's weirdest hit singles thanks to that 7/4 time signature. It sold forever for a reason.

About The Dark Side of the Moon

The band's landmark 1973 concept album exploring themes of time, greed, and mental illness. One of the best-selling albums in history.

Wish You Were Here

Wish You Were Here

Warmer and sadder than Dark Side, built entirely around missing Syd Barrett. 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' bookending the record is the best structural trick the band ever pulled, and the title track is the closest thing they have to a campfire song.

About Wish You Were Here

A 1975 concept album dealing with absence and the music industry, dedicated in large part to former bandmate Syd Barrett.

1975

Animals
Cover: Wikipedia

Animals

Bleak, long-form, and underrated next to its two more famous neighbors. The three monster tracks ('Dogs,' 'Pigs,' 'Sheep') are Waters at his angriest, and the Battersea Power Station cover art says everything the lyrics don't.

About Animals

A 1977 concept album loosely inspired by George Orwell's 'Animal Farm,' dividing society into pigs, dogs, and sheep.

1977

AA Tier: Essential Floyd

The Wall
Cover: Wikipedia

The Wall

A sprawling double album about isolation that somehow produced a disco-adjacent number one single in 'Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2.' It's bloated in places and brilliant in others, which is kind of the whole point of the story.

About The Wall

A 1979 rock opera double album about isolation and trauma, later adapted into a feature film in 1982.

1979

Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2
Meddle

Meddle

The hinge point where the band figured out how to be Pink Floyd. 'Echoes' takes up the whole second side and basically previews Dark Side's ambition, while 'One of These Days' is as close to a rock banger as this band gets.

About Meddle

A 1971 album often seen as the turning point toward the band's classic 1970s sound, anchored by the side-long track 'Echoes.'

1971

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Cover: Wikipedia

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn

Syd Barrett's one true studio statement with the band, all whimsy and acid-fried edges. 'Astronomy Domine' and 'Interstellar Overdrive' still sound genuinely strange, not just old. Fans who prefer this era to the Waters years have a real case.

About The Piper at the Gates of Dawn

Pink Floyd's debut album, released in 1967 and led almost entirely by Syd Barrett. Known for its psychedelic, whimsical sound that differs sharply from the band's later work.

Released
1967
Key track
Astronomy Domine

BB Tier: Solid, divisive, or both

A Saucerful of Secrets

A Saucerful of Secrets

The transition record, Barrett fading out and Gilmour stepping in, with one foot still in the psych-pop of Piper. The title track's extended instrumental passage points toward where the band was headed next.

About A Saucerful of Secrets

The 1968 follow-up album and the only one to feature both Syd Barrett and his replacement David Gilmour. Marks the band's shift away from Barrett's songwriting.

Released
1968
The Final Cut
Cover: Wikipedia

The Final Cut

Basically a Roger Waters solo album with the band's name on it, built around grief for his father and anger at the Falklands War. Divisive among fans for good reason, it's heavy-handed, but 'The Gunner's Dream' is genuinely devastating.

About The Final Cut

A 1983 album written largely by Roger Waters, dealing with the legacy of World War II and the Falklands War. His last studio album with the band.

Released
1983
The Division Bell
Cover: Wikipedia

The Division Bell

The Gilmour-era record that actually has songs people remember, especially 'High Hopes' closing things out on a genuinely moving note. Not essential, but a legitimate comeback after the previous album's reputation.

About The Division Bell

A 1994 album often seen as a stronger return to form for the Gilmour-led lineup, closing with the song 'High Hopes.'

Released
1994
Key track
High Hopes

CC Tier: Interesting experiments

Atom Heart Mother
Cover: Wikipedia

Atom Heart Mother

A title-track suite with brass, choir, and a cow on the cover, which tells you most of what you need to know. Ambitious and a little ridiculous, fans are split on whether it's a bold experiment or a mess that doesn't earn its length.

About Atom Heart Mother

A 1970 album centered on a lengthy title suite combining rock instrumentation with brass and choir, co-written with composer Ron Geesin.

Obscured by Clouds
Cover: Wikipedia

Obscured by Clouds

A quick, overlooked soundtrack record for the film 'La Vallée' that gets lost between Atom Heart Mother and Dark Side. Modest and underrated in small doses, but there's a reason casual fans have never heard of it.

About Obscured by Clouds

A 1972 soundtrack album for the French film 'La Vallée,' released shortly before the band's commercial breakthrough.

More

Another soundtrack job, this one scrappier and more folk-leaning than people expect from this band. Worth a listen for 'Cymbaline' and 'The Nile Song' alone, even if the record as a whole feels like a contractual obligation.

About More

A soundtrack album for the film 'More,' released in 1969. A shorter, song-based record compared to the band's other work at the time.

DD Tier: For completists only

A Momentary Lapse of Reason
Cover: Wikipedia

A Momentary Lapse of Reason

The first post-Waters album, and it sounds like a Gilmour solo record wearing a Pink Floyd logo for legal reasons. 'Learning to Fly' is fine, but the rest struggles to justify the name on the cover.

About A Momentary Lapse of Reason

The first Pink Floyd studio album after Roger Waters' departure, released in 1987 and led by David Gilmour.

Ummagumma
Cover: Wikipedia

Ummagumma

Half live album, half each member doing their own solo experiment, and the studio half is a genuine slog for most listeners. Interesting as a curiosity about where their heads were at in 1969, less interesting as something you'd actually replay.

About Ummagumma

A 1969 double album split between a live disc and a studio disc of solo compositions by each band member.

Released
1969
Format
Double album, live and studio

FF Tier: Skippable, even for fans

The Endless River
Cover: Wikipedia

The Endless River

An instrumental album assembled from leftover Division Bell sessions after Richard Wright's death, mostly as a tribute. Pleasant as background music, but it's the one record here that barely feels like an album at all, more like a long B-side compilation.

About The Endless River

Released in 2014, this mostly instrumental album was built from unreleased Division Bell sessions and served partly as a tribute to keyboardist Richard Wright, who died in 2008.

Released
2014
Type
Mostly instrumental

How we ranked them

We weighed critical reputation, influence, and how these albums actually hold up as listens decades later, not just as historical artifacts. Concept and cohesion mattered, so did individual songwriting. We leaned on consensus from reviews and long-running fan debates, then broke ties with our own judgment where the fanbase genuinely splits, like Waters-era versus Gilmour-era records.

FAQ

What is Pink Floyd's best album?

Most critics and fans point to The Dark Side of the Moon, though Wish You Were Here and Animals both have serious followings as the 'true' best Floyd record.

What is Pink Floyd's worst album?

The Endless River tends to land at the bottom of most fan rankings since it's an instrumental tribute record stitched together from old sessions rather than a proper album.

Which Pink Floyd albums feature Syd Barrett?

Barrett led The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and contributed to parts of A Saucerful of Secrets before leaving the band in 1968.

Is The Wall better than The Dark Side of the Moon?

It's a long-running fan argument. Dark Side usually wins on cohesion and consistency, while The Wall wins on ambition and sheer scale for those who prefer its story-driven approach.

Why is The Final Cut so divisive?

It was written almost entirely by Roger Waters during the band's internal breakdown, so it feels more like a solo record, and its heavy political and personal themes split listeners.
