Eminem Albums Tier List: All 12 Ranked
Twelve albums, one of the most polarizing catalogs in rap. Some of these records changed what pop culture was allowed to say out loud. Others feel like a guy who already won every argument still trying to win arguments. We went through fan forums, critic reviews and years of debate to rank all 12 studio albums from essential to skippable.
This is a consensus build, not just our gut. Where fans split hard (and they do, especially on anything post-2009), we picked a side and told you why.

SS Tier: The untouchables

The Marshall Mathers LP
This is the one. 'Stan' alone would justify the legacy, but then you've got 'The Way I Am' and 'Kim' turning personal rage into something genuinely unsettling. It's the record where the shock value, the technical rapping and the actual songwriting all lined up at once. Twenty-plus years later it still gets cited as a top-tier rap album, not just a top-tier Eminem album.
About The Marshall Mathers LP
Widely considered his defining album, blending dark humor, controversy and technical rapping. It became one of the fastest-selling rap albums of its era.
- Released
- 2000
- Key single
- Stan

The Eminem Show
More ambitious and more personal than MMLP, trading some of the pure shock for actual introspection on tracks like 'Cleanin' Out My Closet'. 'Sing for the Moment' sampling Aerosmith shouldn't work as well as it does. Fans argue endlessly about whether this or MMLP is the best, and honestly that argument is the whole point: both are that good.
About The Eminem Show
A more introspective and politically charged album, dealing with fame, family and identity. Includes 'Cleanin' Out My Closet' and 'Without Me'.
- Released
- 2002
AA Tier: Genuinely great

The Slim Shady LP
The introduction, and it still sounds unhinged in a good way. 'My Name Is' and 'Guilty Conscience' set up the whole Slim Shady persona that would define a decade of controversy. It's rougher and goofier than what came after, but that's part of the charm, this is before the weight of fame got into everything.
About The Slim Shady LP
Eminem's major label debut, introducing the Slim Shady alter ego to the mainstream. Produced largely with Dr. Dre, it launched his career with singles like 'My Name Is'.
- Released
- 1999
- Key single
- My Name Is

Recovery
The comeback nobody fully expected after Relapse got lukewarm reviews. 'Not Afraid' is a genuine arena anthem and the album as a whole feels like someone climbing out of a hole in real time. Critics were kinder to this on release than fans have been since, but the consensus has mostly settled on this being underrated.
About Recovery
A comeback album addressing addiction and recovery, featuring the hit single 'Not Afraid'. Marked a shift away from Relapse's accented delivery.
- Released
- 2010
- Key single
- Not Afraid

Music to Be Murdered By
A surprise drop that turned out to be one of his tightest modern records. The Hitchcock framing is a gimmick but the rapping on tracks like 'Godzilla' with Juice WRLD is some of the fastest, most technically dense stuff he's done in years. Fans who'd written off 2010s Eminem got pulled back in by this one.
About Music to Be Murdered By
A surprise album built around a Hitchcock-inspired concept, notable for dense, technical rapping and a late feature from Juice WRLD.
- Released
- 2020
BB Tier: Solid, with real flaws

Relapse
The accents get a lot of grief, and fairly so, the fake Slim Shady voice wears thin over a full tracklist. But underneath the gimmicks is some of his most technically complex rapping ever, the internal rhyme schemes on this thing are genuinely wild. It's a flawed album that technical-rap nerds still defend hard.
About Relapse
Marked his return after a hiatus, featuring a horrorcore theme and exaggerated accents throughout. Praised for technical complexity, criticized for its vocal choices.
- Released
- 2009

The Marshall Mathers LP 2
Calling back to the original MMLP was a bold move and it mostly pays off, 'Rap God' is a legitimate technical showcase and 'Headlights' is one of the more sincere songs he's written. It runs long and the back half sags, but there's real craft here, not just nostalgia-bait.
About The Marshall Mathers LP 2
A thematic sequel to the 2000 album, featuring 'Rap God' and 'Headlights'. Produced largely with Rick Rubin alongside longtime collaborator Dr. Dre.
- Released
- 2013

Kamikaze
A furious response to Revival's reception, and it works best as pure venting. 'Not Alike' and the Machine Gun Kelly beef track give it energy, even if some of the targets feel like punching down. Fans were split on the pettiness but mostly agreed the bars themselves were sharp again.
About Kamikaze
A surprise release responding directly to the criticism of Revival, featuring a more aggressive, stripped-down sound and several diss tracks.
- Released
- 2018
CC Tier: Mixed bag

Encore
Has real moments, 'Mockingbird' is genuinely moving, but it's also the album with 'Just Lose It' and a handful of skits that haven't aged well at all. Made during a rough personal stretch and it shows, talent is still there but the focus isn't.
About Encore
Released during a difficult personal period for Eminem, mixing serious tracks like 'Mockingbird' with more comedic, lower-regarded material.
- Released
- 2004

Revival
The one most fans point to as the misfire. The Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé features feel like chasing a pop formula that never fit him, and the political commentary lands clumsier than on other albums. Not without defenders, but the consensus here is pretty firmly 'disappointing'.
About Revival
An album blending political commentary with pop-leaning features from artists like Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé, generally considered his weakest mainstream-era release.
- Released
- 2017

The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)
A concept album about killing off the Slim Shady persona, which is a genuinely interesting idea stretched thinner than it needed to be. Some tracks land as real reflection on the character's legacy, others feel like he's performing self-awareness rather than actually delivering it. Reception has been mixed, split pretty evenly between people calling it a return to form and people calling it more of the same.
About The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)
A concept album centered on retiring the Slim Shady persona, released as a reflection on the character's legacy across his career.
- Released
- 2024
FF Tier: The low point

Infinite
Technically his debut, and it barely sounds like the same artist, this is pre-Slim Shady Eminem rapping in a much more conventional, Nas-and-AZ-influenced style. Interesting as a historical artifact, rough as an actual listen. He's said himself he was still finding his voice here, and it shows on every track.
About Infinite
Eminem's debut studio album, Infinite, was released independently on November 12, 1996, before he adopted the Slim Shady persona. It had a limited release and is known for its more conventional, boom-bap influenced style.
- Released
- 1996
- Status
- Independent debut
How we ranked them
We weighed critical reception at release, how the albums hold up now, cultural impact, and where fans and critics land in long-running debates (Reddit threads, Genius comments, retrospective reviews). Technical skill matters, but so does whether the album actually holds together as a listen rather than a pile of singles. Nostalgia counts for something. Padding and filler count against.
