Taylor Swift Albums Tier List: Every Era Ranked

Twelve studio albums, one of the most dissected discographies in pop music. We went through fan forums, critic reviews and years of Twitter (sorry, X) discourse to see where the consensus actually lands, then made the calls where Swifties can't agree.

This covers every studio album from the 2006 debut through the newest release. Some rankings here will feel obvious. Others, especially the gap between the "serious album" era and the earlier country years, will get people typing angry replies. That's fine. Scroll down and tell us where we got it wrong.

SS Tier: The untouchables

Folklore

Folklore

The pandemic album that shouldn't have worked as well as it did. Trading pop hooks for Aaron Dessner's folk production and third-person storytelling was a massive risk, and 'Cardigan' to 'Exile' to 'My Tears Ricochet' is as strong a three-song run as she's ever put together.

About Folklore

A surprise 2020 release made during the pandemic, shifting to indie folk production with Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff. It won Album of the Year at the Grammys.

Red

Red

The breakup album to end all breakup albums, and the one most often cited as her best pure songwriting showcase. 'All Too Well' (especially the 10-minute version) is the song most fans point to when they argue she's a great writer and not just a hitmaker.

About Red

A 2012 album widely seen as a turning point, blending country roots with pop experimentation. It features 'All Too Well', later re-recorded as a fan-favorite 10-minute version.

1989

1989

The full pivot to pop, and it's hard to argue with the results. 'Style', 'Blank Space' and 'Out of the Woods' turned her into a global pop act rather than a crossover country star, and the album barely has a weak track.

About 1989

Her full pop crossover album, released in 2014 and named after her birth year. It won Album of the Year at the Grammys.

AA Tier: Era-defining favorites

Fearless

Fearless

Still has some of her most beloved songs ever, 'Love Story' and 'You Belong With Me' alone made this album a cultural moment. A little dated in production now, but the songwriting bones are genuinely great.

About Fearless

Her second album, released in 2008, which pushed her into mainstream pop-country stardom. It won Album of the Year at the Grammys.

Speak Now
Cover: Wikipedia

Speak Now

Written entirely solo, which fans love to point out, and it shows in how personal and sometimes messy the lyrics get. 'Dear John' and 'Enchanted' are fan favorites, even if the back half drags a bit.

About Speak Now

Released in 2010, notable for being written entirely by Swift alone without co-writers. It's known for sprawling, confessional songwriting.

Evermore

Evermore

Folklore's sister album, released just months later, and almost as good. 'Willow' and 'Champagne Problems' hold up, though it inevitably lives a little in its predecessor's shadow.

About Evermore

Released later the same year as Folklore, described by Swift as its 'sister record'. It continues the folk-indie sound and narrative songwriting style.

BB Tier: Good, with real debates attached

Midnights
Cover: Wikipedia

Midnights

Huge commercially, 'Anti-Hero' became inescapable, but critics and longtime fans are split on whether the production (all that Jack Antonoff synth) is a feature or a crutch. Solid front to back, rarely transcendent.

About Midnights

A 2022 pop album framed around stories of 13 sleepless nights. It produced the hit single 'Anti-Hero'.

2022
Reputation
Cover: Wikipedia

Reputation

The snake era. Divisive when it came out, but it's aged better than people expected, 'Delicate' and 'Getaway Car' are genuinely great. The tabloid-feud framing around it still turns some listeners off.

About Reputation

Released in 2017, a darker, synth-heavy album that followed a period of intense media scrutiny. It leaned into a 'villain' public persona.

Released
2017
Lover
Cover: Wikipedia

Lover

Bright, a little scattered, and clearly a transition album between the Reputation persona and the Folklore pivot. 'Cruel Summer' became a monster hit years later, but the album as a whole feels like a mixed bag of eras.

About Lover

A 2019 album marking a brighter, more romantic turn after Reputation. It was her first release under a new label deal.

Taylor Swift
Cover: Wikipedia

Taylor Swift

The 2006 debut, and it's charming in a nostalgic way if you were there for it. 'Tim McGraw' and 'Our Song' are sweet, but this is clearly a teenager finding her voice rather than a fully realized album.

About Taylor Swift

Her self-titled debut studio album, released in 2006 as a country record. It introduced her as a teenage singer-songwriter writing about high school and young love.

The Tortured Poets Department
Cover: Wikipedia

The Tortured Poets Department

Bloated is the word that comes up most, especially after the surprise double-album drop. There are strong songs buried in here, but fans broadly agree it needed an editor, 31 tracks is a lot to sift through for the highlights.

About The Tortured Poets Department

Released in 2024 as a surprise double album with a large tracklist. It explores heartbreak and fame with dense, lyric-heavy songwriting.

The Life of a Showgirl
Cover: Wikipedia

The Life of a Showgirl

The newest release, and reaction has been mixed so far. Too early to know how it settles long-term, but early consensus puts it well below her best work rather than among it.

About The Life of a Showgirl

An expanded edition of her 2025 studio album. Details and critical reception are still settling as of writing.

How we ranked them

We weighed critical reception, cultural impact and how the album holds up on replay, but mostly we tracked what fans and critics actually say when they argue about this online. Chart numbers matter less here than songwriting quality, consistency track to track, and whether an album defined its era or just filled space between singles. Where the fandom is genuinely split, we picked a side and said so.
