MW4's Most Argued Ranking Spot, Debated

Every time a new Call of Duty drops, the fights start before the servers even stabilize. This year it's Modern Warfare 4, and the one placement that's getting the most heat in our new ranking, Call of Duty MW4 vs Every Other COD, Ranked, is exactly where it sits relative to the Black Ops games and original Modern Warfare trilogy. Not whether it's good. Whether it's good enough to sit above franchise peaks that people have been defending for over a decade.

Here's the case for ranking it as high as we did. MW4 plays faster and tighter than most recent entries. The gunplay feels responsive in a way that a lot of the post-2019 reboots didn't quite nail, and the campaign has moments that actually land instead of just checking boxes. When a game ships this close to launch and still earns a spot ahead of titles with years of nostalgia behind them, that's not us being reactionary. That's the gameplay talking.

Now here's the doubt, because we're not going to pretend it isn't there. Call of Duty history is littered with games that looked incredible in month one and aged into "fine, I guess" by year two. The original Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops 2 earned their spots over years of multiplayer loyalty, map rotations people still talk about, and moments that became franchise shorthand (you know the ones). MW4 hasn't had time to prove it has that staying power. Ranking it above those games right now is a bet on trajectory, not a settled verdict on legacy.

Why this fight matters

This isn't just nerd trivia. Where MW4 lands says something about what the franchise values right now, speed and polish versus slow-burn community attachment. Warzone complicates it even more, since battle royale has pulled a huge chunk of the playerbase's attention away from traditional multiplayer, and any ranking has to account for a game that people play completely differently depending on which mode they load into.

  • MW4's gunplay and movement are the strongest argument for its placement
  • Its campaign has standout missions but hasn't been tested by time the way older entries have
  • Warzone's shadow makes "best multiplayer" a moving target depending on which mode you mean
  • Legacy picks like MW2 (2009) and Black Ops 2 benefit from years of community goodwill that MW4 simply hasn't had a chance to earn yet

We also think the argument says something about how people rank games in general. Recency bias is real, but so is the opposite problem, where older entries get protected by nostalgia instead of judged on their actual merits today. Both forces are pulling on this specific placement, which is exactly why it's the one fans keep arguing about.

If you're into shooters generally, not just COD, our Battle Royale Games Tier List covers the wider genre MW4 and Warzone are competing in, and it's worth a look if you want the bigger picture of where the whole battle royale space stands right now.

So where does that leave MW4?

Honestly, right where we put it, with an asterisk. High enough to reflect how good it feels to actually play right now. Not so high that we're pretending it's already earned the kind of cultural weight that older entries carry. Give it a year of post-launch support, map additions, and whatever Warzone integration looks like, and this placement could look obviously correct or embarrassingly early. That's the nature of ranking something this fresh.

What we won't do is pretend the debate isn't real just to avoid controversy. The whole point of a tier list is to make a call and defend it, not to hedge every entry into a tie. MW4 sits where it sits because of what it does well right now, and we're fine with people disagreeing loudly in the comments. That's kind of the job.

If shooters aren't your thing, we rank a lot of other stuff with the same approach, picking a spot and defending it. Check out our Greatest F1 Drivers of All Time tier list or the UFC Fighters 2026 Tier List if you want to see the same debate play out in a completely different arena.
